Title: The change from 2000 to 2001
Post by: DesmoDisciple on October 04, 2008, 09:23:21 AM
So I just bought a 2000 900S, and I find myself a bit perplexed.

If I understand this correctly, the engine is the same as all of the FI models leading up the 1000. But the body work/frame seem to be the 'old' style of the original monster. Is this correct? Its seems like the 2000 was a transition year of sorts.....

Any help appreciated.

2000 was the first year of the 900cc monster going to injection. the rest of the monsters at the time were still running carbs into 01, and 02 was the first year of all the monsters going IE with the new frame.

2000 was the first year of the 900cc monster going to injection. the rest of the monsters at the time were still running carbs. The next year, all the bikes went to injection and the updated frame was released. With that came the new injection metal tanks too.

i'm pretty sure that the frames were the 851 style in '01, too. think that the monsters all went to the ST style frame in '02.

'00 and '01 M900 were injected, but the early style 1.5 ECU.

'01 S4 was the first Monster application of the 5.9 ECU, and also the introduction of the ST-style frame.

All other Monsters '01 and prior were carbureted.

All Monsters in '02 were fuel injected, with the 5.9 ECU, and all had the ST-style frame.

Since '02, the only Monster not using the 5.9 ECU is the 696, and it also uses the new frame.

All Monsters '01 and prior, other than the S4, were the 851-style frame.

Yes 2000 and 2001 are the same
I think very good years because they had the simple ECU's and big tanks

Thanks for the info guys. I was shopping for frame sliders, and I notice that Speedy Moto has a different kits for 93-00 and 01 to the present.

The website is correct.  The only addendum I can add to Speeddog's posting is that the 2000 & prior Monsters used a 10mm engine mounting bolt and the 2001 to 2008 used a 12mm engine mounting bolt.  Don't know about the 696 yet.
