Title: Runnin' OK?
Post by: cgos4r on January 03, 2009, 07:45:13 AM
Ok, I need to read my plugs, but until I have some time to do so, whatcha think? The bike runs good, does not backfire, does not pop on decel, and the temp stays at about 150 - 160 when moving. It goes up to like 224 when idling in traffic though. The exhaust pipes are pretty black and a little sooty, so that tells me it may be a bit rich. I'm not too concerned about it being rich, but lean I don't want to mess with.

The bike has a PCIII and a full Remus with a factory airbox configuration. I didn't do the map and I don't know anything about it as it was on the bike when I bought it.

Reading plugs is both a science and an art from a bygone era, and is restricted to operation at full throttle.
If you are worried about your mixture, a few dyno runs will provide the information

You could hook up to the PCIII and save your existing map, then try tweaking it and uploading that new map.

Or just take it in for a dyno-tune.
That map may well just be one of the canned maps, and therefore not optimum.

What's your fuel mileage like?

Not that great actually. I think 120 miles to a tank.

I'm taking it in for a dyno pull next weekend to establish a baseline. I'll post up the results if anyone is curious. I've got a full Remus exhaust and the PCIII.

That's not bad mileage for an S4R.

Definitely post up your results.

Remember that when a power run is done on the dyno you are only checking full throttle mapping, a single full power run may not tell if the bike is rich or lean at part throttle. have them run the throttle through the range to check this while warming the bike up for you power run.

Good point Ducvet, I appreciate the advice!

The place I'm taking to is an official Power Commander tuning facility. The main goal of the dyno run will be to check the air/fuel ratio. They will design a custom map if necessary.
