Title: Can you put a street tire through too many heat cycles?
Post by: cm on October 21, 2008, 07:23:16 AM
I am currently on Michelin 2CT street tires and have been bitten by the track-day bug.  Since the temps at the track are much higher than temps on the street,  I was wondering whether you can 'use up' a set of street tires through heat-cycling (6 heat cycles per track day).   They look like they'll have enough tread to last a while but wondering if I should be worrying about them having gone through too many heat cycles and get rid of them before the treadwear indicators show...Anyone know how many extreme heat cycles street tires like the 2CT are designed for? I'm probably close to 50+ heat cycles with them (track temps) but they still show good tread.

AFAIK street tires don't heat cycle out like race rubber.

If you have enough tread you should be fine.

The good news is, when you do wear them out chemically, they'll prolly let you know without killing you....  Probably.  If you are riding at track speeds wherein the PR2CTs aren't slipping, you shouldn't get too worried.  But when they startto push a little at the limit, finish the turn rubber side down, and return to the paddock.

To give you an idea of the resiliance of those tyres though.  I have the same on my S2R1K, and it gets an ACH ride in 5 days a week, and they've never discolored or misbehaved, though the front is cupping a little caus I've been a little nervey since the crash.

On the other hand, Julia's Monster has BT-018(?) 3CT tyres shoedd on, and they're at the wear bar at approx 1000miles.  and discolored...  And all that with only one SLOW (Fem-Moto) track weekend on them.

(6 heat cycles per track day).................. I'm probably close to 50+ heat cycles with them (track temps) but they still show good tread.

That would be around 9 track days on one set of tires and still passing tech inspection?!!!!!

If this is the case, I wouldn't worry about any potential heat cycles you may be putting them through.
