I've got some friends who's s.o.'s ride, friends who want rides, etc.... and it made me think that perhaps a two-up-friendly group ride is in order. I'm guessing that there might be some folks who know others who have been asking for a ride. Maybe this is your chance to ask that girl at work... or guy? :P
You don't have to have a passenger lined up for this ride, but it would be spiffy if you'd be open to taking one or being one. I won't force two guys to ride together if y'all are that homophobic, but ya might be asked to ride on back with a gal... Yeah, that's right...a GIRL. :o So pick your poison. :-*
Safety stuff: OK, in case you don't get it, this isn't a "balls out" type of ride unless your passenger is down wit' it, and even then I'd suggest that you try to do most of the thinking above the belt--this goes for the chicks, too. Crashing your own sorry butt is one thing--taking someone down with you is beyond uncool and it's twice the slippery blood and guts for the rest of us to ride through. Get your bike in shape suspension-wise for taking two people, too. I'd like to emphasize riding "The Pace." http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/flashback/122_0911_the_pace_nick_ienatsch/index.html (http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/flashback/122_0911_the_pace_nick_ienatsch/index.html) For those of you who want the Cliff Notes it means that you ride within your limits, your lane and the speed limit for the most part. Wick it up in the corners, but keep it reasonable in the straights. We do this to allow folks to catch up and to avoid tickets. And PLEASE try to get your passengers geared up for safety and warmth as best you can. I have an extra Aerostich that I can lend out, gloves, and a few other armor odds and ends.

Been awhile since I've had a passenger on a fun road, if the Brutales back, I'm in!
'Belle, you'll have to prewarn any passengers though. Think your keister's the only one small enough to fit on that seat. [laugh]
Good Idea! BikerGoddess has something going on that day, but let me check with her.
Also, keep in mind that Marin County roads are less likely to have debris on them this time of year than peninsula roads.

Sure, but who's "the Groupie"? The English lass from Zeitgeist?

I was going to wait on this, but I'll put it up here now to get a dialogue going about the best way to ride two-up.
OK, so I'm not a suspension expert, but my understanding is that you need to increase your pre-load. On my bike that's a real pain. It involves a large screwdriver and a mallet. As Enzo's brother would say, it's probably a four-goddammit job for me. (The number of times I'll say that while I'm trying to do it. ;D) So when I take m'boy on back I usually get lazy and simply add about three clicks to the Ohlins that I have on the rear. I think the Ohlins only controls the rebound--someone correct me on that if I'm wrong. Anyhoosiers, the end result is that I get a bike that's a lot stiffer and it works for both me and my guy. Trust me, riding around on a mushy back end can make things really interesting. And I know quite a bit about mushy back ends both on and off the bike. ;D The point is, if it works for me and someone who's 163% heavier than me, chances are that it might work for you. If anyone is planning on doing a "sporting pace" I'd suggest that you make the "proper" adjustments and not half-ass it like moi.

Hi MM! She's ridden on a Greyduc's Monster as well as Petemg's S2R so she's quite familiar with sitting on a Monster if that will be your ride of choice ;D
To add to this,
It's also doubly important to check the basics tire pressure, chain tension, brake function, etc etc.
Having a tire a couple pounds under ideal, or a sloppy chain becomes way more apparent with an extra body on the bike. [thumbsup]

Updates made to first page.
Can someone vouch for the "normal loop" being in decent shape for the upcoming ride? MM posted up that Tam was nasty...just wondering if we should change routes.
Btw, I'm thinking of a meet time at Tam 'Bux at 9:30 with a departure of 10:00 or so. I have friends coming on this ride that have no interest in the usual pre-dawn meet times we generally do. [cheeky] It will give the roads a chance to warm up, too. We could probably stop at Nicasio Cheese place or the Mexican joint for lunch if folks are interested before heading our separate ways.

MM mentioned that Panoramic was in bad shape, but we could easily avoid that by hitting the coast. Panoramic isn't that fun 2-up anyway...

