Ok so over the winter months I will be bored and this is on my list of things to do...
I have read that there are a few ways of dealing with this problem.
1. the bypass kit
2. the radio shack method utilizing some sort of resistor
3. bare bones way of just clipping the wire and closing the loop.
After reading all the posts I could find, I would like to go with #3. I really dont care about the issue of starting in gear or riding away with the kickstand down. And I really hate wires that just clutter up the bike. It seems with number three I will be able to eliminate one wire harness clip and the big long wire running down my frame and engine and hooking up to my kickstand. The problem comes in with my fear of messing with electrical wiring. I am handy and have always gotten it right when doing electrical work but for some reason it is just intimidating. I want to be sure I am going about it properly and have the proper tools on hand and proper instructions on how to do it before I start cutting.
Can anyone tell me exactly, step by step, from experience, the way to go about cutting out the kickstand kill switch?
The current set up has three wires (black, green, white and green) running up from the kickstand to a big black clip that plugs into another clip that has two wires running from it. I can supply pics if it would help. Possibly complicating matters... It looks as though the previous owner did some sloppy clipping and splicing himself as there are some wires with electrical tape around them about an inch away from the side where the two wires come out.
Thanks in advance for any help on this.
also, I have a 2001 900 as this may make a difference in the process
You just need to jump the two wires at the connector that the sidestand switch plugs into. If you want, you could cut the harness short to neaten things up, but I would just leave it in case you want the system to function in the future.
+1 to what Howie's sayin.
One easy way to do it:
Go to Radio Shack and get some black 18 gauge wire and some electrical tape.
Cut a few inch piece of the black wire and then strip off the ends.
Stick each end into the female side of the plug in the harness on the bike side (this is usually on the left side of the frame just above the kickstand). You'll know it's right cause the other end goes to the sensor at the pivot of the kickstand) <-- this is now no longer needed
Test
Tape it down solid.
