Post by: tristantumble on October 03, 2008, 05:22:37 AM
Well, its getting colder and colder by the day, just wanted to hear how you guys/gals store your bikes for winter. drain the fuel/add stabalizer and pull the battery? thats all i was going to do, is there any extra steps required?

thanks

For bikes with plastic tanks they actually recommend filling her up to the top. How you do that AND disconnect the battery beats me though (as you need to lift up your tank, which you can't do if it's filled up). I use a battery tender and leave the battery connected.

If you gonna leave it sitting for awhile get the rubber off the ground -- use stands.

(Or, move to the south.)
(Or, send you bike to me, I'll take care of it over the winter.)

Perhaps disconnecting the battery before you fill up the tank  ;)

Even then you eventually have to reconnect the battery ;)

I hooked up a quick disconnect cable on my battery.  So last winter I filled it up, threw some sta-bil in, put it on stands, and plugged in the battery tender to the quick disconnect.

Fired up great when the time came!

i'm not winterizing either

garage has radiant heat, and sometimes we get a break in the weather  [moto]

stabil, battery tender, and putting it up on stands seem easy enough though...

Nor am I winterizing. Bike is messy looking anyway so I may as well ride in the rain.  [moto]

Gotta agree.....F winterizing your bike. As long as the roads are clear I try to get out once in a while.

Last time I did last winter I was at a long light with a few other monsters. I'm watching condensation drip off the tailpipe of the car in front of us.....and I watch as this FREEZES on the ground.

Don't know how I talked myself into riding that day, but I DID have fun.

I'd ride mine thru winter if I thought it would actually start below 40. Oh yeah, and if they didn't put salt down. Steel frame + salt is bad. I put Stabil in, fill it, ride home and put a blanket on it.
I will be riding the Gasgas all winter though.

I live in West Texas.  We get a few cold months, mainly rain.  The longest my bike will go with out being ridden is a month.  Two if we have an extreme winter.  But even then I probably won't be riding it everyday.   Those who aren't winterizing... what do you do for short breaks?  How often do you star it, warm it up?

I ride through the cold also (not that North Carolina really gets that cold).  Being a full time student, with a full time job supervising 69 people, a 2 year old, and 7 month old at home, I need the sanity breaks year round.  It's worth freezing my nuts off to have a little peace.
