Hell yeah and I rode it today! [thumbsup] ;D
Been pondering over one for a while now.
Here are the facts.
My shoulder has been bothering me. Don't know if it is related to the tree hitting me a few years ago or not.
I bought a DRZ 400 this year and fell in love with the riding postion. I could ride it forever.
So last weekend I go to Cliff's BMW / Ducati in Danbury CT last weekend for October fest.
The ground is wet so not demo's >:(
Got to see four different ones with all kinds of "bits" on them.
Today I go back to Cliff's for a demo and to check the trade in on the Monster.
Ride report:
After signing my life away We go outside he gives me the keys and tells me a route. I start her up. The bike sounds sweet with the Termongoni exhasut (probably wrong spelling but you know what I mean). Before I leave he tells me that the rear tire is new and only has 40 miles on it :(.
I sit on the bike and look around. The layout is nice and simple. All gauges located located right in front og the bars as ususal. Sitting there it feels like you are right over the front of the tire. I tried several times to sit back a little farther but it did not feel right at all. So as I leave the dealer you notice the immediate power of the Hyper. Damn! I thought the DRZ pulled but this bike wants to put the wheel in the air all the time.
The bike is very nimbe just like a dirt bike. I could not feel the weight difference between the DRZ and the Hyper.
The route took me through some nice roads of CT. I opted to not get on the highway as I punched some highway speeds on the roads I was on [evil]. This bike was meant to be pushed that's for sure.
The one thing that would take some getting used to for me at least is the turns. The monster just shift weight and hang off. The Hyper is quite taller the the monster so you feel caught between throwing the leg out and getting you butt off the seat while turning.
Mirrors were cool. You could move them in and out easily while riding and you can actually see somethign other than your elbow.
Summary:
I really liked it. Shoulder did not hurt in the least. The seating position would take some getting used to. The feeling of being over the front wheel would also take some getting used to.
Damn fun bike
Got some decisions to make.
Any HM owners opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading - Jim
Glad to hear you had fun today. [thumbsup] [moto]
I'm not in love with the Hyper, but would like to try one anyway. Maybe my mind would change. [roll]
It is also way tall for my 31" inseam. :P
On another note, I was at the dealer today and saw the pearl white Multi 1100S. I think the color fit it well.
Maybe you will ride a Hyper to DIBMY next year. [beer]
The bike corners far better than you might expect. It can get some pretty serious lean angles. Very upright riding position for any kind of freeway type speed driving. The seat gives you Monkey Butt.

This is exactly what I experienced during my test ride. The thing just falls into the corner and holds a line like a damn superbike. I *really* love the Hyper.
I went from an S2R to the Hyper, it solved a lot of arm pain and hand numbness, and is even more fun at any speed below 75mph. You get used to the cornering (it is a long way to lay the bike over it seems), but it holds great. I can only not reccomend it if you do much highway time at speed. Not cheap compared to the DRZ, but it has lots of good italian character.
:)
Okay, I guess I'll actually add something instead of just basking in how awesome the Hyper is.
I got used to the riding position very quickly. (And I came from an S4 with extremely low clip-ons.)
And after a couple of times ripping through some good corners on mine, I got pretty comfortable hanging way off it.
I think it has something to do with how close you sit to the handlebar, but I feel like I can comfortably hang off much farther in corners.
Handles like a dream.
Gobs of power and torque.
Extremely comfortable.
I haven't found a single thing I don't like about mine yet.
You couldn't pay me to go back to my old bike. (And I really loved that bike when I had it.)
I have an S2R1K and thinking of going to a Hyper, I have test ridden them a few times and what gets me the most is the seat, does anyone know if the Duc Perf seat offers any more support. I am begining to think my ass just doesnt like to be sitting, which reminds me its more comfortable to stand up on the hyper to stretch your legs out, anyone who has done this on a sportbike knows what im talking about.
why dont you wait for the 1100 monster and compare the two. then make the choice.
but this is kinda cool

I have a Corbin seat on mine and it's
far more comfortable than the stock saddle.
I rode a decked out "S" hyper, and came away somewhat happy. Not happy enough to pay 14K for it, but it was fun I suppose. Seemed pretty slow from what I'm used to, and had little to no top end hit.
I bought the S4Rt the same day, and although I don't have the "look" that the hyper does, I've got a much bigger grin on my face when I twist the trottle [bacon]
when i first rode my hyper the seat was not to my likeing so i replaced it with a ducati gel seat which is 28mm lower and a damsight more comfortable.you sit more into it rather than on top of it.
hey rameses shoot me a photo of your corbin seat please. [thumbsup]

Your old bike was almost too hot [laugh]
But the HM is pretty sweet.
I just went for a short test ride on the Hyper...
It was a lot of fun, but not enough to get rid of my S2R1k. ;D
And I didn't think the Hyper was all that bad as far as wind protection, I didn't ride it all day but I did get close to the ton. [thumbsup]
Gel seat seems the way to go.
I have a 32" inseam and had no trouble touching. Adding the gel seat will put me flat foot on it I believe.
As far as the wind on the test ride I had it going pretty good and the wind wasn't that bad at all.

