Title: exhaust gasket missing?- QuatD mid pipe header to horiz. cyl. connection.
Post by: J.P. on December 01, 2008, 03:11:23 PM
Seems like it should have some kind of gasket - plate type?
Quat D mid-Pipe just ends w/ no flange. Can you get somthing to cushion the fit? "sounds" like there's a leak(clicking) but I can't see/feel anything.
Thanks- JP

You need a gasket at the head interface for all systems. Look up in there with a flashlight, they sometimes get smashed into place and don't come out easily.

If you don't feel any kind of hot air leak I'd think you'll be fine.  From what the local tech tells me the gaskets Ducati uses don't even seem to seal well when they're brand new.  Obviously no exhaust leak would be optimal (especially that close to the header) but if you give the engine some rpms and you still don't feel anything, I'm willing to bet you'll be fine.  Ahhhh, yet another case of a mystery noise.  Good luck.

I just installed one of those on my S2R1K and there was no gasket for me either.  The quat-D pipe was a bear to get aligned and seat properly, and I definitely had a leak when I was done.  I took it all apart, lathered it up with copper permatex and let it sit for a few hours.  After that, I don't get any ticking from the exhaust port anymore.

sure seems like a fiber donut or something would be a better fix, though.

The steel/fiber donut is the stuff I ordered directly from Ducati that works marginally well at best.  I had to fit the gaskets (both headers) along with some liquid gasket on loan from my shop to get it to seal up right.  Long story short: get some liquid gasket, get some permatex, even get an old Harley gasket ($5 bucks, which I found out AFTER spending 25 on the pair from Italy...) and seal up whatever it doesn't.  It's not an exact science.  Just start stuffing shit in there  ;D

I've always had good luck with the stock gasket, it's the squareness of the interface that seems to often be the problem. When you pull the exhaust off, look for a sooty section at the gasket junction. If it looks to be partly sooty and partly shiney, grind down the shiney part and refit.

Sounds cool- will start looking for somthing flat to stuff in there, but no problems so far.
Hey Mash- what the hell is that white cloth for?

That's a good idea.  Not sure why I didn't think of it.  I may remove my pipe and do a little grinding on it to get it to fit better.

Do you happen to remember which harley gasket was similar?

Not exactly.  The shop I try to buy from isn't my Ducati shop but the owner works on anything you can throw at him (his daily rider is a BMW sport tourer and he's working on a souped up 900ie), even though most of the business they get is Harleys and other cruisers.  I was talking to the manager the day I went in to see if they could retro fit something for me (as opposed to buying from duc) and he went on about how they used to take a simple, V-shaped gasket, cut it once, then carefully fit the gasket on whatever exhaust and seal the rest up with liquigasket.

The gaskets he showed me looked much more substantial than the stockers (mine wore out at about 13k miles).  Long story short, go find a cheap set that looks around the same size as yours, cut it up,and do what you can.  It doesn't work.....you're out 6 bucks and you go get the real ones (for twenty freaking five).
