Title: Plastic Clarification
Post by: cgos4r on September 05, 2008, 09:24:07 PM
Can someone help me out here? I've read about plastic gas tanks on Monsters. Which models, years, etc. have plastic tanks? I need to find out if I was bamboozled by the previous owner. I have a 2006 S4R and it clearly has a steel tank. Yes I took a magnet to it. Underneath, it feels like plastic, but it is steel. I'm just wondering if it was damaged and then replaced with a cheaper steel version if it is supposed to have a composite one.

I believe the plastic wraps around metal? It is heavier than a steel tank as well.

snip...

In 2005/2006 (in the US at least) all the tanks went to plastic. (But there's still a few Metals that were being depleted from stock, hence the 2 year span to actually completely change to plastic) simple check to confim, just check to see if a magnet sticks to it. These tanks have the same cutout underneath for battery and airbox. But have a different fuel filter/pump system that bolts into the bottom of the tank. They only have a gascap on the top of the tank and they use a different mechanism for the hinge.

...snip

Thanks, I searched and searched and could not find the information you posted. I suck with the search function!

Well, that doesn't really clear things up. My tank definitely is steel, pinched seam and all. Underneath, the QA sticker is still present. Looks like the bike was manufactured in 2005 as a 2006 model. It must have got one of the remaining steel tanks. Is there any way to confirm if my tank is the original one for the bike? Anyone else have a 2006 S4R with a steel tank?

If there isn't a problem with the tank, I wouldn't wory if it was original or not. You know it's a steel tank and that's all you really need to know for future reference...

Aren't the steel tanks slightly higher capacity?  No small perk....

Thanks for the replies. I'm just trying to verify the history of the bike, the tank looks like the original. It still has the factory stickers under it and etc.
