Thanks for clarifying what Betamax was. Did the tapes look like VHS tapes?

Sorta... just a different size. I do believe the quality was better... but Sony was really stupid with how they marketed and sold the machines.

Sweet!! Oh wait... $99 for the player and $35 for shipping? Yikes... I can get a DVD player for less than the shipping cost. Oh well.
Looks like Sony won out this time around though. Blu-ray Vs. HD DVD

I was watching some documentary on Discovery on Betamax vs VHS. They say that one reason why the VHS won over Betamax is because the porn industry was "standardizing" to VHS.

This was also sited as why Blu-ray won.
The FW 190D was the greatest prop-driven fighter plane, ever.

Good choice. At the top of my list, too.
Although, hard to argue against the Merin-engined Mustang. The Allison motor was a dog . . .
Wait just one cotton picken darn minute.... this is not a thread to be jacked.... no switchen to them new fangled aero plain thingamabobs.... this here is a porn conversat... er... uh.... video cassette conversation. Now where did I place my laser disc collection. ;D

The SONY PS3 is another big reason.
My parents still own a beta and watch movies on it. [thumbsup]
I'm suprised the "Smokey and the Bandit" and "Porkies" tapes still work!!
And you can never have too much Dolly Parton or Burt Reynolds, so "The Little Whorehouse in Texas" is probably third most played.
honestly, i don't know that i want to watch porn in HD.
the imperfections that will be shown now will totally ruin the fantasy. [laugh]

Very true.
But there's something special about hearing splatters in 7.1 surround sound.

well the scene selection feature by itself makes it better than VHS. I wasn't arguing that.
all I'm saying is when i watch quality porn (i.e. something i would actually pay for) i want to imagine that she is perfect. i don't want to see makeup caked on and all the pores and ass zits that i wouldn't be able to tell were there if it was in standard def. seeing all of that will just ruin the fantasy, do you want to ruin my fantasy?
WHY!? why do you want to do that to me? it's not liek i ask for much, why can't you let me have this ONE thing?
you dick.
betamax should have never been invented.
My parents still have a Beta that works. Few cassettes too. Every once in a while when there's too many things they want to watch at the same time it will still get used to record stuff.

A friend of mine still has an 8 track in there car.
Saw a great interview the other night on Charlie Rose with Sony chair Sir Howard Stringer.
http://www.charlierose.com/shows/2008/10/08/2/a-conversation-with-sir-howard-stringer-chairman-ceo-sony-corporation (http://www.charlierose.com/shows/2008/10/08/2/a-conversation-with-sir-howard-stringer-chairman-ceo-sony-corporation) This sucker is an hour long but here's what's pertinent to this thread:
Mr Stringer was saying that for the Blu-Ray platform to launch successfully Sony needed to integrate it with all of their divisions (motion picture, dvd, consumer electronics, ps3 etc). It was the first time that they all worked in unison. Sony's reputation was on the line and could not survive a "Betamax 2."
I remember the VHS/Beta deal reasonably well. I remember my father going on about how Beta was better. I remember working in TV and seeing beta cameras. But I have never heard anyone actually state why Beta was 'obviously superior'. I'm not arguing it, I just want to know why.
Even though it's nearly 20 years too late. ;D
I have nothing to add to the porn or betamax convo

oh, and atari RULES!
I remember when Sony did hte same thing with Minidisks. They seemed like they were the next "CD" but they never caught on even though they were supposed to be better.

Minidiscs were awesome. Tiny, re recordable, nearly shock-proof digital audio. I think the issue was they were too small (physically) to be considered serious for home, and waaaaaaay too big compared to mp3 players. Alas, bad timing.
Two things killed Beta in the VCR wars. VHS had a longer maximum record time with 6 hours. Seems most people were concerned with quantity over quality, less tapes to buy. The biggie though was that Sony felt Beta was superior and if you wanted it, you'd buy it from them. They refused to license it to other manufacturers.
JVC, which owned VHS, sold the licenses to any manufacturer that wanted it. This increased competition and brought prices down much lower to what Sony was charging for Beta machines.
The porn industry didn't drive the VHS boom, they just supported it because it became the dominant format.
While we're solving mysteries from the past, can anyone explain why they feel HD-DVD is better than Blu-ray?
I always felt that it was 6 of one/half dozen of another. The biggest reason I felt confident banking on Blu-ray is because I know what sort of game-system juggernaut the PlayStation franchise is.
I thought they were equal technologies also. I also went with the Blu-Ray because of the PS3 platform. Thankfully our instincts were right on this one. 8)
