Title: The LSD Motorcycle Oil Thread
Post by: caffeinejunkee on May 13, 2008, 04:43:36 PM
OK, it's been suggested that we need some more moto threads on this board.  [moto] So, here it is:

We started an oil discussion this past Saturday while smoking cigars and drinking some martinis.

I use Mobil 1 20w-50 V-twin in my 695. I know that some wet-clutch folks talk about clutch slippage when using this, but I have not experienced that after two go-rounds.

What do you think is the best oil for Duc's and why?

Why not throw in the argument of conventional versus synthetic while we are at it?  ;)

I use amsoil 10w40 motorcycle really for two reasons,

1. I know that's it 100% full synthetic
2. my supplier can get me however much I want pretty much at cost, straight to my doorstep in under 24 hours with no added shipping costs because the distributor drop ships from dallas

I'm a oil whore... can I say that? I'll use just about anything. I hate to admit it but it's true. Recently used Maxima "Maxim4" premium 10-40 in two oil changes, used to use Silkolene 10-40 until I couldn't find more than 1-2 bottles at a time at bike shops, even used boring off the shelf "Suzuki" brand 10-40 from Action Suzuki/Kawi recently. Really need to centralize my brand of oil so that all my scooters are running the same stuff. Of course I have been saying that for 10-15 years. [roll] I am interested in the whole Amsoil oil thing and the Ducati filter they offer.

I'm running AMS 10w40 in the 1098s and Motul in the Race bike... both great oil...

George, can't go wrong with any kind, just what you can easily get... besides its not like your racing and looking for the performance difference...

i think i'm going to start using a 20W-50 synthetic just because the SS seems to run so damn hot; i can't imagine what it will be like in the middle of summer here...unless Randy is able to work magic that brings the temp down (he said it may actually be running a bit rich).  saturday after coming back from charles' place that night it melted the plastic center of the rizoma clutch cover...i'm guessing that's not a good thing.

Dang, that is hot. :o I noticed it was still pretty hot even after it was on the lift for a while.

Aya, I totally agree with that....

Mine got over 300 before--no melted parts, and I was told the same thing as Chris. this is one of the reasons why I use the 20w - 50 V Twin.

You should not have had to take it off The 620, it doesn't have a plastic cover....does it??  ???

Rich modify your cover by removing the plastic cover and and grind off the screw holes where it mounts, then it will be really open!  [thumbsup]

Seriously tho, it can be done and I'm sure Randy can put it together.  It would be a rare bird in these parts and would drive CJ nuts with envy. ;D

Just a thought (I have one every year and there's no guarantee that its worth anything but...), wouldn't it be cool if AMS prepped 4 or 5 old 620s for track day use and rental?  No headlight, clip ons, high mounts....

Oh yet and they could use any oil they chose... ;)

That would be cool.  I would hate to get the 900 out on the track after spending so much on getting it back to the LYD and laying it down, even gentley.  I would rent a 620 to track it.  Put sliders on it!  [thumbsup]

I once had a mechanic tell me that it is not good to change oils--to stick with one. Any thoughts on this?

I've been using Mobil 1 20-50 for v-twin. I get some slipping in higher gears. I'm about to do an oil change and was thinking about Motul. I have a wet clutch, BTW.

Motul is what AMS uses I believe.  I don't think you can go wrong by going that route, but it is a bit pricey in comparison to Repsol or Mobil1.  I'm currently using Silkolene Race (~$55 from ML) in the 848 and I haven't had any problems with it.

Dont go for the V-twin specifically designed oils. Why? because they're designed with the american version of the twin, lower revving, lower hp. They're specifically not designed for high performance engines.

You should be fine with whatever else fully synthetic you can find. Amsoil is highly recommended....

i've used mobil1 the last several oil changes; elitetc ships a case of 6qts for like $60.  haven't had any issues...though i've been wondering if i should go to something better able to take heat with the SS... like a 20-50 (i've been using 10-40 in all the bikes)

I use tofu oil in the crankcase of both my bikes.  It produces no smell, has no taste what-so-ever and is completely cholesterol free.  Burns clean    [evil]

There was a HUGE oil thread in the Tech section at TOB it spanned over a year and after all the experts and opinions were weighed in the overall consensus was that Mobile1 4T 10w40 was the best overall for our application. And now it is available at Wal-Mart for $8.50/qt  I have been using it in both the 695 (wet clutch) and the S2R (dry) with no issues at all.  Wally-World  carrying it  has been a bonus, I can get it 24/7 and cheaper than any of its competitors.

That's good to know; I've been using the pricey Motul equivalent from CycleGear but I've used Mobil 1 in my car for many years.  Now it looks like I can just one-stop shop at WalMart for all that stuff.

Thanks for the info  [thumbsup]
