Just started watching "Long Way 'Round" and just finished episode 1.
KTM didn't want to put their bikes to the test, eh? Did they really think it'd be a bad investment having half a dozen episodes of Ewan McGregor riding their bikes?
I don't even want to think about how many bikes BMW sold because of this series.

I thought that was a silly decision as well but perhaps they didnt think their bikes could make it ???
As you watch the series more you wont believe what those bikes made it through.
I just watched all the episodes a couple weeks ago! What a great show!

they didn't think that ewan and charlie would survive/complete the trip.

Just think how much better that would have made the show!!! It's a win/win.
Actually, KTM thought they would fail at their original plan, which was to ride w/o a support caravan. IMO the trip would have been alot easier for the two if they used the KTM ADV bikes. Too bad that was not the case!
I hope they decide to use the new GS800 for their next adventure.

i'm re-watching that episode now, and they always planned to have a support caravan. david mentions it about ~7 minutes into the first episode. this is in the planning stages and before their visit from ktm.
ewan's comment after speaking w/ ktm was simply "they think we're going to fail."

Yup... they were already taking precautions, to the point where they were trying to find a doctor to accompany them on the trip... I'd blame editing trickery, but it was clearly stated that this was four weeks out, well past the point where they realized they needed support staff.
Either way, bone headed move on the part of KTM. For the cost of two bikes they missed out on boatloads of promotion.

fixed it for ya. you forgot about claudio.
KTM made the right decision, their bikes wouldn't have made it IMO. We would've been watching a different show if they'd taken the KTMs.
I got to go to a London motorcycle show where they had both Ewan and Charlie's GS bikes, they didn't even wash the mud off. You could see where they repaired the frame with the wrench. It was awesome. Also picked up a kick ass Shoei helmet for way cheap. Shame it was wrecked in a crash less than 6 months later haha.
I used to see Ewan riding around London, lived in the same area. He used to ride a burgundy colored Suzuki bandit as his city bike, even met him a couple times. They're doing a new one called Long Way Down incase anyone is interested, google it, they have a website.

As stated, Long Way Down has been out for a little while now. It was alright, but it felt like it was almost too well planned. To me it felt like the first one was more of an adventure with more unknown. Good for those guys to add the charity work into their trip.
There IS a new show/trip in the works...Long Way Up. They're riding from the southern tip of South America up to California. Once again, UNICEF will be a part of the trip.

That's great! My wife and I watched Long Way 'Round a month ago, and we're currently watching Long Way Down. I said to her last night that they need to ride from the Artic Circle to the tip of S. America for the next one. ;D
These shows are great...although 'Round does seem a little better than Down at this point (3 episodes into Down).
I watched long way round for the second time with my brother last week. Still searching for long way down around here. :-[
You can find both (around, down) movies here for free

Make sure you get the US DVD format.
I guess I must've hit a time rift or something on the way over here from the UK almost 3 years ago. Since then time has seemed to kind of stop for me haha.
I'll have to go watch Long Way Down now.
Watching the DVD's made me wonder how much more work it was for Claudio to set up shot and catch up. Well.....He was getting paid to live a dream! [beer]
SPOILER ALERT
I loved how how CLaudio's "Red Beast" was making Ewan mad!
