Title: Caliper upgrade & disc offset
Post by: Betty on January 23, 2009, 05:54:14 PM
Esteemed colleagues of the DMF,

I am considering a brake upgrade on my '05 S2R 800. The upgrade was to consist of new lines, rotors, calipers and pads (no upgrade of master cylinders or rear caliper) ... and no it was not going to be the DP kit, despite the relative value, I wanted something different.

I have read quite extensively on the forum and thought it would be a quick simple swap (I am mechanically inept and would not be doing the work myself) - on my enquiry of the suitability of the Brembo Goldline calipers (65mm offset, 2 pin, 2 pad, axial) I was told they would not suit my bike due to a different rotor offset. I have queried if this will be remedied by a change to 320mm discs but I am yet to receive a reply.

So to the question ... can somebody/anybody/everybody confirm that a change of calipers and up-size of the rotors will be a straight swap? I am assuming the offset required by the calipers is met solely by the rotor configuration so how do I ensure that the calipers and rotors I am getting would be correct?

BTW, the Boss has an '02 620 with the goldline brakes and the rotors are an extra 10mm apart. I just want to ensure I am not about to waste a heap of money by buying incompatible parts ... so rotors to suit an '02 620 would fix my dilemma?

Any other advice would be helpful and appreciated. I believe I will also need an angled fitting on the brake line that connects to the caliper (similar to the 620 and unlike the 'straight' fitting standard on the 800).

PS. Sorry about all the words, but figured that's what tech is all about  ;D

320mm discs with 6-bolt attachment will fit with the goldline calipers.

AFAIK, anything Ducati other than recent SBK, 696, S4Rt, and S4Rs will have suitable rotors.

For proper fitment, you will need new lines, OEM S2R 1000 will work, pretty sure all '02 and later Monsters that came with the goldlines will have a line that will work.

Thanks Speeddog.

So the offset is in the carrier itself and no spacers, etc are required?

I do plan on getting new lines (based on stock S2R 800) ... just need to get the caliper fitting different to the stock S2R 800.

The line you should consider most should be an '02 M750 as it would have the proper calipers and a coffin style master cylinder like your bike has already.

The offset is in indeed in the rotor carrier and therefore no other parts are required but the 6-bolt 320mm rotors and the calipers.

BTW...(to expand on Speeddog's posting) the 749-999 rotors are also 5 bolt like the S4Rs so they won't work either.

Too bad the rotors are so expensive, because calipers can be found very inexpensively from time to time.  I would like to upgrade my 695, but the $$ has turned me off.

The offset is on the rotor and is 10mm for almost all Ducati models prior to the 999 types. Any caliper/rotor combo from 916-998types(except the R models),SS,Monster,ST will fit as long as the caliper has the 65mm bolt spacing which came in about '98 or so, earlier discs will fit later calipers, but earlier calipers will need a bracket or new fork bottoms to bolt on. Mine came off a SS900,
As will Aprilia sbk calipers and rotors as these are the same apart from the colour .

i'll take your old brake setup off your hands when you get it done. i'm still using a single rotor setup  :-\
