Some of you may remember my red rim tape on the 620. Well, about a week or so before Christmas - while I was hiding in my garage from my mother-in-law - I decided it would be cool to have rim tape on the SBK. So, using my handy-dandy rear stand, the back wheel tape goes on with no issues. Looks good.
No, make that, Looks freakin' AWESOME! Even cooler than Svoloch's Xerox bike!
Then I used a borrowed front stand to begin work on the front rim when, low and behold, I'm discovered by the M-i-L.
Busted. Have to break it off for the night so I can slink back out in the morning and finish the job - in peace, go@da%^it! (Live to fight another day and all that $hit...)
Well somehow during the night, the bike mysteriously falls off the front stand:
My mother-in-law disavowed any knowledge of the attack going so far as to claim she was sleeping ... Nope, didn't even get up to pee, she said.
Now notice, in this picture, the nifty, kick-ass, red rim tape:
Also notice no rear stand anywhere in sight... Yes, that's right, I had the bike up on the front stand WITHOUT it also being on a rear stand... Do NOT attempt this at home, kiddies; the consequences will be many and far-reaching [cheeky]
When the bike landed, the swing arm appears to have hit first taking a chunk of concrete out of the garage floor the size of a quarter. The two-piece yellow bodywork behind the seat was crushed, along with the brake light/turn signal housing, left mirror, left clip-on, GP shift lever, and left brake rotor (must have caught the front stand on the way down). Incredibly, there wasn't a single scratch on the side fairing :o The metal framework under the mirror was also bent but was soft enough to be coaxed and cursed back into shape.
So far, I've been able to replace all of the damaged parts with "pre-owned" pieces off EBay. I'll prolly spring for some new Galfer wave rotors (you don't want to know the cost on new OEM rotors) or maybe some EBCs.
All of this - plus the red rim tape - for under a grand! Such a deal [bang] [laugh] Hopefully the thing will be back on the road in time for our next 80-degree January day (sorry LYD, couldn't resist [evil] ).
my heart skipped a beat.............ouch. but the tape looks awesome!
OK, she's withholding evidence. That's my front Pit Bull stand she borrowed and I assumed she knew the rule: can't use a front stand without first having the bike set in a rear stand. Rear first, then the front. Even says so on Pit Bull's printed front stand info. My major bad for assuming she knew that. Well duh, if she didn't have a front stand and needed to borrow one $20 bucks says she didn't know the rule. Anyway, the disaster occurred in my opinion because I never gave her the secret rear/front stand decoder ring info. She's too nice to blame me but I am sure the rest of you won't have that problem! [laugh] [bang] ;D
Lisa the rim tape looks great, nut IMO it should have been yellow, especially on the 999. And yes it is the OLD parts fault!! Just go over to his house and take all the parts you need off his. [laugh] Glad its okay and your MIL probally didn't do it, but just in case better check for finger prints!
So, um Lisa, does the red rim tape look as good when the bike is vertical???
George
Sorry to see that. I've dropped a bike off a stand before and I know the feeling.
cdc
UGH ! That makes me SAD !!!
Sorry :(
~DaVe
Um, Lisa, can I get a view of the other side of the bike before deciding on how the tape looks? [cheeky]
Dang, I can't imagine what it was like to find your bike like that. :o
Sorry about the mishap. Your bike is beautiful. My wife whacked my new Monster S4Rs with her car a few years ago. Her fender hit the handlebar of the Monster when domino action ensued and the Monster fell onto my ST4s. Fortunately, no damage to the Monster and just a minor fiberglass repair on the ST4s. Hs anyone looked into padded garage floors?
damn grrrlll, just.... damn.
Would you care to view my $4k track day?!? :P ;D
Cher,
It's always sickening to see a bike laying on it's side - even if you're not there to witness it going down.
I remember you telling us about this shorly after it happened. Glad to hear that the damage wasn't too extensive nor expensive to fix.
What I'm most concerned about is how close it was to the Corvette! OH MY! I'm going to have to lie down for a while - my heart can't take seeing such a close call!!! [laugh]
Seriously though - sorry to see that happen to your bike, and I give you kudo's for being willing to share your expereince and give others the opportunity to learn from your misfortune. [thumbsup]
[puke] very sorry to read this.... :-\
sorry to see these pics... the front stand doesn't look right to me. As in, the handle is underneath the bike where it should be in front. Conspiracy?
Let us know if you need any help [thumbsup]
At least it did not land on the corvette :-\
Ughhh. The only thing that makes these pictures more palatable is the fact that no one was injured. Can't wait to see the rim tape in it's vertical mode.
I recommend you store your bike in my garage from now on to avoid any further accidents. ;)

