Title: m696 check engine light
Post by: DOUMA on October 26, 2008, 07:53:37 PM
I am new to the motorcycling scene and the m696 is my first bike.  I have had nothing but bad luck with this thing.  The second day I had it I had to have it towed back to the shop due to the return spring within the transmission breaking into 4 pieces.  Now the check engine light is coming on, and the bike is shutting down to one cylinder.  I took the bike in and the dealership had it for three weeks and said that the ignition coils were bad (both of them), so they replaced them.  Just got the bike back four days ago and now it is doing the same thing again.  Just for some more info on my bike, it is a US bike, and has the cf termis on it... any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry about the problems its not fun.  On my 696 i had the cf termi put on, the day i got it back my engine light keep coming on and not starting etc. after a few trips to the dealer they ended up finding out there was a short in the wiring "somewhere". they striped the complete wiring of another 696 and swaped it onto mine.
hope this is of help in your situation keep us updated

If you bike was built prior to 05/26/2008 then it might be the wires to the coils and not the coils. There is a service bulletin stating that the wires are reversed. Here is a snipet from the bulletin.

Subject: COIL WIRING

Models: Monster 696 M.Y. 2009

Description of the technical issue:

• Erratic operation of the engine around 4,000 r.p.m. characterized by increase in engine temperature, detonation, loss of power and rough running.

Description of the technical problem diagnosis:

• Reversed connection of the electric wires to the coil connectors

Description of the technical issue solution:

• Repositioning of the electric wires to the coil connectors

Technical solution implementation:

• From frame number ZDMM500AA8B004001 onwards (production date 05/26/2008) the coil wires have been properly installed during production

I sure hope that you get it sorted out.  Check to make sure the issues fall under the Lemon Law before throwing it out there to the dealer, etc.

Reluctantly i went on my way. My issue happened at 400 miles and knock on wood never again. I feel your pain, that was a shity experience.

well i went to pick up my bike today after taking it in yesterday to fix the problem...the dealership replaced the wires going from the coils to the plugs, the computer, and the coils (again).  I got on the freeway to go home and after about 20 mins of driving it, the same problem occured (shutting down to one cylinder and cel coming on, not to mention the loss of power causing the bike to go from 75 to 40 almost instantly).  I returned to the dealer and told them that the problem had not been fixed.  The service manager immediately got on the phone with Ducati N.A. and talked to the guy in charge of all the service in the U.S. and now they are rush shipping an entire wiring harness from Italy...

as far as qualifing for the texas lemon law, i believe that this would fall under two catagories. first is the defective parts catagory, where a problem has to occur and an attempt to fix it  has to be made twice, and then two more times witin 12000 miles.  the second catagory is safty hazard, which i think is where i would be filing because this problem is happening at high speeds with several cars all around me (which i feel is very unsafe fr me and the people around me), only has to happen and be "fixed" twice and reoccur again within 12000 miles... and all my problems have happened starting at 900 miles and the bike currently has less than 1100 miles on it...

let me know what you guys think...

also if any one knows the number for the customer service department of ducati north america i would appreciate it

appreciate all the support
