Title: Attaching VDSTS, be careful...
Post by: billg69gmc on September 22, 2008, 06:19:50 PM
Just wanted to share this tidbit. I was making an electrical connector to run power to the VDSTS, and managed to  cross connect the power connector to the VDSTS cable.

If this happens you may fry the ground circuit for the ECU.
Symptoms:
1)Throwing a code that contains ground fault, my ST3 threw a Thermostat Sensor failure ground.
2) Fan immediately comes on (S4R?)
3) My fault code: P0115 Coolant temperature sensor ------0001: OC/SC GND
4) Temperature Gauge displayed all dashes,  - - -
5) Engine ran rough

Diagnosis:
1) Replacing the Thermostat ($100) does not fix the problem
2) Using the VDSTS where it is attached properly, clears the fault immediately
3) Removal of the VDSTS (after turning bike off) then key on, bike throws fault immediately

I had the  fortune or misfortune to have a "spare" DP ECU, which I swapped and bike booted clean.

Cure:
1) Attach a ground lead to the "proper" wire on the diagnostics plug on the bike.
2) Install a spare ECU you just happen to have just sitting on a shelf.

So while I was 100% careful with the alligator clamps, my Achilles  Heel was making a silly cable up to streamline using the VDSTS.

I hope this helps someone out or at least prevents this from happening to anyone.

I am not alone in experiencing this, on TOB, a few ST owners had done the same and apart from supplying a ground through the Diagnostic plug, the ECU loses ground and the bike will not run correctly.

For those doing forum search I will enter a few words here: technoresearch fault ground VDSTS
