Title: I've got Beer and Doughnuts.
Post by: Sump on November 20, 2008, 05:08:09 PM
Yeah, I read the sticky about Intros, so here are the doughnuts and beer for those so inclined.

First up: I'm a proud new Monster owner. 696+. One week old today. I'm still in the riding-in phase (natch), but I'm blown away by how nimble and responsive this bike is. It's not my first bike, but it is my first Ducati.

I'm from Down Under, so I can ride all year round. I suspect I will be doing that on the Monster.

Anyway, I've been lurking for a wee while on this forum and decided to take the plunge. G'day all.

Oh, and I've been very surprise (and a tad embarrassed) at the attention the Duc gets when it's parked. Is this normal?

Welcome to the fold!

A Ducati drawing attention when its parked? Surely you jest.   ;)

As for the beer and donuts...

Yeah, have to get used to that. Funny, mine gets less attention since I've started modding it, but doesn't bother me.
BTW, +1 on bike pics.

;D OK. OK.

Nothing to excite all you maniac modders here. It's a standard M696+. It's about 150 km old in the photo. Just got it home from the dealer. (I had to get red because I really like the trellis frame showing out, which it doesn't on the pearl white and black.  And, yeah, in my brain, Ducatis are red.)

The arm & glove are mine. I was still at the stage of needing to touch it to make sure I really had just bought a brand new Ducati.  [roll]
(Actually, I still am in that phase. )

Hi there Sump.

Nice bike you have there. Where about's down under are you? We have an active group at OZ monsters in dire need more female input as it's very male dominated.

Know what you mean about owning a Ducati.  I used to go out to the shed just to look at mine.  And yes Ducatis get lots of attention, especially ones ridden by women.

I'm trying to scam a test ride on the 696 next time I go to the dealers.  I was having a discussion on the weekend with some other members about how much wind you'd feel riding the 696 at highway speed given that the fairing (if you can call it that) has gotten smaller with the new models.  Any comments on that?  Saw that you'd been on the sprocket thread too.  Can recommend 14t sprocket to make it easier to ride round town.  But I'm on a 2005 1000S.  Maybe Ducati have done some improvements with your model. Will know after a test ride.

Hope you see you on the Oz Monsters pages soon.
Cheers
Heather

Thanks for the welcomes, all. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is totally geeked by owning a Ducati.  ;D

Hi Heather. I'm from the other side of the ditch. But if you don't mind a Kiwi having a wee peek, I'll check out the Oz monsters--and hope the whiff of testosterone doesn't knock me over.  ;)

Yeah, the fly screen is pretty darned teeny. Since I'm still in the riding in stage, I have been a good wee girl and not really opened up the bike, so my experience on highway speeds is limited to the range 100 - 120 kph. I can't say I've really felt the air pressure unduly. In fact, a couple of days ago, I was riding a cruiser-style bike (with a cafe fairing) I did notice how strong the wind felt on my upper torso: much more so than the 696. I haven't had the feeling of clinging to the handlebars to stop myself being buffeted off the seat.  Mind you, I'm a shorty, which may be a factor too: not a lot of me sticking up over the tank for the wind to get at. ;)

1000S, eh? Cool. I think you'll find the 696 is a smaller, lighter, more compact machine. Good luck getting a test ride.  [thumbsup]

Hi Sump

Feel free to drop in any time.  Just be prepared for a bit of ribbing if they find out where you're from. They are very good at interstate slanging off. Can only imagine what they would say about someone from the other side of the ditch.

Is there an NZ Monster group on here? It would be good to have some contacts in NZ.  Haven't been yet but would love to go for a ride/walk/look there.

Thanks for the bike info.  I'm a bit challenged in the leg department too, that's why I'm interested in the smaller bike as the 1000s can be difficult to park sometimes but I do lots of country miles so not sure if I would wear out a 696.  That's the reason why I moved up to the 1000S.

Although I'm sure I would have plenty of fun on the 696 just as I'm sure you are having with it. Would be nice to be rich enough to have both in the shed I think.
