Title: DML thoughts by the DMF admins
Post by: Statler on May 11, 2008, 07:04:38 AM
I'll spare everyone the fine print and disclaimers because you're all better than that.  Of course the guys who put this together are in no way trying to destroy the DML nor would we want anyone else to try.  That should be obvious from any post of any of us anywhere.

<admin hat off>

I know everyone is pissed off.   We've left many of the threads concerning it in the general moto area where they are most visible, but we'll start moving them to NMC soon.    More importantly, we'd hope that people spend that energy doing something cool here instead anyway.

Our DMF guidelines do not apply elsewhere, and I'd never suggest that someone's actions or words elsewhere has any effect here...they don't.    But to the extent I have any influence at all in the matter, I would ask that people pause to consider that if they are doing something intentionally to be a pain in the ass for their own reasons, fine, but that nobody here is asking them to do it on our behalf and would frankly prefer they didn't.

Being enthusiastic about here and wanting to tell other people about the site for the purpose of bringing people in to contribute, or wanting to share the place with people who could benefit from it is fantastic.    Being enthusiastic about here and wanting to tell people about it with the intention of screwing over someone else is rather lame.

So let's work on building up here some of what we lost instead of running back to set fires in the burned out building.

Chris

Is it OK if we throw rocks at the windows of the burned out building? You know...cause they are gonna bulldoze it anyway? ;)

Seriously though, after posted Chipo's video in overm 50 threads at the lesser place, I feel purged of most of my venom. The only problem I have left is trying to get them to remove the DRIowa board from their site. We aren't much of a club but I don't want it associated with that place.

Most of you know I'm not very eloquent, nor do I mince many words. That's just not me.

I'm also not the type that enjoys a train wreck, or has the energy to be petty...and IMO that's what you all are being.

I've tried to log in over there...my password doesn't work. I'm not going to take the time to fix it

I think TOB will go it's way, and we'll build our own community here.

That's why this place is here,to maintain the sense of belonging.

I'm really tired of the negativity, and hope you all will stop bragging about your exploits.

The antics will not stop the owners of TOB from making money...keep that in mind.

The first joke in the "DMF joke thread" has these little pearls of wisdom.

* It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge.

* You cannot unsay a cruel word.

* Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

* Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back,
you'll enjoy it a second time.

* Don't interfere with somethin' that ain't botherin' you none.

I really see this board and the other one as separate and different. I have my preference, but it's not worth the time or energy to invest in running down the other one.

I'm done with it.  [thumbsup]
They apparently perma-banned me for my very tactful tar. No warning or explanation. That ended it for me.

I heartily agree it is time to for the club to move forward in its new home.

However, I would ask that folks show a little patience. It's only been a couple days depending on when you found out, found here, etc. People handle things in different ways. Letting folks get it out of their systems was/is a good idea.

Also, it is worth it to note that for the vast majority, no one was being overtly obnoxious until VS started censoring all links from posts AND pms. For those trying to regroup this caused some very real and justified anger. Letting that simmer down, instead of getting on a high horse was a good course.

It is just the Internet, but it was an important place to many. Everyone should dole out a little forgiveness regarding hot headed actions in the wake of the collapse.

Holding that everyone should meet the same standards/ideal you try to is a recipe for "disappointment". Especially on the Internet.

Now is the time to start adding useful content to this forum.  The best way to attract new members is by having something worth reading.

I expect it to take a few more weeks for the Tech section to have enough in it to be worth searching, but we have a good start.

I've finally moved on.

you are right, and that's why we're talking about it.

It's a big ship, and takes a while to change directions.  We're just turning the wheel now so it'll come around at some point.   Think of it more as raising a toast with suggestions for fun, not scolding people at the table.

I'm off to go mix some more afternoon metaphores.   [beer]

I'm not sour towards TOB at all. It just doesn't feel right to me anymore.

Thankfully this was started and I've found myself a new home. Beats walking the streets looking thru trash.  ;D

I don't think anyone is being petty. I think saying that and not including yourself is a bit high horse-ish.  I havent said anything about TOB, but I think its natural that people react the way they do when a place they've been to for years and years all of a sudden goes into the crapper.

In a short time people will stop talking about it naturally. I don't think there is any need to force the issue.

VS has locked down the old DML.  You can't really do much at this point anyway.

The only way to hurt them, if one were so inclined, would be to contact all the vendors, whose ads are flashing all over the site, and let them know that everyone has left and VS is keeping a bunch of bogus accounts open to boost their numbers.  Also let them know that we find the advertising on all VS sites to be offensive.  Tell them the majority of the users on VS sites are either running ad blocker or boycotting the vendors who advertise because of the manner in which the advertising is conducted.  I mean VS even acknowledges the fact that the ads are horrendous and offers to turn some of them off if you pay them.

AFAIC..the only thing that's changed is the web address.

The DMF looks like home..

feels like home..

everyone has found their way here..

It must be home! [thumbsup]

I think the big crash a few years back took longer to fix than it took for the switch to the DMF.

Fairly simple transition.

Nice work guys!

QuoteHeck, artistic, creative, sardonic, juvenile, silly, humorous people is what made me find an online home

I got a "point" for being that way and they took away my "premimum" status.  I guess with a point, I could only be a senior member.  I liked the way the forum was and the way this one is.  I have never been censored especially for being heck, artistic, creative, sardonic, juvenile, silly or humorous on a forum.

It's admirable, I guess, that some of you are so easy to forgive and forget.  But in my book they will always be the asshole canucks that whored the DML for their own greed and deserve no respect, or if it comes to it, mercy.

I'm just glad to be with the same community, even if it is a new home. Far from being negative, I think it's a positive move that will also give us all a new start to shape this forum the way we want it to be.

The only thing I was annoyed about during the VS transition is losing about 85 private messages that I hadn't backed up - they deleted them!!! Some of these had pictures and other useful info. I wasn't too happy about that but there isn't much that I can do about it.

I still log in sometimes to take a peek.. it's gone down the toilet basically. The NMC has been all but deleted back to december 2007.

Sad.

If it makes you feel any better we are not the first ones to lose a vibrant community and years of collected knowledge. It doesn't take much searching to find evidence.

Check out this discussion. Does the experience of one poster sound familiar?

I'm just sad at what was lost. I guess nothing stays the same forever.

I like to look on the bright side, at first I was surprised that what i believed to be a legitimate comment was censored but then I saw it as an opportunity to blow off some steam. It's a positive thing.
I don't think I stepped on anyone's toes but the mods/owners at the new DML. They seemed to take it all very personally, it just made it more fun to bait them.
It will all be forgotten soon and when the dust settles there be another place to chat and swop thoughts on our favorite bike, what could be better than that?

Just had a little chuckle, was the DML around in 69? i know it's a magic number and all and Howie/ducpainter would have been middle aged by then but........WTF! And only 1 person was on line! That's gotta be a record.  [laugh] [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]
