Title: Noob to Ducati
Post by: mochoajr on November 19, 2008, 06:09:58 PM
Just became a Ducatista(?) It's not a Monster, but did buy a Hypermotard. I've lurked for a while here and finally pulled the trigger. I hope to meet some of y'all.

Any recommendations on insurance? I'm with Progressive, had an '06 Honda Interceptor, paid for, coverage was about $600 per year. They want to charge $1400 for the Hyper.  The Hyper will have a lien on it.

Thanks, Marco

I switched to Foremost with my Hypermotard.  Went from around $1k with progressive down to around $600/yr for the same or better coverage. They even cover rider gear in the event of a crash, which is cool.  You can find their link on the US Ducati site, takes a phonecall, but good to deal with.

Oh yeah, welcome  [thumbsup]  I came from a  monster to the HM, great choice there!

Congrats and welcome.  Check with Progressive also and watch the health coverage because if you already have health at work you should be covered provided you are wearing a helmet.
Where do you live?

I'm currently with Progressive.  My renewal comes up in December, quote was about $600 for VFR. Changing it to the Hyper made it $1400 per year. The $600 quote took into a account a claim from Oct of 2007.  I could have lived with $900, but $1400!?

I just double checked the Progressive qoute, it is only for one bike. I will check with Foremost.

See if your car insurance company insures bikes.  Might get a multi vehicle discount.  I've played this game with bike insurers, this year Progressive is cheaper, next year Dairyland ha better rates.  Back then Allstate didn't insure bikes, now they do so I have everything with them house, car and bike.

Also, and perhaps more importantly, do NOT party in Slag's pants.

i had FHE with progressive's motorcycle claims department earlier this year after being an idiot and crashing my monster in arkasas.  i can say most certainly that i will not be going back to progressive; it was a very frustrating process, and the adjuster/agent was impossible to get a hold of.  very bad times.  also, i dealt with progressive in 2007 when my car was totaled....also an extremely unsatisfying experience, as they were trying to knock substantial value off my car for a BS scratch on my bumper that was caused by the wrecking crew that transported it to the dallas impound.

everyone i've talked to about dairyland (foremost) has said excellent things about dealing with their claims people, and you get much more coverage for gear and accessories than with companies like progressive (progressive is only $1k, or at least my policy was).  also, you may want to check out the rates with esurance...they should have a decent rate for you.  and they give you like $3k of additional coverage.

Welcome to the forum!  Welcome to the wonderful world of Ducati ownership!  [beer]  We're glad to have you!

I hope you can join us tonight (with or without the bike) over in Fort Worth for dinner.

I'd recommend you call Foremost.  I switched from Geico and Foremost was about 1/2 the price.

and i really dig the HM after riding one around sunday, though it would have been a little more fun had we been able to ride a little more aggressively.  the termis sounded really nice on the one i was riding though.

My .02

1) If you own a home and car, ask your agent what the bundled rate may be to grab further disounts.  For ex: I have Farmers on the house and car, and Foremost is their subsidiary for recreational vehicles.  If you haven't done this before and it is applicable I suggest you look into all the policies b/c you may find that the rates come down on all other assets too and in effect you get a 'freebie.'

2) Take the Uninsured/Underinsured policy!  You may have noticed the "Girlrider Down" thread.  Yes, that'd be me.  I was struck by an uninsured motorist taking illegal left turn into me.  According to the Foremost Investigator, 40% of all Dallas County accidents involve uninsured motorists.  I have premium health care from my employer, but the bills are starting to roll in and if 'not but for' the uninsured policy I carried, the latest Dallas Fire Dept tab of $890 for the ride to Parkland would be on my dime.

In effect, if you have assets and want to protect them - go seriously cover your keester by shelling out a few hundred more per year.  Hopefully you won't need it, but you'll be damn glad if you do.   :-*

I'm shopping around and so far Foremost is the cheapest.

I did read about your incident and hope you are well.  I can't stand the undinsured/underinsured motorists, how 'bout random insurance checks?  What the dollar cost must be from that group drivers is totally unfair to people paying their premiums to be protected.  Driving/riding a vehicle is a privilege, not a right....sorry for the rant.  I do take the uninsured/underinsured policy.
