Title: Mild A* Rant
Post by: Randimus Maximus on September 06, 2008, 10:37:21 AM
So I have a pair of GP Plus gloves and the leather in the palms is disintegrating (for lack of a better description) after about a year.  The first pair that I had lasted like four or five years.

I take them to my retailer, who has send them back to A*, and when they receive them, I'll get a new pair.

Meanwhile, I've got no gloves to wear.  [bang] [bang]

Has this kind of situation happened to anyone else?

Don't you have more than one set of gloves?

I don't see the need to have two pairs of gloves.  After all, you can only wear one pair at a time.  makes almost as much sense as owning 3 bikes

Iono, I've got a cold weather pair and warm weather pair. If I had to I could wear either anytime if I didn't have anything else.

That aside, I've bought mostly A* gloves and I've had a consistent problem of wearing through the finger tips. Usually the left pointer first but sometimes the left middle first. I usually let it develop either a sizeable hole in one finger or moderate size holes in 2 fingers before I replace them.

If it gets too cold to ride here in Colorado, I do have another pair of gloves I can wear....

They look something like this:

And are used in conjunction with these:

Exactly my point! As is, "why don't you have another pair?". I still have my old pair if I need them for some reason along with my winter gloves.

He's trying to say your winter gloves are useless for protection...

If it's this thing you have about having more than 1 of something than I guess I can see  where you have a problem.

I sort of wish I had the same problem. Right now as I'm writing this I have 8 pairs of racing gloves.

I rotate them and that way I may never wear out a pair of gloves.

I wash each pair after each ride. Sweat is what makes them rot out. After I have run soapy water through a pair that I have just worn I run clean water through them and then hang them on the clothesline in the laundry room to naturally dry.

After they are dry, I treat them w/ Lexol spray -on leather conditioner and message it into the leather and then they are like new.

In the mean time I have 7 other pairs to choose from.  dolph

I have warm weather gloves, cold weather ones, and an extra pair for long trips. When it's raining, it's great to have a second pair to put on the next morning.

I only have one pair of gloves I wear regularly.

I have two other pairs: one is super lightweight, hardly protective at all; the other is a heavy winter-weight glove that is too big for me, even with glove liners, and hurts to ride with.

So I would be in a similar boat without my favorite pair.

my point originally is that A*'s return policy is stupid.

My second point with the ski gloves is that if it is too cold to ride with the GP Plus gloves, it is time to hit the slopes.

God, I truly hope you're kiddding.

I mean, this is some strange type of sarcasm, right?

If not, I can't figure out where you get the time to perform this multi-step example of glove love after each ride.

Either you have no life, or you ride for ten minutes, then spend 2 hours on glove maintenance.

Or maybe you don't ride very often?

You do have one good point, tho.

You'll never have to buy another pair of gloves. [roll]

Sorry, not kidding.  When I get done w/ a ride I have a ritual that I always go through.

It takes me 10 minutes to get my gear off , leather jacket and pants hung on the clothesline and a sponge w/ clean water to clean the bugs off them.

Then I get the bugs off my Helmet which takes all of 2 minutes w/ a wet wash cloth laid over the Helmet to loosen the bugs so that they will then wipe right off w/ a microfiber cloth.

Then the boots get wiped off w/ a wet sponge, wiped dry w/ a towel and set next to the Dehumidifier. Another 2 minutes.

Then it takes 5 minutes to wash and dry the excess water from the gloves and hang them on the clothesline.

Wash and clean ME and cool down in front of a fan and by now my bike is cooled down enough to wash and , dry it , and put it away.

My bike goes on the Battery Tender as clean as it is when I get it out to go for a ride each time.

Same way every time.

When my gloves are dry , I condition them while watching a DVD or listening to the Stereo so no time wasted.

I condition the Jacket and leather Pants each time after they have hung on the clothesline for 24 hours and the Dehumidifier has pulled all the wettness out of them.

Everything looks and smells like new when I'm ready to ride next time.

That's just how I've always taken care of my stuff. I just don't let it get dirty and stay that way .  Dolph

When I was researching to by some new gloves earlier this year, I found quite a few people that where complaining about A* quality (mostly stitching came loose after a year or so). So I decided to buy Held Phantoms in stead of the GP-Tech gloves I wanted to by first.

Okay, just a little update.

I dropped the A* gloves off more than a month ago to be sent in to A* so that they could replace them under warranty.

I then bought another pair of A* gloves so that I could ride.  I didn't really like them.

So I bought a pair of Dainese gloves, which I really like.

I returned the other pair of A* gloves.

I've still not receive my replacement pair of A* gloves.

I've decided that I will no longer do business with A* because of this situation.

Look for a brand new pair of A* GP Plus gloves for sale in the classifieds soon.  (soon being defined as when A* finally gets around to giving me the replacement pair).

No.  I don't see that it has anything to do with their poor policies that will cost them a customer.

Next time you buy gloves, get yourself some Helds and you'll never look back.  Their construction and protection is light years ahead of A* and the fit is amazing.

My replacement gloves came in yesterday...after I made a call to my retailer, who had to make another call to A*.  I didn't get all the details of the call between my retailer and A*, but it sounds like it wasn't pretty.

As mentioned earlier, I'm done with A*.

A brand new pair of A* GP Plus gloves (size XL) will be in the classified section soon.

I find it amusing that you'll complain about the gloves, and service, then try to sell them to the same people on the same forum.

The first set of those gloves lasted me 5 years.

I have a pair of Held Phantoms ,a pair of Held Akiras, a pair of Dainese Metal Racers , 2 pairs of Spidi Pentanes, a pair of A* GP  Pros, and 3 pairs of A* GP Techs and I like them all.

I will agree the Held Pantoms feel the most substantial and protective but not the most comfortable .   Dolph
