Title: Some maintenance tips
Post by: davejenknz on December 13, 2008, 01:58:04 AM
I'm doing a 40000kms service on my S4.
Well it's actually turned into a strip fest.   :-*
I've dismantled the bike down to the bare engine. Even taken the wiring harness off (for cleaning and inspection).
Any way I've two tips to offer fellow ducatista [thumbsup]

First: Who needs a special wrench to torque the head bolts?  ???
I use a standard 15mm ring/open ender. The open end part of this wrench is 2mm wider than a 1/2" drive. For low torque settings (<20nm) the fit is good enough. Above 20nm you'll need to pack out the 1/2" drive with a sleeve made of 1mm non-deforming material.
You need a formula to calculate the torque setting on your wrench:
C = D( A/( A+B))

C = Wench setting
D =  Desired Torque
A = Length of  Torque Wrench (center of drive to end of wrench body, excluding adjuster)
B = length of adapter (between centers of open end and ring)

So my 15mm open end/ring spanner is 20.5mm between centers, The wrench is 43.5mm long.
For the 3rd stage torque of the head bolts I require 40nm: plugging in the values gives C = 40*(43.5/(43.5+20.5)) which gives 27.2 nm.

Second (4valve only): Belt Fitment: Who needs a special tool to rotate the vertical intake cam.  ???
Just use a power bar or T bar with a 5mm hex socket inserted in one of the cam wheel bolts to rotate the cam to the required position.

I do all maintenance on the S4 and have bought only a few 'special' tools:
A Ducati 7 sided filter spanner.
A steering head spanner http://www.desmotimes.com/ (http://www.desmotimes.com/)

I do get my local Duc workshop to do things that I can't like pull and fit wheel bearings. And I did get them to remove the lower steering head race.
Otherwise I use a very basic set of metrics sockets, hex sockets, spanners etc.
