SO I recently acquired some like new parts ... a Palimoto SPYDER clutch spring retainer, and some SS springs and SS bolts. In the process of the install I saw what I believe to be a problem ...
The stock aluminum pressure plate has some "breaks" in the bottom of the spring pockets ! To me it looks as if the porosity of the casting is too high and after it was machined, over time the "corners" broke off ...
I don't think I trust running it anymore and I'm looking to replace it with the Paulimoto Pressure plate (upside is more BLING)
YOUR THOUGHTS ???

(sorry for the small pic, I had nowhere to host the hi-res)
Also I kept track of how the stock plate was marked / indexed ... In what position do I install the aftermarket PP ? Anywhere I want ???
THANKS !!! ~DaVe
nope, they are all like that stock :) Just another "high quality" casting from ducati [laugh]
Oh my ..... that's VERY bad. For security reasons you MUST get a new. If it is bling, that's just a bonus - not the real reason [moto] 8) ;D

WHAT ! Really ? that is very disappointing :(

Drink another one of them cheap beers and don't worry bout it. [thumbsup]
they are all like that. no idea why though.
Aftermarket PP should be marked, but if it's not, it'll only fit on one way when all of the spring pockets line up *and* the teeth on the inside engage with the teeth on the hub.

I just got done installing my new speedymoto plate and it had the same strange gaps as the stock piece did. Just not as sloppy looking. I actually did not even notice them until I pulled the stock part and said "what the hell? this looks broken". I had some ideas of why there were there but it is irrelevant. After market clutch plates look money ;D
I can't remember if it was this board or another? Someone took a factory pressure plate and did some machining / hole drilling and polishing to it. It actually looked better than a vast majority of the aftermarket ones. Anyone have a picture by chance?
I polished my OEM plate with a wire brush attachment on a Dremel. Besides the Dremel being too small for such a large job, it shined up super blingy and came out pretty damn good. It's still an ugly looking part, but it's better shiny and clean than dull and pot metaly.
On most pressure plates there is some sort of marking that lines up with the notched post on the clutch assembly. On mine, some kinda German one, the marking is little more than a divit, but it does the trick.
i've got mine that i took off when i first got my bike.. you're welcome to have it.. just pay for shipping [thumbsup]

Sooo.. . pressure plates need to be oriented a certain way or they don't go on?
I've had a bunch of plates off and back on, I never paid attention to the index. I've never had one not go right back on.
What am I missing?
I dunno, but the plates all have orientation markings and every manual I've read states that you should obey.
Maybe it doesn't matter.... I dunno.
But I obey, because I'm not keen on ever purposely ignoring something that might bugger up the system.
HOWEVER, FYI.... I couldn't find any differences to the pressure plate other than the marking. But what do i know.

You must have been lucky...
you'll find that if the mark on the clutch hub post and the mark on the pressure plate aren't lined up the hub post's wont line up with the holes in the PP when the teeth are engaged. I think you may be able to get away with being one hole away from the mark, but the posts wont be in the center of the PP holes when teeth are engaged.
Interestingly, I bought this pressure plate:

And it didn't have a mark that I could find. I figured out the proper orientation by comparing the hole to teeth pattern between the new versus stock pressure plates. If you look at the back the spacing of teeth to holes is definitely not symmetrical.

Looks like there is a mark inside the spring well for the one at the 8'oclock position. Is that it, or is it something weird in the pic? Many of the marks are really small.
Hub has 37 teeth, and there are 6 spring posts.
37 is not evenly divisible by 6, so there's only one way the PP can mate with the hub, as the PP engages with the hub and spring posts.
Well I put it back together with the stock P.P. for now (glass bead blasted) ...

I like the looks of it with the SPYDER and the SS springs and bolts !!!

That looks very nice. I'm interested in combining that Spyder spring retainer with an EVR pressure plate to give it color layers. Imagine a black Spyder on the following:

Opinions? ;D
That looks good with the bead blast finish. I might just do that with mine. I was going to use the Dremel to wire brush the finish but I like that better.

Nope, perfect as it is [thumbsup] (no Spyder, IMO)
OK, lets get practical (cheap) for a minute here. This replacement is a balance of Bling Value and Repairing a flaw. In this case the ratio is 100% bling and 0% for repair. Unless the bottom of the spring buckets have actually bent, and the bottoms are breaking out, the pressure plate is transferring all of the spring force to the plates. The holes are of no consequence.

Ok, your one minute of being practical is over ;D back to bling, please.....