Agreed. The coast is the way to go.
MB--
The clicker that is easily accessible (on your reservoir) is your compression damping. Yes, adding a few clicks to that can help a bit when carrying extra weight. I wouldn't worry about muddling around with rebound damping. If you want to add preload, on your shock, you de-couple the two lock nuts (loosen the top one) then torque down the lower one, then tighten the top one back down to lock things in place. I don't have any rough rules of thumb, but I'd guess ~2 turns would make a positive difference.
BTW: I'm in with a cupcake, and I'll sweep. I will be going slow and want no one behind me to see how slowly I'll be going. :)

Well, an open spot awaits for some lucky person. Jackie's in NYC then, so I can't even twist her arm.
All right sports fans... first post updated. We're getting quite a crowd. [clap] If we go a slow enough pace I don't mind having everyone together. Otherwise it's probably better that we split up into a couple of groups.
Doesn't appear that anyone is hoppin' to get on the back of my bike, so I can lead a (faster) group. If someone else wants to step up to the plate, then that's fine, too. I can be someone's pillion also. It can be a game-time decision. I'm going to volunteer my guy to be a sweep if no one else will do it. So I'm still short a sweep and a leader. I'm going to bring a handful of straws and we'll draw them the day of, suckas.
CharliesAngel - do you still have your unamed-yet-willing passenger lined up? She's on the list, but it might be cool to have a little more info on her, like, if she's actually planning on coming, what her experience with bikes is, what kind of gear she has, etc. We can match her up with the appropriate pilot after that and get her some apparel and what-not if she needs it.
I'm happy to lead or sweep as needed.

I just shot her an email reminding her that her response is of the essence here - she REALLY wants to go on this ride - but may have to do some Grace Cathedral thingy with the family... will advise asap! I have an armored jacket, helmet that she can borrow. She has her own leather pants (they aren't armored though) and regular boots. I am kinda hoping that I can borrow Petemg's extra set of Ladies armored gloves (will ask him when he gets back into town). I think that she rode a bike when she was in the Peace Corps in Thailand... will report more on that as wll if she ends up joining us! Thanks again!

How's about the SF group meets at 8:30 in front of Zeitgeist?
With Joe in, I'm guessing Anne will be going with him, so I'm still passenger free.
Incidentally, I'll be trying out a new bike (R1200GS-yes, it's huge), so if anyone wants a pillion to have an actual comfy ride, that would be the bike to get on.

Okie dokie...so, until I hear otherwise I've paired you up with CharliesAngel's friend. I'm assuming riding on the back of a Monster with a stranger for hours might turn her off of bikes for good--and although you might turn her off of men for good we're going to take that chance for her bootie's comfort. ;D
I'm going to plan on hopping on the back of someone's bike at this point. It appears that we have more pilots than passengers. I might be able to wrangle up another girl. She's got some experience riding and weighs about 110 lbs. She likes to sleep in though so 9:30 might be a bit too early in the day for her... :P

I might hop around to a few different bikes if people want a passenger. Those of you going solo right now know how much I weigh, so put a bunch of extra air in the tires and crank up yer pre-load. [cheeky]

I think my sidecases weigh more'n you.
I haven't heard from my friend, the mysterious cupcake...so I'm removing her from the list and she's lost out on a fantastic ride... too bad for her (*&^%$#, I hate flakey people!) >:(
First post updated with flaky, mysterious passenger elminated, Spidey out and me listed as a roving butt to fill empty passenger seats.
Suspension update: √ check, Dave Moss benediction

I have a pair of Dainese insulated waterproof gloves, size M (that particular glove style runs kinds of small).

Can a solo rider join?
Not a ton of cupcake experience so would prefer to fly single.
If there is room, I'm in.
Thx

You're totally welcome to ride on your own. Don't know if you mean that you don't feel comfortable
taking a passenger or if you don't feel comfortable
being a passenger, but you're welcome to ride on the back of my bike if you want. I'm sure one of the guys would take you, too.
I'll donate 5 small DucatiMOB shirts for the cupcakes that brave this event.
For reason my wrist just heal I might go solo if the goup will not mind and I never be a passenger on the bike before :-\
No problem. Although you might consider not riding if your wrist is still hurting you... :)

