Title: What would you pay for this beauty?
Post by: muskrat on January 14, 2009, 08:13:46 AM
2000 DUCATI 900SS.THE BIKE HAS AROUND 9000MILES AND IS IN NEAR PERFECT CONDITION (so the add claims).COMES WITH NEW TIRES, K&N AIR FILTER AND GETS 35MPG OR BETTER.ASKING 4500OBO

I saw pics and it looks very nice.  NADA says high retail of $4600 but low around $3500.  Sellers says the 6,000 miles service was done and has all the maintenance records.  Do any of you have insight into known issues with these bikes so I can make an offer?

Thanks.

Is the bike local? Can you go see it? Check with Jason and Rich about those bikes, I have never owned one. Check with Ducdood also, he used to have a Superlight. Any idea who did the maintenance? He's leaving it open with the OBO, bet it could go for $4k.

it's in San Antonio so I'll have to go down there and see.  I'm low-balling at about $3800 and maybe we can meet in the middle.  We'll see.

Paging Jason & Rich for input.

indeed I am.  I'll have to make up some story on how much I paid or the wife-to-be will be pissed.  Actually she'll want to ride it which is a NO NO until she gets more saddle time.  Too much to repair if it falls over.  She is a beauty though, on pictures.  Are you still thinking about this one?  If so, you can ride down with me and we can start a bidding war at $2000  :o

I remember talking to Giannis about the SS models last summer, he mention that there is a chance of the frame developing cracks near the steering tube.  I'm sure he'll toss in some input on the quirks of the SSs.

damn, I'll need an expert eye to come with me then, if I decide to go down.  by the looks of it there are four Duc shops on the way to stop at as well so we can spend all day lollygagging down there.

It is one of the "new" SS's
bonuses: 3-phase alternator, Fuel Injection.
Minuses: Uncomfortable ergonomics. Fugly bodywork. (my opinion)

I will never forgive Terblanche for what he did to a very clasic bike line -he killed it!

Ducati made Supersports just about forever!  (in production since 1974) A very capable and popular bike!

Then his redesign came out.  They did not sell well.  In a few years time it was GONE from the lineup!   :'(

Not so many cracks on the new ones.
The 91-97 bikes could develop them.
I've never had a problem with mine and I abuse it.
Jasons had a couple of 1 3/4" long ones...
Easilly fixable with just a little TIG time (I guess I could say that about most anything  ;D )

Ah thanks for that tidbit of info... I remember him mentioning it, but didn't know if applied to the "newer" SS bikes.

RichD is there to save the day!   [bow_down]

Mine is a '97
Jasons is a '96

1998 has the newer electrical/charging system, older (91-98) bodywork, and still had the carburators (a big plus in my book! If you want to hot-rod the bike it is hard to find a performance ECU for them! )

"New" bodywork came out in 1999

95 - 96 had cracked frame problems and wasnt about abuse just the material  for those two years i guess... mine had the crack and was fixed, all the new SS back then that developed this problem had new frames given from Ducati...  [bow_down]

2000 is a new style, ugly in my opinion but with better suspension from the older base models. i would offer him 4k that's a good price!

with a bit of work you can make it look good...

Looks clean, but there's something special about the classic look of the earlier models IMO.
