So it's been about a month since I got my bike out of the shop after having a bent front wheel fixed and painted. It was in just 2 days short of 4 weeks. I go walking out to my garage today and after a cursory glance at the Duc ( I had ridden it a few hours earlier) I noticed something wrong with the rear tire. It has a 2 1/2 inch long deck screw through it. I say through it because it is through the tread at an angle and actually comes out of the sidewall. You can see the shape of the screw under the tread so I doubt it if it will go flat. I think it is between the belts and not into the interior of the tire.
I'm at work right now which means I get to stay up and take my bike to the dealership in the AM when it opems. They said they would do it while I wait. I'm happy that it's only 10 miles or so as I will have to baby it up there. I have no trailer or way to get it there otherwise. I will be very careful as 3/4 of it is county roads that I can put along on.
I swear there has been one thing after another with this bike. Scratched rear wheel, bent front wheel, stripped drain plug, stripped mesh filter screws and now a screw in the rear tire. It had over 3000 miles on it but I'd like to think it had some life left. It wasn't THAT close to the wear indicators.
I think I'll ask if the tech's and shop manager can give a little anti voodoo dance around it before I take it home.

Glad you saw the problem immediately. The thought of explosive decompression at high speed is scary.
There are a few houses being built in my street. This is a constant fear that I have. The sand and gravel on the street are bad enough.

better you caught it when you did,
then 50 miles down on the side of the road in the rain...;)
I had a buddy get a screw in the front and rear tire in the parking lot after getting new tires.

In the span of 2 months
ducati performance steering damper fails
I drop my bike in my garage bending my right rearset
My clutch fails at 4800 miles
and I picked up a broken piece of a screw driver in my rear tire limping the bike home, so add a trashed rear tire to the list
You should ask the dealer if you can buy a roadside hazard warranty. I did on my bike and now I get a new tire for free.
I'm notoriuos for running over screws and nails in bikes and cars. Just replaced a practically new rear tire on my 998. My car has a flat repair on one tire and a screw in another one that I just found the other day.
Well I took a closer look when I got home today. Not only do I need a new rear tire I need a newly painted swingarm. The deck screw stuck out far enough to scratch the hell out of the swingarm before snapping off. It was 400 bucks for an oil change and a brand new pilot power. I'm getting an estimate to paint the swingarm. I'm estimating 600 bucks or so to remove, shoot and replace. Sigh... at least they fixed everything else while I waited. They also removed my stripped drain plug for free.
I still think of the poor bastard who bought a MultiStrada 1100s from my local dealer, rode down the road 500 meters to a set of lights, turned right at the set of lights and promptly crashed the bike.

in between the dealer and the set of lights he ran over a very large screw, rear tyre deflated and the rear washed out.
Bike written off, just over 1 km on the odo.

Is it bad enough to where you can see the scratch w/ the wheel on?
The rim got bent at a big multi line RR crossing that was perfect except for the area that I was in. There was a huge hole that was hidden by the rail and the busted tie that was behind it. Bent front wheel.
The scratches are totally visible. I touched them up because I'm not losing the remaining warm weather with my bike in the shop. I didn't take any pic's but the shop did. I may just save the money for the fix and invest in mods. If I can even get it close I'll spend that money on something else.My only worry is if it could eventually corrode or otherwise hurt the swingarm.
My local shop had me in and out in about 2 hours with the tire, oil change and getting the stripped screw out and my custom one in. Good guys.
