I've seen mention of the Sharpie bike here several times, but for those of you who haven't heard anything about it, here's the deal.
Roland Sands took a lightly modded white 696 and customized the "paintjob" with nothing but a $1.99 black Sharpie.
Here're some pics I took of it. The results were pretty damned cool IMO.

Any info on those rearsets?
Thanks!

I had a 73 vw bug I did the same thing to when I was 17 [laugh]
i have been planning on doing that on my bike when its done. Just black and silver sharpie on carbon fiber.
Probably got the idea from this car.....

if you ask me that looks stupid, but to each their own
same goes for a ruined lambo

Funny, that looks an awful like a vinyl wrap. :-\

Ya know, I think you're right.
It might still be hand drawn Sharpie on top of vinyl, but it does look like the car's been wrapped.
Look at the line around the logo here...

Dumb.
I'd rather see Sands trick out a 696...not just doodle on it with a Sharpie. [roll]

Heres what happened. Sands does the full on custom Hypermotard.... Ducati says "trick out a 696 for us" Roland goes out drinking, forgets all about the 696, and a week before the bike is to be shown, Ducati calls and say..." remember the 696 needs to be ready for Indy". Sands says to himself "what 696?...... oh, that white thing over there" Sands goes out drinking again, and wakes up the next morning, looks in the mirror and has an epiphany.

Saw this bike at Indy also, and that was my first question, anybody know about the rearsets, they were very nice.
It looks like he dumped the US bodywork and charcoal canister and replaced it with the Euro shrowd
So he gives a pen to a 10 year old kid......
[roll]
and his shit smells like roses.

I would take it a step further and say that it looks like crap.
Crap I tell ya!
That Lambo has clear vinyl over the sharpie so that it won't come off. They couldn't clear coat it because the paint would obviously ruin (clean the car), the Sharpie work.
I think it's cool.

Jeebus. You can't win around here. :-\ People get on your case if you do bolt-on mods, saying that there's no creativity and then someone does something like that and everyone rips it.
I think it's a great idea. It's a reminder that you can customize your bike for next to no $ and make it something individual and something your own. Do I care that it's Roland Sands? Nope. But he succeeded in mkaing an otherwise boring 696 a whole lot more interesting. [clap]
i think its cool, to do all that shite freehand impresses the hell outta me, i know if i tried to do something similar it'd look like balls. to me the rearsets look kinda like Satos...

I'm all for cheap mods, rattle can stuff, parts from other manufactures, etc. This is just simply dumb in my opinion. I'll ask it this way, would any of YOU do this to your bike if you had the "skills" this guy has?

Hell-it looks better than mine. I just throw dirt on mine and set it on fire.

Actually agree. Sands doesn't do a whole lot that I like..not that I like the 696 or this design either..but he's going in a totally differnet direction here and still getting ripped on.
Hmmm..the design kind of reminds me of the Jordan Suzuki bike from a few years back.
I like it, it's all tatt'd up.

I know that lambo... want to know that scary thing... that fool has his house (interior, little exterior) done up like that!
as for the bike... not something i would pay for... but i appreciate it. [thumbsup]
I can't imagine Roland Sands being a sharpie artist, but I bet some of you might like it if someone with some real talent did it... but they didn't. My bud is an incredible artist and he only uses sharpies... If they got someone who was really talented with a sharpie to do some artwork... now that is something I would like to see. Ducati really likes Sands apparently...

Yup.
I would have been one of the detractors saying how stupid this was if I hadn't seen it in person. It does look pretty cool. I'd never do it to my bike, but it took a lot of effort and artistry to pull it off.
i liked it too [thumbsup]
it was well done, and not a scribble job. i give it an A+ ;D

+1 what a joke. Looks like something a 2 year old did [laugh]
Did anybody notice that the drawing on the side of the tank is the Ducati factory being bombed during WWII?
Not until you mentioned it -- good eye! Now the dates (and the dropping bombs) make a lot more sense to me. It's basically a graphic history of the Ducati company from it's beginnings as a maker of radio tubes and other radio components in 1926, and hence a frequent target for allied bombing raids during WWII. Beginnings of the company on the front fender, culmination with the MotoGP championship on the seat cowl. Wonder what's on the other side of the tank...
I think its great....but that's just my opinion.

It appears to be clear coated over. I think it looks great!
My only problems with it......
Those parts are replaceable, and Sands has a boatload of talent. To see him alter simple replacement parts with a sharpie is like finding out Andy Partridge is writing ad jingles for Jello.
The rearsets look like Ducati Performance. They look just like mine on my S4RS. He could've modded them to make them work or maybe they are available somewhere.

I wonder... there was a mention up this thread about solvents in the clearcoat removing the ink. But this has got me thinking about the various tattoo artists & cartoonists I know, and wondering about starting with something small & subtle on one of my bikes, and I'd want it to last a more than a month or two.
And yes, like human tattoos, I know where this first "small & subtle" can lead...

Yup, i gotta go with SikDuc on this one. I rode with Reddymon on sunday, his look like these and he said they were DP units. Woever makes those for them...
