Title: Riding home tonight - now only have two gears????
Post by: BribieDuc on August 28, 2008, 01:33:30 AM
Riding home from work tonight and about a km from home, couldn't change down into second or first.  Kept going and on stopping can now only select fourth or fifth.  The gearlever doesn't seen to return to a mid position, just drops down.  What's up...any ideas??
2002 620ie, I've put about 80k on her, runs daily 150km...no indications of impending doom at all.    ???

Probably a broken spring on the shift mechanism.
You'll need to pull the left engine sidecover to find out for sure.

Is the shift lever and rod on the left side operating freely, maybe someone tipped your bike over and bent it?

Yep,  broken gear lever return spring.  Small part but need to to open the cases and is tricky to replace.

sometimes you can tap the shit up so that it "rests", therefore being able to up or down from that gear.  I didnt break a spring but once, I added on one of those neoprene "shoe savers" and the shift lever was rubbing on the shift rod.

I later took it off but on the initial ride, I could not figure out why I only had a couple gears.  Manually (in this case with your foot) positioning the lever reset it so that I could shift through out the 1-6 gears.

Try that in your neighborhood.  You may temporarily be able to ride it until you get parts in(though I dont recomend it).  Also, make sure nothing is rubbing.
