i'm about to replace my left side crankcase/ alt cover and i was looking for a new gasket to install, but when looking through ducati's parts catalog i appeared there is no gasket use here, just "ducati fluid sealant" pt# 94247.0014
is this correct? no gasket, just sealant? if so is there a comparable off the shelf sealant i can use alternatively to ducati's? loctite or something? thanks
yeah Ducati engines use sealant rather than gaskets. That said (IIRC) ca-cycleworks had a listing for an alt cover gasket so you might could find one for it.
I would suggest Threebond 1211 or Yamabond 4, all the same crap as the Ducatibond
your gonna have to order either of them more than likely (unless you can catch a Yamaha dealership with the yamabond)
ca cycleworks has the paper gaskets and Desmo Times sells 3 Bond liquid gasket; which I used on 2 different case replacements and seems to be holding fine.
The key I believe is to make sure your case isn't warped by lying it on a flat piece of glass (like a window) and removing and cleaning off all old gasket then cleaning the surfaces of any oily residue. I found a sharp edged plastic scraper was helpfull at removing old gasket along with a fine file laid flat on the gasket case and gently filing surfaces. Prepped mating surfaces with xylene (sp?). I found the liquid gasket a little thin so make sure you put it on and let it set for a good amount of time (4 Min depending on temp humidity etc). Label all bolts and where they go (there all different lengths, don't say I didn't warn ya!) ... get a cover puller ... don't miss the allen bolt under the sprocket cover .... good luck post how it went; cheers D
