Hey everyone,
I was gazing at my 695 today, and I got to thinking about the little black thing behind the right side cover. It's plastic and covered by a little metal shield. I guess this is some kind of emissions canister, right? (It's #9 in the picture)
Then I realized it wasn't connected to anything except one hose that went from the bottom of the canister towards the front of the bike, but there's nothing at the other end of it.
Is it really doing anything down there? Would it be safe to just take it out?
Also, I looked under the tank and there are two outlets with nothing connected to them. They are where hoses #12 and #25 would go in the picture. Is that a problem? Do you think I should just run a hose from those outlets to under the bike somewhere, or does anything ever come out of them to begin with?
Thanks!
yes, get rid of it.
check in the FAQ or How To section for a couple good step by steps for removing the little ugly bit.
most important thing is not to forget the M10 bolts!
good luck
Aha, I found the thread you mentioned.

I had my footpeg bracket off today anyway to replace the rear brake lever, so I went ahead and yanked the canister out. The only hose connected to it came from the under side, so it would be #5 in the picture. There was nothing else attached!
I need to see where the hoses would have gone into the throttle bodies and see if those holes are plugged now! What would happen if they weren't plugged?
Look at the diagram you posted. Find 18, 19, 20 and 21. Now go out and look at your bike. Locate the throttle bodies. You will see these pieces or 20 with a cap on it or a hose connecting to the other side or a 5 mm screw.
If the nipples are not capped or replaced with screws you have a vacuum leak.
plugging the intake side (either by capping the nipples, or using screws) is a very good thing to do.
aside from that? throw that emissions can away.
far, far away.

this is where the M10 bolt comes in handy. remove the nipple screws (save for other activities...)
put some RV silicone on them and thread them in. done

Hey do any of you guys happen to have a picture of where the lines would go into the throttle bodies? (where you would plug the hole)
I couldn't find any open holes, but there were no lines going that way to begin with, so I wasn't sure exactly where to look!
I did get some washers to use as spacers though, so I got the aluminum bracket out of the way. Looks good!!!

there is one on each throttle body [thumbsup]
Thanks for the pic! I'll take another close look at it in the morning.
following the two lines from your can should lead you to the intakes.
IIRC, horz is on the RH side of the bike, vert is on the LH side, and it's a squeezey fit through the frame
Is the procedure similar on an S4R (2000 +) model?
The diagram for my bike is a bit diff:

From the looks of it:
5 and 9 go in the trash
12 get plugged?
Plug the throttle bodies on each side??
I think this has already been taken off my bike but I'm not sure, I can't find it and I can't find a diagram for where it would be located in my manual, it's a 2002 monster 750. Is it located in a different position?
Also, maybe I missed it but did anyone explain why it's a good idea to take this off? I'm all for it, I just want to know what it does exactly ;D

Herm's diagram will work for your bike, so will arai_speed's, except for the location of the canister
In theory, fuel vapor from your fuel tank is absorbed by the charcoal in the canister and stored there until the engine is running, then the fuel vapor is drawn into the engine and burned. Sounds good. Unfortunately, since one side is opened to the atmosphere, some does escape. To make things worse, there are two other problems with the system. If the tank is filled too much or filled then parked in the hot sun and the charcoal is saturated and when the bike is started, assuming it starts, it will run very rich for a while, possibly causing more pollution it originally prevented. The other problem is when they get old they can clog and cause tank venting issues. Of course, there is the visual pollution issue too.
Crap is it an M10 bolt or an M5 bolt for the throttle bodies? I have a 696

nope,.... you want that to be open so the fumes caused by evaporation can escape.
just run it down the same place that # 22 is
not positive on the 696, but its M10 on the other models

Aha, I found where they're supposed to be. I was sort of confused because there were no lines there to begin with. It would be right before the intake meets the cylinder head itself, right?
Turns out they were already plugged with some little socket head cap screws.
Funny, it seems like someone already went to the trouble of plugging those holes and removing the lines, but they never got rid of the canister!
maybe they put it back on to sell it?
ok did the removal on the 696. definitely not M5 bolts. didn't bother to try the M10 just got covers for the valves.
need to still rerun the vent hose. have to find the Y with two different sizes since the vent and the overfill lines are different. although i didnt check inner diameter, so i may be wrong.
It's not M10. That would be way too big. The threads on the end of the rear view mirrors, where they screw into the bracket on the handlebar, is M10!
take the screw with the air inlet in it down to home depot and size it.
or, you can read the how to (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=2514.0) here...
i bought M5 .80 x 10 screws and they are not the same size as the plugs. for certain. on the 696
