Post by: triangleforge on September 15, 2008, 02:09:25 PM
Just spotted this photo on the ST owners listserve; makes my heart hurt:

Act of "god".  Looks like the wind may have picked up the rain cover on the first one and then dominos!!   :-[

or the one rear tire & righthand exhaust poking out from underneath the Hyper on the far left, for that matter. Since we can only see one pipe, let's just pray it was a Kawasaki that got parked in the wrong lot, hmmm?

Chill dude, thats not true, he was just messing with ya.

Amy and I heard about it, and walked over right after the GP race was red flagged early due to the weather, and unfortunately the man I was talking to as we were walking up just happened to own the 1098 tricolore you see down in the pics.

It was a pretty bad scene, but while the rain cover may have been part of the issue, the truth was the attendants had everyone line their bikes up facing the wrong direction.

If they would have turned the bikes around, they would have been much more stable, as that parking lot had a slant to it, and the bikes were pretty vertical.

So it didn't take much of a gust of wind to do the trick.

I was just getting ready to post up the pics I took of this.

Jobu's bike and my bike are in that picture that was already posted.

Two rows back from the carnage, the Monster with the red frame is Jobu's and the Hyper next to it is mine.

Yep.

And if you look just to the left of that one, there's another one that's almost identical.

Those two were together, and there was a third one, also with CF bodywork that wasn't with those two.

Ouch, the Tricolore is going to need a new fairing stay and fairing.
Title: Re: Ducati Dominos at Indy
Post by: redneckduc on September 15, 2008, 07:45:27 PM
It was a white S4RS that started the dominoes.  The owner picked it up and pushed it away from the rest.  Before the owners got to the bikes a couple of guys stood them back up.  Then when the wind picked back up, they went over a second time.  The Tricolor had the fairing almost completely completely wiped out.  I hope the dude didn't have to ride it home.  I think he had NY tags.
I felt bad for everyone who had their bikes damaged.  They were just too close together and parked with their stands on the uphill side.  Makes me nervous even on a calm day.
That old guy with the Tricolor wasn't afraid to ride it hard either.  That rear tire had the rubber on the corners balled up pretty good.

the parking was regulated by IMS (how do i know ? i got to park some that day) they told the staff to park West to East instead of facing north (uphill)
they wanted the bikes as close together and only like 6ft inbetween the rows they espected more bikes but what you see in the pic thats pretty mutch all the bikes that showed up Sunday.
i was parked 2 rows back and got to my bike after it had happend, they bikes were already up (about made my cry)

There hasn't been a spotting of a 1098cc Monster yet.

edit: now that I think about it, Ducati doesn't even make a 1098cc engine... the 1098 is 1099cc.

There's probably a 1% error in there. So, a 1098 is possible.

Man, that really sucks.

The winds were a lot stronger than I've seen in Indiana (aside from tornados). I was on the top row of stand B taking some pics when the winds shifted and a huge gust came in from the west. I thought I was going to get blown down onto the front straight. The on the way out of Indy, I saw somebody's tent in the creek on the north side of the track and several trees down along Georgetown road. The the gusts were blowing people all over I-70 West afterwards. It was really bad. Hopefully next year will be better.

Just catching up on this Thread

That sucks big time.

At Laguna Seca many of the bikes have to park on what we call the Dirt Hill.

I am sure this is a common occurence there. They hand out Pucks to put under your kickstand but thats one gopher infested hill.
If you sit and just watch you will see many bikes get dropped though out the day trying to go up and down the gravel Dirt hill.

I saw a few just waiting for my friends bike to warm up  :-\

Dirt is a bit softer than asphalt though  :-\

Yeah, I couldn't really tell.  I don't know enough about the different engines.  I do know that it looks farkin badass tho and that it must've been a real PITA to stick a 996 in a 696 frame.  I know tons of people here hate the 696 look, but I dig it and if they had an 1100 version of it, I might buy it (but I'd probably still choose a HM instead).
