Title: M696 Error - "light relay"
Post by: zLoki on September 05, 2008, 09:49:56 AM
Hey everyone,

My low beam just stopped working, check engine light stays on and the error message is 'light relay'.  Everything else works, including high beam.  Is it as simple as a blown bulb?  Any ideas?

could it be a fuse? Page 112 of the manual shows how to determine if a fuse is bad. and I think page 113 tells you the location of the fuse for the head light. if i am reading it right....

Checked the fuses, they are all ok.  Going into the dealer in the morning, let you all know whats up.

Would it be an idea to check for a relay for the light.
Also, if said relay exists, to check that said relay is not faulty/unplugged

Just thinking out aloud  [cheeky]

That would be a great thought but.......

I have wired thousands of relays over the years and I think I've seen maybe two that were actually bad. That being said, I was using good quality relays from companies like Bosch and Potter and Brumfield.

I guess if Ducati uses crappy relays anything is possible.

I have also learnt with motorcycle and automotive electrical, if the computer says to check something, then check that first and work back from there.

Relays overall are very reliable, but assuming something is not faulty just because it has a proven track record, it's never a safe bet, And the one time you assume it is not faulty, the bloody thing will be!!

Assumption = The mother of all make the beast with two backs ups.  [cheeky]

Being under warranty I would suggest getting the dealer to check it first, but checking wiring and electrical systems is a slow process and very time consuming.

Hey everyone,

Just got back from the dealer.  Everything is fixed.  I went in the day before and all the techs were doing some training so I had to come back.  Turns out there are some reports of relays on the 696 having some issues.  Nothing has been issued formally but certainly something to look out for.  I also had a blown fuse - but this happened AFTER the lights stopped working - I checked.  So about 30 min later, I got her back and went for a ride  [moto]
