Title: Clutch Fluid
Post by: Mumbles on October 06, 2008, 02:16:28 PM
The last couple times I rode my Monster (96 M900) the clutch lever seemed to engage closer and closer to the handlebar. I checked the fluid in the resevoir and it was empty. I don't see any signs of leaking at the resevoir or master cylinder. Any suggestions for what casued this? :-[

More than likely a leaking slave cylinder.

Check the slave cylinder of leaks. If you've noticed any kind of sludge/grime building up at the sidestand, that's one obvious sign. But do check the slave itself to see if there's anything leaking out.

If you didn't know already, the slave is on the left hand side of the bike, just in front of the counter sprocket cover (if in place) held in place by three bolts. If it is leaking from the slave, I think the older slaves are rebuildable, or you could go for an aftermarket slave from one of several manufacturers.

Good luck!

The same thing happened to me. I pulled the slave off and worked the lever and saw fluid leaking out. My new one is in the mail as I write this. I thaught of rebuilding but newer ones claim to be 30% easier to squeeze and Im usally in alot of traffic so I opted for an STM that ran $190. Good luck

Thanks guys...I don't see any leaks around the slave. I put more fluid in the resevoir and bled the slave. I haven't ridden it yet but the lever feels better.

Boy, $190 for slave cylinder. Ouch..
