Title: Is this problem related to my charging system?
Post by: Charlief on November 04, 2008, 05:29:13 PM
I have Rizoma LED signals on all four corners.  Wired in correctly and have worked flawlessly for the last year.  And by that I mean they have a stock/normal blink rate.

At idle the signals (when activated) will blink faster than normal.  Blipping the throttle to raise rpms' makes the signals blink at the normal rate.

Is this related to the reg/alt?

I haven't put a meter on the leads yet to see if current/volt change to the signals when revving engine.  I'll do that over the weekend.

Any info is appreciated.

If you consider that voltage at idle is about 12.8 and at about 2500-3000 it's closer to 13.5 it makes sense to me.

True

So are you saying that there is a problem with my system?  The signals never did this before so I'm thinking a little trouble is brewing.  I'll get into it this weekend.

I'd look into the battery.

Or the connections in the blinker circuit.

Put a voltmeter across the battery.  You should be reading about 12.6 volts.  Start the bike.  At idle you should see a slightly higher reading.  At 3K RPM you should see 13.7 (13.5 is close enough at the battery) to 14.5 volts.  If so, you your charging system is OK.  If not, post your readings.  While you are there, make sure your battery and stator to regulator are tight and clean.

Your problem does not sound charging system related to me.  Low voltage should make them blink slower, not faster.  I forgot what you are riding, refresh me please.  How are you controlling flash rate?  Electronic flasher, resistors, nothing?

Thanks for the info guys.  I'm goingt o take things apart this weekend whenI have free time.  I'm thinking lose connection.

05 S2R 800  Rizoma LED signals  with resistor boxes      stock flasher

as stated before ... absolutely no problems for the last year.

What is the blink rate with engine off, key on? If its ok, you can rule out lack of charging. Check for a lose ground if thats the case

I just had the opposite problem.  At idle I had a normal flash rate, higher revs gave me inconsistent / erratic flash.  A new electronic flasher took care of it.

Thats what I'm thinking I'm gonna do.

I went through it yesterday and all ceonnections were fine so I'm going to replace the stock flasher.

okaaaaaaaaaaay.  I just went down and popped the tank off.  No flasher to be found so I did a little DMF search and found that the flasher is electronic and built into the gauge package on MY 05.  Oh well....  when I have more time I will really get into it over the winter.