+1...did you move it prior to pictures?
sorry to see it, but looks like it's already well on the road to recovery... [thumbsup] i look forward to seeing it in person soon
Hi Lisa,
Did you get the name of the uninsured motorist that ran over your bike? Goodness gracious - that sucks! Hugs to you,
M

Thanks Rich; I'm ordering EBC rotors this afternoon so hopefully by the end of the month it'll be ready to roll - AND stop! As far as the placement of the front stand goes, we're pretty sure that's the way it was. I moved the stand so we could lift it back onto itsside stand but then we decided we'd better take pictures just in case we needed to file an insurance claim (We didn't. Should have though once we factored in the cost of new brake rotors. The left rotor was not obviously damaged until we had to roll the bike out of the way a day later). After discussing it, that is where we remember the front stand being. Very weird for sure because the handle had been facing away from the bike... The plot sickens - or - we've both got crap for brains. [laugh]

It's physically impossible to use the front stand backwards... For the bike to fall, the front wheel had to twist.
I'm really not sure that having the bike on the rear stand would have prevented the crash.
Oh yeah, we definitely had it on the front stand correctly. I had double-checked the Pit Bull website and found a picture: the bike was on their front stand but no rear stand was shown...

At first, we had tried to put the 999 on my rear stand THEN hoist it up on the Pit Bull stand as shown but we couldn't get the front end of the bike to budge; too short a handle, couldn't get enough leverage I guess, so we decided it couldn't possibly work with a rear stand.
Two minutes later, it's up on the front stand and in gear. I was completely speechless the next morning when I saw what had happened - didn't even have an inkling...
I really feel bad for you :(
Oh well; can't cure stupid :D

I was wrong... Randy said the rear stand stabilizes the bike. Never ever use a front stand without the rear. Now we know :P

While using the front stand only is not a recommended way of holding the bike up, it will certainly hold the bike stable for a short while as evidenced by Lisa having it up at least for the while she was working on it. Having the rear stand on makes it more stable and more resistant to slight bumps.
The front stand may look like it was on backward but likely flipped to that final position as the bike fell. No conspiracy there.
Possible reasons why the bike fell:
Strong wind?
large mammal (insert favorite suspect here) bumping into it?
bike slowly rolling forward because of slight incline of garage concrete floor?
Something had to happen because a body at rest remains at rest like a body in motion remains in motion unless its inertia is overcome. So the bike would have remained in an unstable but upright position until tipped over by other forces.

Cover your ears!!!cdc
Ha! Y'all are too much [laugh] As soon as I decide what kind of rotors to buy (prolly EBC Super-Lites) AND figure out how to get the front wheel off without having another self-inflicted train wreck to ruin my day, I hope to have the bike back out at the end of the month...
Someone suggested that while I may have thought the bike was in gear, it could have been in neutral. Add to that situation, if the frame/motor part of the bike wasn't completely in line with the front wheel, it was never actually stable. We put it up on the front stand that night, then forgot about it until the next day. About eight hours lapsed. No one was in the garage overnight. The dog does not go out there.
Could it have happened that way; kind of off kilter in the first place?
Lisa...PM sent.
Got it. Thanks [thumbsup]
Me too. ;D

Hey Lisa does it suprise you that your car alarm didn't go off(assuming)?
Doesn't surprise Barnee but it does me...
My favorite are the pics on two wheels :P Beautiful bike - glad it's almost ready to ride and hope you never have to go through that again ;)
Thanks Lyndy, I'm just glad it wasn't worse. With the exception of the brake rotors, it was all coesmetic. The car alarm didn't go off; I think I've got it set to auto alarm only if I lock it.
