Title: Re-rainproofing gear?
Post by: erkishhorde on December 01, 2008, 08:01:27 PM
So, on turkey day I found out that my waterproof textile MotoGP jacket is no longer waterproof.  [roll] Has anyone successfully re-waterproofed a jacket or am I just due for a new one?

Well I'm not sure if this will work on textile or not.. REI sells these "soaps" you put in your wash along with the jacket. It reapplies a water resistant coating back onto the clothing article. I had to re-treat my ski jacket and it worked just fine and has been holding up for two ski seasons.

I don't like using the wash in waterproofer because I find it hinders the materials breathablity.  YMMV

I now use this spray on stuff from NIKWAX (http://www.nikwax.com/en-us/products/productdetail.php?productid=265&activityid=1&itemid=1&fabricid=-1).

Works great!  [thumbsup]

You can find in most sporting goods stores.  EMS, LL Bean, REI, etc.

There are lots of different spray on waterproofing solutions to choose from.  The one Diva listed is pretty good if i recall (been about 10 years) but I've used a handful of others with some luck.  I agree with the laundry soap version.  It just adds too much solution to your gear and basically turns it into a big vinyl raincoat (i.e.- no breathability).  2-3 light coats are the key, just don't overdue it.

Kiwi (the shoe polish people) make a spray also. I used it on some textile pants and it worked fine. I believe it's a silicone based spray. I used it on my timberland pros also. It's ok on leather, just spot test it in case of a reaction to leather dyes.

Oh, I forgot to ask, how long do your water proof jackets stay water proof when you first buy them? I can't remember if I've been running my current jacket for 2 years or 1. I'm pretty sure that it hasn't been more than 2 though.

Mine never really did.  I got back from a particularly wet ride once and my arms and upper shoulder area was pretty soaked.  Everything in my pockets was bone dry because of the way the pockets were designed, but I was disappointed overall.  I have a Teknic jacket which from the looks of it is supposed to be the Humvee of their jacket line.  CE padding and good fit for crash protection, plenty of pockets and funcitonality, good cold weather insulation, and good "all weather protection".  There is a kind of plastic lining throughout most of the jacket that I think is suposed to be the dry layer, but it obviously doesn't do any good.  When it warms up I'll probably give her a coat or two and head out in the rain to see how it goes.
