Title: Fall foliage & jumping out of stuff
Post by: EvilSteve on October 14, 2008, 09:12:38 AM
Guys, I know you're all like motorbiking types but there has been some interest in jumping out of stuff at 2+ miles high. If you're considering it, now is an awesome time as the leaves are turning and no one will be going slow in front of you in free fall. ;) The weather has been nice & cool which makes the plane ride a little more comfortable.

I'm attempting to get another 13 jumps before the end of the season to make my 100 so I should be around if you decide to go to the Ranch (http://www.skydivetheranch.com/).

13 jump huh....thats how many it takes to get the AFF cert.... :)

 ;D

Well, you technically need 25 to get your A license and the number to get your AFF varies depending on the program you follow but I get what you mean. ;)

I did 6 jumps this past weekend, one on Saturday, 5 on Sunday. I'm pretty sure I'll get to 100 but I don't like to be too fixated about anything when I'm jumping from a plane or riding a bike, it's best to be prepared for the unknowns. ;)

The other thing, when you're a student, you're always sitting around waiting for something or other. The weather, a rig, an instructor or coach, etc. When you have your own gear, you just have to pack it and get on a plane. ;)

Seriously though, ride up to the DZ, make your jump and then ride away, it's very pretty (and all that shit). ;D

I'm lucky that I don't need to choose.

For everyone else's reference, it's like $190 (I think) to do a tandem at the ranch, other drop zones might be cheaper.

Evil,
These posts are quite inspirational.  I've always wanted to (1) sky dive and (2) try the squirrel suit.  However, the markets are too dumpy right now for me to take on a new hobby.  Keep posting and pic too!

Sure. Everyone else let me know if these posts are annoying, I don't want to be a hypocrite. Well, ok, more of a hypocrite...  [laugh]

I should have some more recent vids soon, I can always PM people who are interested rather than spam everyone.

I have a video of me jumping with my wife from this past weekend, leaves and all that jazz, you know. ;)

I don't remember if I'd posted my youtube account before but here it is. The vids are a bit old but there are skydiving & moto vids in there.

I've ridden so little this year, I don't know if I have much to add.

Doesn't always have to be about motorcycling, most of us aren't one trick ponies!

Yeah, that wasn't me. It was a friend of mine. I'm a pansy when it comes to pulling low. ;)

Definitely up for a jump though. I'll probably be getting my coach rating next year so if any of you bastids want coach jumps, let me know. ;)

Does anyone wingsuit up there?

Indeed they do. I don't have enough jumps to wingsuit but I'm really keen to try it when I do.

It may sound silly that I really don't have too much of an interest in free fall skydiving (although have never been) but wingsuit flying just sounds incredible. I read now that with the newer suits they are getting 3:1 glide ratios and reducing the average vertical speed to 45mph, that must be a completely different experience. I see that you need 200/500 jumps before you get to try one of these it might be enough to motivate me to do it but that is a huge commitment. With the amount of money I've spent on flight training to try and soar like the birds I could have bought a 1098 by now. My obsession with flight have resulted in more skiing and motorcycling because I liken the sensation and freedom of control to that of being in the air. I have to say right now I am tight on $$$ and lack the time to take up another adrenaline seeking activity but that is certainly one of the coolest airborne pursuits I have ever seen and I'm sure I will force myself to make it happen.  What happened to the drooling icon!?!?

There's a guy talking about trying to land a wingsuit, NASA is helping. :-|

I did my 100th jump this past weekend, if I can get the video on youtube, I'll post it.

Thanks guys. ;D

I've posted a higher quality version from vimeo (I'll have to get my bike vids on there too) because it's way better quality.

Enjoy. ;)