That was a fun ride. I wasn't expecting to make it this morning, as I was supposed to be out of town and didn't have a bike. I managed to get back to CA earlier than expected and datv graciously lent me his monster. I arrived late at Zeitgeist to find the group still waiting and a lone passenger/straggler whose rider bailed on her. Marcela--the passenger--jumped on the back after we got her some gear at DesmoQ's and off we went. Woohoo!
Good riding. MM, you can make that scooter move. [moto] Eric and dude on yellow 1098 (forgot your name-sorry), hope you'll forgive me taking off toward the end of Hwy 1. The little head started talkin' when I saw the racetrack, and I'd just found out my new passenger liked the speedy bits. <grin>. Evan, you should come with us on our short high speed run. Marcela, if you end up reading this, I hope ya had a good time. You're a great first time passenger. [thumbsup]
Thanks for organizing, belle. I like the 2-up ride. [moto]
Good times [thumbsup] I haven't had a passenger on such twisty roads like that! My cupcake said it felt like a roller coaster [laugh]
Thanks everyone for coming out and for Mostrobelle organizing [clap]
I think our very first two-up ride went pretty well. Fantastic turn out. Very cool day. I haven't done a prettier ride than the one we had today. Or maybe it's just that I'm not normally in a position (literally) to enjoy it. [cheeky]
[clap] to Enzo and MichaelMoore for leading our groups today. Another round for DanTheMan and Tigre/Jammen/CharliesAngel for sweeping.
Michael I owe you a beer for totin' me around all day. I've never done a ride like that on a scooter. [laugh] I was telling someone in our group about passing cars on the inside corners of 1, two up, on a scooter and some cyclist over heard me and starting chuckling. Fun times. Can't wait to see the video. Perhaps I can take you on the back of my Monster at some point to return the favor. [evil]

What's funny is that it didn't feel like we were doing anything crazy or going all that fast. --A testament to MM's skills. That or I was still drunk from last night. It's really a 50/50 on that one. [laugh]
You were movin' at a pretty damn good clip for two up, 'specially on the tight stuff at the beginning of PCH. A motorcycle can feel pretty heavy in the tight turns, but that scooter just zips through 'em.
I think I'm in some of the vids. In fact, I know I am. I rode up MM's ass a coupla times just so he could get a close-up. ;D

I wasn't sure what that was going to be like riding +100 miles 2 up on a superbike. It wasn't bad at all actually. That was a first for me. We took it easy and then ended the day in a parking lot practicing stoppies with DQ. As if that would be a surprise. [cheeky]

Tom = Salamanga7? I forget.
Desmostro's passenger's name was Lauren. (not on the board...)

I believe Ducnymph's passenger was Tiffany. (not on the board...)
That's all I got.
Cool video, looks like fun. [thumbsup]
The yellow 1098 was Jacombi(?), who was really nice. ;)

Mostrobelle: Thank you for organizing an awesome ride - really fun, organized, and good choice on the lunch venue!
Everyone: Great seeing familiar and meeting new faces!
I'm still amazed that a) Jammen let me take him as a cupcake and that b) I've FINALLY done it - woohoo! (although we'll forget the fact that I nearly dropped the bike with us on it from stopping on the curved hill...) ;D
Thanks to Spidey for ear plugs , without it my ears will fall off .
Ahhhh Sunday evening, time to reflect on a great weekend.
Thank you to Belle for organizing such a perfect day.
As someone who runs up to Tomales pretty frequently, it was great to do it (finally) as a MOB'ster.
That was a fierce pace at the front after Tomales. :o At least thats what I believe b/c I only saw them for two seconds.
Thank you Spidey for taking my friend Marcella. I would chew her flaked ride out (my friend) but all the great pictures and Micheal's video should be torture enough.
DanThe Man made sure I made it for lunch...thank you for sweeping the first group.
Those of you at Charlie's end of the lunch table heard what was a hilarious story told by Jacoby landing his new PLANE on a Nevada hwy and asking if he could park it in the wide handicap spot at the local B&B. Thats what you get for flying over area 51!
I fear the weather is closing in soon and sunny weekend days will become a rare treat. Thank you for making one of the final Saturdays of 2008 a memorable one.
Thanks everyone again for the great time!
Charlie, you did great with a passenger! Just have to work on not laughing quite so much. [laugh]
That was a great ride! Beautiful weather, good roads and company.
DTM, [thumbsup] for passing out t-shirts to the pillions.
