Title: Removing Starter wire
Post by: lemond on November 23, 2008, 01:08:48 PM
do I use a thinner wrench? The starter wire is bolted down by two 10mm nut but I can't seem to get my wrench into the nut closest to the starter. I remember reading somewhere that I should not have the starter bolt turn more than 1/4 of a turn or risking stripping the wires inside the starter.

Just remove #1 and wire is off.
Don`t touch #2 if not necessary, isolation washer easily cracks and starter shorts.

Try to not let the wire turn as you are loosening the nut, this will reduce the chance of breaking the plastic insulator.

hmmm, it looks like the nut is seized to the bolt, the wire does turn with the nut and the bolt. Ah this sucks i hate getting seized nut/bolt...time to whip out PB blasters and hope for the best.

That's what I would recommend...

I run across those all the time, actually. Like said above, I will slowly but forcefully loosen the nut, watching the post turn with it a bit. All the while, I'm hoping nothing important breaks up inside the starter. I've done it a bunch of times and haven't hurt a starter yet. (fingers stay crossed)
