I just bought my son his first bike (a delayed college graduation gift)

The guy I bought it off, even delivered it to my work [thumbsup]
Why'd you let IZ take the picture? ???

that's my cheapie cell camera pic. I'll take a few with lms camera tonight.
The thing only has 5500 miles on it. Everything works. It fired right up after sitting for months.
one tiny tear in the seat. no fork seal leaks, no oil leaks. the front tire is a lil weather cracked. it has a few scrapes and scratches, but no dents or dings. he gave me a new set of rear brakes (the ones that are on it squeak)
chain looks new, no wear marks on the front and rear sprocket.
all the electrical works.
I'm gonna replace the hand grips, change the fluids, check out front tire prices...and she be done.
Don't foget the duct tape for the back seat :)
I bet you have one happy kid [thumbsup]

You'd better put it through an extensive battery of riding tests as well. [thumbsup]
Cause uhh, giving it as a gift without ummm, verifying its safety would be wrong.
Yeah, that's it. ;D

C... come pick it up (and have a beer with his old man)

Someone needs to tow that thing away for parking in Ducati reserved space.
I can be there right away to remove that hooligan bike from holy ground. ;D
Nice bike though. [thumbsup]
I've put in some miles on the exact same bike and always had a grin on my face!
Your son will love it. They are great commuters as well.
Lucky kid, great dad!
Congrads Dad... oh... and son!

I talked to the guy I bought it off of, and he was going to the DMV this afternoon to drop off the papers I signed yesterday, and he's going to pick up the paperwork to get a title copy, sign all stuff he has to sign, then drop it all off at my work. I be lucky.
I think he feels bad for not telling me about the left crank case seal leaking as bad as it does, and for telling me the head gasket was a 5 dollar part and that it leaked just a lil .... try 45 bucks and it smokes like Nate. [laugh]
I like it. [thumbsup]
if that frame is anything like the fram on my XR, which i suspect it is, you'll need to take the motor out to replace that head gasket.

but looking at it last night.... It kinda looked like the motor may have to be pulled :-\

i was convinced that i would have just enough room to slide the head off.
a couple of bolts are also blocked by the frame. good luck.

Nope.
Jobu sprayed a header pipe with that stuff.
Did absolutely nothing else to it before slamming it back on.
Looked great all the way up until he took it off to replace it with a ceramic coated header.

ok well just to let you know.. fuel kills it. had a fuel spill on the heat shield i painted with it. i thought it would be tougher than that cause it should be exposed to bbq lighter fuel. that's why i asked about cooking it to make it stronger.

You might have bigger problems than paint running if you're spilling gas on your header.

i was drainig the tank for shipping...
grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
got up early, went to autozone and picked up a bearing puller (to help remove the left side case), some gasket goop, carb cleaner and engine degreaser.
The head went back on pretty much trouble free, even the tricky decompression valve pin stayed in place. Then set about removing the left case. The only real hard part, was removing all the old gasket residue. Reassembled the cover, and set about putting the engine back in. After wresting it into place, I set about bolting everything back together. About three bolt shy of being done, I see, sitting atop the work bench, the rear head decompression lever....... SHIT! The only way to put it back in, is to remove the head.... and that means pulling the engine back out >:(.
I remind myself.... it's an adventure.
So.... after showering, and going out to watch lms son play baseball, I return to the garage, and proceed to pull the motor again. weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I'm getting good at this, cuz I did it in half the time, as the first go-round.
As I pull the head off, I destroy the $45.00 gasket, and drop the compression valve pin deep into the motor.... double SHIT!
Thankfully, flipping the motor upside down causes the pin to fall back out.
Time to call it a day.
I ordered another gasket, and a couple of other small gaskets for spots where oil had built up, so hopefully when everything comes in.... I'll be mistake and oil free, having learned on the first try.
Well, hit by a small bullet, but dodged a big one. [thumbsup]

most of the parts that fit the 600r also fit the 650l
gotta love a good design eh?

You'd have plenty of time after LM throws you out..... :P
I put her back together late yesterday. Bolting the carbs back on >:( grrrrrrrrrrrr The spacer between the cylinder and the carbs has changed shape over time, and it caused the bolts to line up just a lil off.
put fresh oil in her just a lil bit ago..... and she fired right up.
the bbq paint.... smoked like a mofo as it warmed up. After letting her cool down, it stopped smoking after restarting it.
I think I'll try tackling a valve adjustment next. ;D

hehe. i have read about that problem. mine has the magic button though i wouldn't mind having a kick for when i drain the battery in winter. :-\
there are quite a few threads on advrider about methodology for kicking the big singles over.
also be careful that you don't break your leg or get launched off the bike
I've seen some pretty serious carnage over on ThumperTalk from big singles kicking back. You need like a steel gauntlet for you leg to kick one over without risk of serious injury ~

i am referring to neither.
i am merely using my knowledge of ancient armor, from which modern pieces of motorcycling gear would get theri name, to correct mr journeyman's incorrectitudedness.
i wouldn't want you go go out and buy a pair of gloves thinking that they would protect your shin from the kickback of that motor.