I'm a 32" inseam also, and can easily flatfoot mine with riding boots on. With shoes, my heels touch the ground, but my knees are pretty straight.
I'll put my stock seat back on and see how it affects the flatfoot-ability.
Geoff, here's a pic with the Corbin. I was in the process of putting on a carbon fiber handlebar. I just finished that project up last night, so I'll take some pics of that sometime soon.
I'll email you the pic too. [thumbsup]

thanks John for the photo,it sure looks comfortable.
answer to the guy about wind blast is to try the ducati wind screen it makes rideing at speed alot more pleasant. [moto]
The Hyper is kinda fun, I've ridden 2 or 3 now but there's no way I'd swap my 1000DS Monster for one, the Monster is way quicker (ok it has a PC, customer map etc etc). I came away from riding the Hypers thinking it was under powered (try a KTM Super Duke...!) but would agree the handling is crisp, almost uncrashable with so much front end grip. What I hated was being say up so upright, making anything over about 80mph a real pain.
I guess its personal preference.
I just spent all day on my buddies HM1100S and it handles better than my S2R1K with thousands into the suspension. You say that the S2R1K is faster than an HM1100, perhaps in a straight away or highway pushing 120mph other than that I would have to call bullshit, of course it could just be me and I am more comfortable throwing a hyper around. who knows, dont get me wrong, I love my S2R1K but not as much as the HM1100S, trading her in this week for one.

I wasn't gonna say anything since I've never been on an S2R1000.

why dont you wait til you can test the Monster 1100.
The M1100 has 5hp more than the hyper... I am not sure how much of a difference that makes when riding them. if it's a lot.. then the new 1100 engine should be a lot of fun. Torque is the same but the hyper reaches the 76lb-ft at 4700rpms vs 6000 for the M1100.

And with the Termi kit, the Hyper's actually pushing around 83 lb-ft. [evil]

wow,.. very cool.. so you would say that the new M1100 should be as much fun as you motard..

dont forget to subtract about 25 lbs for the 1100.

No idea.
Completely different bikes.
I like the Hyper riding position a lot now that I'm used to it though.
dont get me wrong, I love the looks of the new Monster 1100 and with the new motor and S spec suspension its going to be a huge improvement over the current model. However let me give you a short list of things it doesnt have when comparing it to the Hypermotard, rear Ohlins shock without compression adjustment (your kidding right, whats the point) two piece cast radial brakes in instead of the monoblocks, no rear ride height adjustment, no pretty magnesium bits, (while the new case covers are cast with new technology the magnesium bits are sharp) lets not forget the step backwards in regards to the one piece rearsets / pass pegs, the wheels are cast aluminum and not the typical S spec forged aluminum wheels, and the seating position, well lets just say you have plenty of room to move around and sit anywhere you want as long as its up against the tank. I would also like to say that the new Monster is using Seimans electronics for the fuel mapping and what not, call me crazy but if it aint broken dont fix it, Magneti Marelli has been a Ducati tradition since, oh I dont know, the begining of time.
sorry I dont want to come off as hater of sorts but I have just weighted the options over and over again and this is what I have come up with, not to mention the msrp for the M1100 is 14500 and I can get a HM1100S for 14K mainly because they will discount the HM and not the Monster 1100 because its new and they know they will sell, and they will.
I have an 07 S2R1K that I picked up about 3 months ago. I've put about 3500 miles on it and have enjoyed the fool out of it. However, I made a big mistake by test riding the HM1100S a couple weeks ago. I fell in love with it! I'm 5'9" so it was a little tall when I first sat on it. That was the main reason I didn't consider it when I bought the S2R... Well, once I was in motion, I enjoyed the heck out of it. It was quick, nimble and stopped really well. I actually felt more comfortable making turns on the HM than the S2R. Am I crazy? Maybe it's because I rode dirtbikes as a kid??
Anyway, I'm trying to find out if it is possible for me to make the trade. I'd hate to eat too many thousands!
dont forget they also make a lower seat which will help with your height issue. I am 5'10" with a 29" inseam so I have a tough time touching but that has never bothered me, tippy toes is fine at a light or I just lean a bit more to one side and I can flat foot on that side. Hell I raised the ride height of the Monster so it was almost higher than the HM.
It's a personal thing I know, but when I think of spending practically the same $$$ on both, the Monster s4rs looks better to me.
The 1100S has 1.4" more front wheel travel, and it's 15 mm. longer wheelbase. Both are listed at 390 lbs. and the S4RS carries 2.7 liters (6 lbs.) water.
Ground clearance is not a problem on either.
Both make 76 lb.ft. of torque, though at different rpms and the Monster makes 40 more HP.
MSRP is $1000 more for the Monster and for the specs. it's cheap to me.
But if I had the money to have both? Nope, I'd get a 1098R model instead. ;D
