Title: tips on my tank paint scheme idea?
Post by: djomlas on October 23, 2008, 08:15:28 PM
so yeah, my bike is a dark model.
i just go a red tank.
i will take those silver ducati decals off.
so....
plain red tank...what to do?

some gold letters?  stripe down the middle maybe?  or the side bulges in gold?
anything else?
anyone maybe have pics of something?
maybe those eagles or something of that nature...

anyone?

this is what the bike looks now, just the tail light is black now

Looks damn fine just like it is.  [thumbsup]   I don't think I'd put a red tank on it.

red tank= no dent  :)
black tank=dent  :(

so decal is cheaper than whole repaint and fixing the tank...
its for sale btw, as i dont wanna mess with fixing anything, and i think it can even be pulled out...

Powdercoat the headlamp tabs and passenger rearsets black, and call it good!

that's pretty sharp, but I gotta be honest, the dark tank is sexy especially w/ all of the subtle accents you've applied to the rest of the bike. I think either one would look great

I know you said don't say it, but.....I'd keep the dark tank and maybe put the gold ducati decal on that.

hahaha
well it is a dark model, so dark looks good, but that tank is dented and i am not fixing it, pulling the dent, or repainting it or doing anything to it, its for sale.

on the other hand, the red tank is going on ther in a few days, and well...i have till riding season starts to figure something out.

does anyone know if there are any decals that fill up the buldge on the sides? i hope that makes sense..

btw, the frame will get powdercoated red as well (if i get balls to take it awart)

Paint the red tank black and have the gold lettering done. I think thats what every one is trying to say.

Why would you want to do that??   :o

The dark frame is the best looking one out there.

I agree with the others do a black/dark tank with gold decals.   [thumbsup]

Well, if the red tank is a done deal, I'd concentrate on adding some red details to replace the gold ones.  It will help tie things together.  Red rim stripes would be a good start.

I'm gonna go against the grain and say the red tank with the gold decal is cool (though I like the dark, too) but the red is more bold.  Might be cool to add chrome-like gold in the knee depression on the tank if that makes sense.

Post by: djomlas on October 24, 2008, 10:41:55 AM
thx for the impot guys...
i dont want to do any paint work on it, just decals...if i was gonna paint it i wuld have fixed the other one and did that, so red stays.
i was just trying to see what else i can do to red tank on this bike that will help cordinate this better...thats all

i am not repainting the red tank to black and im not keeping the black tank that is on there because there is a dent on there and i dont want to fix that or mess with that at all...

so here we are, cliffnotes version...monster dark with plain no decal red tank....now what?  ;D

Maybe a red seat cowl would help accent the red tank and make the red look not so out of place.

Red rim stripes and get your shock spring painted/powdercoated to match.

I see that your exhaust is wrapped. Maybe some black cloth tape on the forks? Then paint/powdercoat the triples, headlight bracket and footrest/exh hanger to either match the frame or block.

Post by: djomlas on October 25, 2008, 10:34:54 AM
well the exhaust in the pic is gone, i have the low mounts, so im looking for a highmount as of now.
i tried wrapping the forks, but no success lol.well that was vinlyl, im not sure what you are referring to?
and soon ill be powdercoating bunch of stuff as i have a powdercoating system in the garage but have been lazy to take anything apart...

I was referring to black cloth hockey tape. TOB used to have a pic of a bike with this treatment but I could not find it. The vinyl tape looks cheesy IMO.

What about adding tech spec snakeskin grip pads to the tank?  Theyd be black, would lessen the amount of red and help it blend.  You can buy it by the sheet or precut.  I bought the sheet, and cut my own pattern.  Lots left over, so you could do a pattern.  The snakeskin looks textured, so it went great with the stock seat.

Part # 62-0053SS
Snake Skin
(Precut Kit)
$44.95

Getting too busy, IMO.

Did you mention it's for sale? Just sell it as is, and include the spare tank.

I have a ColorRite "Dark" paint kit sitting here that I would sell at discount.  You sure you don't want to paint the new tank??

hahah, nahh
i think it will look great once the frame is red with res stripes on the wheels and possibly get a red stripe on the front fender with that cool ducati course logo in the middle.
i need to photoshop all that to get a good idea.

thx for the advices guys, i really do appreciate it

That looks pretty cool - I think a red frame would kill the look, though.  What about a gold frame?

Do not--under any circumstances--paint it with tiger stripes.  In fact, it's prolly wise to stay away from all animal themes.   ;D

A bit off subject, but relevant never the less, is there a quick and easy way to explain how to use Photoshop to do what you did with the picture of your tank and rims? I have been toying with color ideas, but my photoshop skills are like I was using Microsoft Paint!  [laugh]

I don't know how tight your wallet is on this but you should just do it right and send it to Ducpainter, he did the same font on mine and color matched the gold on the gas cap to the lettering. I just cannot picture this actually looking good unless it's handled correctly, it's a nice bike I'd just think you'd rather treat it as such, somewhat surprised after all the time and thought you put into it thus far that you are going to throw decal letters and a mis-matched tank. I say take your time if you need to save over the Winter and then send it for a nice paintjob in the Spring, red with a decal for a short term is fine but eventually I think it would bother me.

i talked to a shop here and they said they can fix my original tank for $350 with paint, so i might just do that :)

The red cowl would looke better and add more red. I would keep the Monster fender, but probably paint that red, also.......I'm wondering what the headlight bucket or just the headlight bezel would look like on the bike if one of those was painted red (but not both of them).

I'd definitely leave the frame black, though
