Title: Marin ride report--9/27
Post by: Spidey on September 27, 2008, 11:18:02 PM
We did a short, but really fun loop through Marin today.  Perfect weather and great short ride comprised pretty much entirely of twisties.  Woot!   Route Map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=shoreline+highway+and+almonte,+Mill+Valley,+CA&daddr=panoramic+highway,+mill+valley,+ca+to:stinson+beach,+ca+to:point+reyes+station,+ca+to:point+reyes+petaluma+road,+point+reyes,+ca+to:Platform+Bridge+Rd,+Marin,+California+94946,+United+States+to:fairfax,+ca+to:bolinas+road,+fairfax,+ca+to:alpine+lake,+marin,+ca+to:pan+toll+road,+marin+ca&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mr&sll=37.980955,-122.65874&sspn=0.253293,0.597382&ie=UTF8&z=11)

Tambux-->  Highway 1/Shoreline -->  Panoramic Hwy (over Tam) --> PCH-->  Pt. Reyes Station --> Pt. Reyes/Petaluma Rd  -->  Platform Bridge Rd  -->  Sir Francis Drake -->  Fairfax-->  Fairfax/Bolinas Road--> Alpine Lake--> Bolinas Ridge Road-->  Pan Toll Road--> Panoramic Hwy --> Hwy 1 -->  Tambux.

Couple random thoughts:

1)  I can't wait for all the bicycle races to end.  That is two weekends now that we're come across hordes of bikers on PCH in the North Bay.

2)  WTF is up with DY crossing?  I had two cars come across the double yellow today.  And not just a little.  A bunch.  One was a van that was almost entirely in my lane to try to go around a biker.  It was a great reminder as to why I'd been going so slow through that section.  I wanted a cushion in case of something like, and lo and behold, I needed it.  Whew.

3)  That woman that tried to back into my bike at the gas station was sooooo f'n lucky that she heard me screaming at her and locked up her brakes before impact.  .  I woulda beat her to death with her toddler.  >:(

Excellent ride.  Thanks to our leaders.  Great pace.   [thumbsup]    I was shocked at how little mileage was actually covered.  Goat trails are a work out, so I'm glad we didn't ride much longer.

Some added thoughts to your thoughts....

1. As a cyclist I noticed that bikes come up fast and you can't hear 'em.  I always like it when motos give me a bit of room.  I try to ride single file when on the bicycle, but when you're grinding up some mother-luvin' steep grade, it's nice to have some company beside you instead of sucking wind from behind someone's behind. But I'm with ya...I don't like pedal-people when I'm on the moto.

2.  ... no problems here.

3. I gave her $5 and instructions to "just get close enough to scare him."  Toooootally worth it.   [laugh]

+1 on the DY crossings...

Most drivers just seem clueless as to when it is appropriate to make the pass.  The idea of a blind corner or traffic coming the other direction just doesnt cross their mind.  (i know MM... you can call me kettle)

I have gotten waved on by drivers because they want me to pass them at some of the most rediculous times.  I guess that is better than being raced by a carolla with a teenage girl driver in it  :o

This coming from the guy with the amazing Steelman that enzo's been borrowing. You know you want to ride it...you know you want to do Paradise Loop with us.  [cheeky] [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

I'm not pregnant dogin' about pedal bikes generally, just those big organized rides/races.  Two out of the last three times I've been in the north bay, there's been hundreds or even a coupla thousand bikers in some organized race/ride.  It's a total clustermake the beast with two backs.

I think the pedal bikes around here are better behaved on the road than cars or motorcycles. They have good road awareness and they're generally pretty good about staying waaaay to the right and giving motorcycles space.  I think it helps that Ducs are loud, and they can hear us coming and get over.

My comment to your comment about my comment re: bicycles.  [laugh] It wasn't to you...just to the moto population at large that might consider bicyclists as a total pain in the butt.  I saw ya givin' a thumbs-up to all of them.   [thumbsup]

Re your comment to my comment about your comment re the immense size of my manhood (or was it bicycles?):

Anyone who drags their ass up a hill that I wouldn't dare attempt without a motor gets a thumbs-up.  At a minimum.   [thumbsup]  Besides, if they're on a bicycle, they're not in a cage trying to kill me.   ;)

As a pedal-biker, I'm always happier to be passed by a moto than by a car or truck.

And I'd much rather be passed by a sportbike than a Harley...the latter are always way too loud and take forever to pass.

(I did almost pass a Harley on my roadbike a couple of weeks ago...would have done it if he hadn't blocked me. [evil])

Kettle.

It was a fun ride, even with the bikes and DY passers. And datv didn't run out of gas again and got his weekly dose of goat trails, so it was all good.

Oh, and mirth points to spidey for pretend kicking that bicyclist as we went through Forest Knolls. I was LOL in my helmet over that one.
