Title: FI bikes, really abrupt throttle response?

My Monster (2000 900) is an FI bike, the first FI bike I have ever ridden as far as I recall. The throttle response is great, but its an all or nothing deal. Either the throttle is ON, or its OFF. I find it difficult to make subtle changes to the throttle position, especially at parking lot speeds. Is this inherent to FI on bikes? Or am I just to new to the bike and rusty in the skills department?

Its probably not as bad as I'm making it out to be, but it seem like the carbed bikes had a lot more 'shades of gray' in terms of the feel of the throttle.

Edumicate me.

Related question, will gearing the bike down a bit lessen this feeling? First gear seems really tall on this puppy.

its all in the clutch.........


with that said, 44T rear, Rapid bike 3......ill will tell you how smooth it is. but not compared to a babys bottom casue hats child molesting..unless you have a kid.

I have an S2R 800 07, first fuel injected bike I've ever owned, I found the FI to quite smooth and easy to control, Now that I've had the Termi Exhaust and ECU fitted, it's even better.

But I will say I found the Ducati throttle is more sensitive than most other bikes I've ridden.

If you're not the 1st owner perhaps a quick action throttle has been fitted?

This spring I got my ST4 serviced at a different dealer than I had since I bought it. When I took it from their parking lot it responded as you describe and I wasn't use to it. It seems that they adjusted the freeplay in the throttle cable to a bare minimum.

You might want to check that out on your bike. If you have hardly any throttle freeplay...any bike will act like that, even carburated bikes...the throttle just seems too sensative.

How stiff/loose is the throttle assembly?  Mine was a bit stiff for a while before I took the front cap off and cleaned and lubed it up real nice like.  If you have an older, ill-cared for bike it may just be gunky.  You can tell by giving the handle a couple of twists with the bike off to make sure it's nice and smooth.  Reach down and twist the throttle cam as well to make sure it's not jumpy or rough. 

If that's not the problem then it's probably pretty normal.  On my S2R800 I can twist the throttle MAYBE a couple of degrees and get a good 10mph more out of it.  I'm pretty used to it now but I really love that it's there when I get the opportunity to really crack it open.  It's just so gratifying  ;D.  As far as riding at parking lot speeds, it's definitely all about the clutch like He Man said.  At a comfortable rpm (3500+ ish) first gear runs at around 15-20 or so mph (if memory serves) which is usually too fast for low speed maneuvers.  Feather the clutch a little bit and she'll be happy as a clam.

without wanting to sound like a know all, sanctimonious wanker, i'd say it's set up badly - throttle position sensor, balance, idle mixture mainly.  it can make a huge difference.

but the throttle cable bit is quite valid too.
