Title: Akrapovic - S4Rs
Post by: Carstarphen on January 19, 2009, 06:35:30 AM
Here's the subject of my inquiry:

http://www.akrapovic.com/motorcycle-exhaust/products/ducati/model/monster-s4rs-2006/evolution-6/ (http://www.akrapovic.com/motorcycle-exhaust/products/ducati/model/monster-s4rs-2006/evolution-6/)

I would really appreciate it if knowledgeable persons would educate me on the subject of choosiing and installing a full Akrapovic EVO system on my S4Rs. From CBR1100XX experience, I know that the Akrapovic is a good product, but:

Is it good on an S4Rs?

With respect to the ECU, air box, air filter, mapping, etc., what must be done and what should be done to maximize the benefits of the system?

Assuming that the subjective elements of appearance and sound are equal, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the Akrapovic compared to the Termignoni?  Dolph has already advised me of the warranty consequences, but what about other issues such as ease of installation, for example? Or total cost?

Thank you for your input.

I have no first hand experience with this system but looking it over I would venture a few guesses.

1. it is well built
This is from prior Akropovic exhausts
2. It will work just fine power wise
you will want to get you fuel injection set up after you may be able to trim the ECU if you keep the air box closed.

3. driveability will be the question mark
Termi almost has a monopoly on the ECU's for Ducati's, with out one you will need to try and either live with the o2 sensor or side step it.
There are places to get the ECU re-mapped that may work for you at least after a re-map you could use a power commander.

Ducati almost tries to force you to but a ducati erformance termi kit if you choose do do anything else it can be hit or miss. certainly not a money saver after all is said and done.
good luck

I like the Ak systems  [thumbsup]

If MonsterMash is doing the reflash it will work well.  I remember someone who posted their experience and pics with the single muffler Akrapovics using a DP ECU and the power curve was right up there with what people were getting with the full termis.

The price for the ECU was $1300 I believe.

You can bet Akrapovic opened up the airbox and had a purpose made ECU too or they wouldn't have gotten over 130 HP.

Ducati used to claim up to 13 HP increase on the S4RS with the full Termi kit.  Brad Black's power curve showed between 10 and 14 HP increase over stock for Termis.

Fitted mine with the TI muffler on the weekend, went on pretty easily. It took me a year to decide on what system I wanted and I kept on coming back to the Akra. I like that is reasonable quiet at idle but when you open the throttle it sounds great.

Setup at the moment: standard ECU, airbox & filter, FatDuc, PC with the map for an Arrow full system with standard ECU. Bike is running fine, no hesitation when rolling on the throttle and pickup seems to be quicker. Not planning on getting a custom PC map as I will hopefully be changing it soon.

Waiting for a Nemesis 2 to complete the setup (got screwed by the local distributor and fighting to get my money back so that I can order it from another vendor).

I have opted for the Termignoni full system and have purchased the same today. Ceteris parabis, all things being equal, it seems to be the simplest course of action and requires the least thought and effort. I still think the Akrapovic product is a very good one and their full system for an S4Rs is very nice looking, but I'm uneasy about the implications of the ECU, mapping, etc. The closest good race shop with a dyno is in Austin and that's five or six hours from me. Presumably, any Ducati dealer will be able to install the Termignoni system satisfactorily. Thanks for the responses and input.
