Title: Alternator Cover Puller Tool needed
Post by: Vino900 on December 14, 2008, 06:25:36 AM
Does anyone have an Alternator Cover Puller Tool I can borrow/rent?
I have to remove the left cover to fit my new flywheel.

You and me both! New flywheel is just one of the many things sitting here waiting for me to do. If I come up with something, I'll let you know. [beer]

OK.  If all fails we can buy the splitter tool on eBay for $50.
I got a set of very nice 5-spoke Marchesini rims that will be fitted with new 208GP DOT tires (MNSBR).  Hope the 180 rear will clear the chain.  Woodcraft rearsets are mounted and header pipe is ceramic coated black.  Also will add Paulimoto clutch pressure plate and spider .

I think a cheapo steering wheel puller from any auto parts store will work.

I made a puller out of a chunk of aluminum... that works too.

Yeah,
Got the household moved in May or so, but didn't didn't complete the process of finding, moving and retooling  the new shop until late Oct.

The new house is tiny but the garage is quite large for an in-town city lot. About 2.5 car and extra deep. According to the neighbors the guy that put it up (definitely not a carpenter [bang]) built dragsters . It's functional at this point but next summer it will either have the roof torn off and receive proper trusses or the whole shebang will go in the dumpster and I'll do it right. It's kind stuffed full of dirt bikes at the moment.  [moto]

Did a fair amount of dirt riding this summer and kinda ignored 'ole Whitey. I did only one oil change and didn't even go through a set of tires. I might even sell Whitey in the spring. We'll see...

Anyone need an awesome (and cheap) '03 GasGas DE 250? Would be a great ice bike. Also one of the best handling enduro machines around. (careful with the throttle [thumbsup])  Ohlins rear, WP USD front, both have been worked over by Factory Connection. All it really need is fork seals. It runs great but I can only ride one at a time.

I found a generic puller in my tool box.  Harmonic balancer puller for a Chevy (I know I have not used it for at least 15 years).
Fasterblkduc if you need to use it let me know.

So I got the left cover off easily.  Now the next challenge is to locate a 30mm Deep Impact Socket.  Struck out at Sears and Northern.  Does anyone have one?
Also looking for the special Ducati flywheel holder tool or I have to come up with  a different method for holding the flywheel while torquing it to spec.

I have a 30mm socket you can borrow. I think if I remember correctly I got it at Welle auto on up Central. It's a "common" size for some kinda auto brake work I believe. It was like 7 bucks....

I'm in St. PAul south of Macalester

Jam a penny in the gears to hold the flywheel while torquing. Works fine.

I thought the guy at Welle said it was a common something on a car :P

I try to stay away from working on those contraptions.  [bang]

30mm = 1.181"

1.188" = 1-3/16"  so a 1-3/16" socket would also work, only .007 too big which is probably closer than the mfg. tolerance on a socket that big...

I picked up a 30mm socket at NAPA.  Thanks for the penny tip.  I will use it this weekend if I can find the time between kids sports and wife's home projects.

Desmoelmer thanks for the penny tip.  It worked great while torquing to 140 Ft-lb.
I had to pick up a set of impact sockets as the new lighter flywheel used 2 separate nuts (36 &38mm) instead of the original split 30mm.
I will report back on feel of light flywheel after I get the bike out in the spring.
