I guess I can kinda see that.

I don't think those are headlights on the Aprilia though.  I think that's track bodywork.

you're correct. look at the first pic in the thread for the headlight configuration.

also, the rest of the bike, especially the lower and tailsection, look nothing like the d16rr.

The most interesting part to me comes from comparing the superbike and the streetbike (which is the same thing you could say of any bike).  You really get a sense of how different they are when you compare the components and manufacturing side by side.  Neat.   [thumbsup]

I knew that those were not lights, just the overall 'shark like' appearance of the front end.  I think they both (the rr16 and rsv4) look good and agree the rest of the bike doesn't look at all  like each other.

What I find amazing is the thought process for the bike.

Tiny tail like a GP bike for quick transitions, frame slider integrated into the bodywork on the Factory version, adjustable motor mounts(is that a first), adjustable steering head and swingarm pivot(not unlike the 916, 99x), fly by wire, massive gull swingarm, massive power,..

She is going to be amazing.   And Biaggi will be contending on her in WSBK.

Xaus is on the new BMW.

...but when I look back at a 1098S, the Duc had me at "Hello."

Haven't they sold enough Desmosedicis to meet the homologation requirements?

Why not run those in WSBK and AMA?

I don't think they sold enough in the U.S and E.U. to satisfy homologation rules. Didn't the U.S only get like 100 of the 300 they'd need to race in AMA? Two years ago at VIR when I talked to the marketing guy, he made it sound like it'd be impossible to assemble the requisite yearly amount since the engines were largely hand assembled by the race team.

Oh, you have to sell a certain number per year?

They ended up making 1500 of them though.

Beats me. I just suggested they say screw the AMA and run a street legal MotoGP bike and that was the explanation I got.

You think the next generation SBKs will have the V4 (3-5 years)? I guess it boils down to how highly tuned the current generation 1000cc I-4s are...because the 1098R seems to be close to it's limit (from my rather uneducated perspective). If they still have a lot of room to get more hp out of the 1000s, then it would seem the twins days are numbered.  ??? I suppose at some point you'd hit a ceiling with the I-4s at 1000cc though...think they're close?
Title: Re: Aprilia RSV4 launched
Post by: superjohn on September 22, 2008, 03:55:19 PM
I think the 1098/1198 can still make a lot more power and be competitive with a litre I-4. The 999 was still competing, it just needed to be rebuilt after every rave and run custom gearing that the I4's weren't allowed. I suppose it all depends on whether Ducati changes their philosophy. They've always contended that a V-twim was the best engine for street use, and therefore staunchly advocated the rules disposition that would allow for twins to be able to race competitively against the other makes. If they change their mind and decide a V-4 (big bang or otherwise) is as good for a street bike, or that a superbike is a race bike first and a street bike second, then I suppose they could always switch.

It's hard to say with Ducati I never thought they'd make a motard  [laugh]

What I'm interested in is how much they can market the street version for. And yes, the street version's exhaust is hideous. Put a headlight in the racer for me! -  thank you.

And Ducati could go to a 4 banger when they want or need to.  At 1200 cc they don't have excess power on there side. Other than the power that is Bayliss.

I wonder how "cheaply" Ducati could get with a production of a four if they had to.  I mean the research and development has been done. Hasn't it?

Notice "cheap" is in quotes.

LA, its coming.

The Desmosedicci for the street that takes the place of our v-twin SBK's will exist at some point in the near future, and most likely with even more power than current models (although, without all the fancy bits and pieces on the current model).

Think about the costs, and business models of manufacturing;

Ducati was very smart, and had sponsors pay for 97% of their racing budget, which included R&D from the beginning.

They then created a street version, and sold it at a high premium (clear price discrimination aimed at gaining the most revenue from a small market of ultra wealthy first movers).

Next step is to dramatically cut the cost, dramatically increase volume.

Its just a matter of time.

he meant for the SBK a V4 16 valve instead of the V2 8 valve.

high volume production should keep prices below 25k but i can't see the 848 getting a v4

maybe a 1200 v4 and a 900 v2 for the sbk

Remember too, the latest Cycle World reported Ducati is developing a new 2 cylinder motor with the front head rotated up for packaging, and maybe not even a 90deg cylinder angle.  They said the current 1200cc 2 cylinder design is at its limit.

I think Bellissimoto is right. Ducati didn't make money on the D16, but they sure got there money's worth. The bikes are everywhere and owned by the "beautiful/rich" - some of the best advertising you can get. And smart of Ducati to get others to pony up for capital to do the R&D all the way from the 990 to the road bike.  I bet I still can't afford one when and if they do manufacture a reduced price variant.

A big bang "detuned", 1200cc,  90 degree v4 stump puller. Wow! Like to get a ride on one of those. [thumbsup]

I like it - it looks better then the old bike. It does have a CBR'ish look to it on the front end.  From the early spy shots that I have seen the thing looks tiny:

Unless the guy riding it is an oger  ;D

I think Bellissimoto is right. Ducati didn't make money on the D16, but they sure got there money's worth. The bikes are everywhere and owned by the "beautiful/rich" - some of the best advertising you can get. And smart of Ducati to get others to pony up for capital to do the R&D all the way from the 990 to the road bike.  I bet I still can't afford one when and if they do manufacture a reduced price variant.

A big bang "detuned", 1200cc,  90 degree v4 stump puller. Wow! Like to get a ride on one of those. [thumbsup]

If it happened it'd likely only be a 1000cc V4 as there's still the restriction for 4 cylinder machines. Only twins get to go to 1200cc

Haven't they sold enough Desmosedicis to meet the homologation requirements?

Why not run those in WSBK and AMA?
I don't think AMA has sorted out whether they will or won't have a Litre bike class for '09 and if they haven't got it sorted by now there probably won't be a 1000cc class in AMA for '09.

This comes about because of rule changes as a result of the sale of AMA racing to DMG and the " Factories " and " Privateers ."  Dolph

he meant for the SBK a V4 16 valve instead of the V2 8 valve.

high volume production should keep prices below 25k but i can't see the 848 getting a v4

maybe a 1200 v4 and a 900 v2 for the sbk
I think the 2v is history in the next year or 2,  EPA !   Dolph

I don`t give a damn who said what, I want one [thumbsup]
Better hope Biaggi does well w/ the bike or the sales volume won't justify production.   Dolph

Reports I have read have remarked on it's relatively small size

This weeks MCN quotes Aprila as saying a V4 Tuono is in the early stages of design, expected for 2010.

The price of the Factory is expected to be about 75% of the current cost of a 1098R.

Word!  It's a really nice looking machine, and I am sure it will scoot like a startled cheetah, but $30K?  Not so sure about that...
