Title: What is expected S4RS chain life?
Post by: dbran1949 on September 21, 2008, 04:48:46 PM
I'll be bringing my S4RS in for the 12K mile service. I am thinking about having them replace the chain. It looks ok but if it is near end of life I'll change it early to avoid another trip to the dealership.

If expected chain life is 15K miles then I'll just change it now

After re-reading the post I realized it was poorly worded. It's been edited

I've never managed to get 12k out of a chain. Depends on how hard you ride, how often you clean it, etc etc etc.

Typically, one should be due around now.

You will also want to change the sprockets at the same time. Doing them during the service is a good plan.

Changing gearing is best done at the time of a sprocket change, fyi.

Thanks
Since I commute (as well as twisties on the weekend). The lane splitting has got me on and off the throttle a lot. I already have a 14 tooth front, which I'll probably stick with. Thanks for the feedback, When I call for the appointment, I'll tell them so they be sure to have the parts.

I know the corrosion on the chain faces doesn't necessarily mean the chain internals are bad, but it looks like crap. Do they make chians that are anodized or have some other coating to minimize the rust belt look?

I've never had a chain corrode-have you been cleaning it regularly?

Yes,
It's not heavy rust or anything, just little spots of rust on the faces of the links. About the size of a felt tip pen point

I've changed one at 12,000 because I wanted to go to a 520 quick change setup and there was still life left in the old chain. I'm the worst at chain maintenance - never clean but do lube with wax frequently. Something north of 15,000 is what my guess is for replacement territory.

If you change the rear sprocket, you will find a new Ducati item will cost more than a Quick change carrier w/sprocket. The 520 setup is something like 2 lbs. lighter maybe? And you can really change gearing, like they said, quickly after installing one.

If you put a lot of miles on your bike a replacement steel sprocket is will last a lot longer than the lighter Al. sprocket.

I whole-heartedly agree. When I needed new sprockets for my 748, I was able to find a terrific deal on a used Sprocket Specialists sprocket carrier and picked up a set of AFAM sprockets and a DID chain for what the dealer wanted just for the OEM rear sprocket. I also run nothing but steel rear sprockets for their longevity.

I've only run one 520 set up and that was the OEM on my 748. I was very disappointed with the wear on it and it was basically shot at 11k miles. I changed everything at 12k and went up to a 525 setup to get more mileage. I'm not on the track and racing and at over 250 pounds with full gear, the 520 weight savings won't mean squat to me.

With 525 and 530 chains, I tend to get 18k-24k from a decent o-ring or x-ring. I've noticed that quite often my chains are worn more than I care to run them before the sprockets are worn enought to justify changing them, also, so I usually get two chains to a set of sprockets. Usually the second chain lasts 16k-20k. With deals on DID and EK o-ring and x-ring chains between $65 and $90, I feel that I get my money's worth compared to changing everything when the chain is shot to the tune of spending the money on the chain and $30-$40 on front sprocket and $40-$70 on a steeel rear sprocket......but many people do not feel comfortable doing the two chains to one set of sprockets.

All
Thanks for the info. I'll stay away from OEM for sure. From what I have been reading X ring sounds good

replaced my OEM with a" DID gold and black X ring" looks awasome; 30 800 dark ... after 20 k miles...

... but was very cool was the old chain was done (although Ducati dealership mechanic said it looked fine ...:); and this new chain made a noticable difference in performance.  The old chain was worn out and stretched, so there was some chain lash and general clunckyness that i thought was from the tranny.  Replaced it an all was notice-ably smoother!   ....Ducati dealership mechanic!?!

OEM is a DID chain - about as good as you can get.

Check with Chris a Ca-cycle, he has good prices on Afam quick change with DID gold chains. Of course, others do too.

14/43 is a good ratio too.
