This may sound airhead-ish ... but WTF ...
Just changed the oil & filter for the second time this season. I notice I over filled the first time; this time around I was verry carefull not to overfill. The owners manual and service manual says 3.3 litres with a filter change; but I didn't get in near that volume and I overfilled. This time I used 2.3 litres and it was full; this is odd; I can't believe theres a litre of residual oil in the system (oil cooler??) OR Ducati would have such a typo. 03 M 800 ie (has an oil cooler). [popcorn]
So 2 Q's 1. How much oil do you put in to your bike on a filter and oil change? and 2. Is it less that what the capacity specifies in the service manual?

Pull drain plug, drain, let it drain for about an hour while i go do something else ( usually get lunch and drink beer ) the shit litterally has a small pee stream going.
Last time I did that, I had a 4 liter of Repsol and i managed to fill up exactly 3 liters ( still got 1 liter left as left over stuff)
If you used 2.3Liters, i would probably say that there is 1/4 liter on the bottom of your engine that is slow driping out, you just didnt give it enough time. another 1/2 liter sticking all over inside your engine, in every little crevice and the last 1/4 is probably sitting in your oil cooler. Not a big deal. Just let it drain a bit more if your worried about it. not a big deal though.
The only way you will get 3.3 liters of oil in the engine is overhaul it. Some oil remains in the cooler and other nooks and crannies. On the other hand, you should have been able to get more than 2.3 in. My guess is you probably drained the oil on the side or rear stand and didn't get a full drain. I move my bike side to side to get as much out as possible and get close to 3 liters in, a little different every time.
+1 to what those other guys said. pull drain plug, screen, and old filter off, and go do something else for a bit. You will def. get about 3 liters (or as the manual says, litres) in there. Once I see it "full" I start it and let it run for 1-2 min, this creates more room as the new oil circulates. I then add the rest, it usually takes right around 3 liters/litres.
Each time I have done oil, it has taken 2 full liters and the 3rd bottle has 200ml left in it, so if there was a poll choice of 2.8, I would have clicked that.

yesss.... poll only allowed 4 choices at the time, go figure .... so I arbitrally picked some numbers; edited at your constructive suggestions .... ;D
Glad to hear that you all are getting less oil in and out as I am. I pulled the plug while the bike was hot, let it sit on a rear stand (tire touched the ground on rear stand) for .5 hour (yes I should have got her off the rear stand and rocked her, good suggestion) and let her run for 2 minutes after filling and topped up; so i may have used 2.5 L ...
bump; guess this post isn't as intresting / informative as I thought it would be ....
