ok so not to be to dumass but will adding /changing the weight of oil in the forks of an s2r help ???
i got the bum ok now with the 999 showa rezzy shock but would like a cheap way to help the front untill i figure out which way to go
so any other ideas for the front ?
i am getting the suspnsion setup properly for sag etc
What do you ride? (800?) What do you weigh?
Simple and cheap? Springs. Depending on how much you change 'em, maybe a different weight oil.
Next step up would be cartridges. Big improvement, but you are way beyond cheap at that point.
This is a very tricky thing. I would suggest you call someone like Jason at Dept of Suspension. A great guy and a wealth of info (and willing to give it up too). There are so many variables in your equation. Like mmakay said, rider weight, riding style, what you have already done to the rear of the bike, temps where you live and ride etc.
A small change in oil level or viscosity can make a giant change in what the forks do. And not always in the way you think it will.
Talk to Jason or any other reputable suspension tuner before you start messin'...
I just had both sets of forks serviced on my bikes by a suspension expert, Phil at Aftershocks Suspension. I don't think either bike had had anything done to the forks since new, which would be 10 years for the ST2 and 15 years for the 888. Fork oil degrades over time, and the oil in the 888's forks had degraded enough to make them not work as well. I didn't bother having either sets of forks revalved or anything, since they both have compression and rebound adjustments, and both sets came out working quite well. But while they were being serviced, all internal parts were examined and the fork seals were replaced.
You might start by putting in a quality 7 wt. fork oil and see if that helps. I intend to change my fork oil at least every five years from here on.
