Title: Prescription glasses wearers
Post by: Buckethead on February 16, 2009, 06:18:58 PM
What do you use when you ride your moto?

I've got a pair of Nike shades that I wear during daylight hours that work well. They're comfortable and they give me a great field of vision.

At night, my regular glasses don't work so well. I wear smaller rectangular frames. They're fine off the bike, but when I'm grabbing the handlebars and looking up/forward, I'm basically looking over the lenses.

Anyone using something with replaceable lenses, like a Wiley X style?

What are you using and how do you like it?

I had small oval frames and didn't have a problem.

Later I decided I'd rather stop fussing with glasses and got LASIK.

I have the same problem with my glasses at night.

Oakley makes great Rx lens, both pair of my sunglasses are oakley's.  You could get a pair with clear lens for use at night.  They also have a couple styles that have interchangable lenses.

They are expensive ~$100+ for the frame and $90/lens.  Worth every penny.  YMMV

I wish they would make Rx face shields.

Its a nice thought, but a physical impossibility. Well, for a person with both eyes.

It would be perfect for me then.   [thumbsup]

I wear contacts when I ride.

To the OP:
Is this not an option?

+1, I've seen some of my patients come in with the Oakley Rx glasses, and they make a really high quality lens.

I have gotten two pair of Dragon Sunglasses from this website. www.heavyglare.com
They can do most wraparound style frames with prescription lens (except they don't sell Oakley)
Both pairs I have gotten have been nothing short of perfect as far as lens correctness. I have a really heavy presription too.  And people are constantly amazed that they are prescription glasses.
They have all levels of tint depending on what you want and how much you want to spend. And all this is done online. I am getting ready to order my third pair.

Best solution is bring your helmet and bike to the store and try every frame under your helmet and on your bike until you get one that works.

Sounds like a good idea.

but I wear contacts when i ride. Want lasik but my eye isnt stable enough for it yet.

those Oakleys look really nice, but you would still have to carry a regular set because you cant wear shades indoors. You can try a sample of contacts with a printout coupon from acuvue.com (they are the best brand IMHO, and you should go with the oasis ones, they cost more, but they are loads more comfortable then regular soft contacts).

I wear these prescription Oakley glasses, but they don't stay on the bridge of my nose with my helmet on. They wonder up into my unibrow.

I use a tinted visor for sunny days.

You think the Oasis are comfy? You should check out the lenses from a brand called Biofinity.
They have the highest Silicon Hydragel content of any lens, and are by far the most comfortable lenses I have ever worn. I was previously wearing Acuvue 2, and then the Oasis as well. They are also a monthly lens, so tend to stay comfier and cleaner a little longer.

I love them.

I suppose it is. I've never had them and never really considered them. Maybe I should.

I just ended up getting a pair of Wiley X XL-1's (http://www.wileyx.com/EcommSuite/ProductDetail.aspx?ActivityCode=MOTORCYCLE&SeriesCode=163&ProductLine=286,XL1&ItemCode=291#parts). I figure they'll do double duty as my safety glasses when I go shooting.

Exactly what I did. The girl working the counter looked at me kinda funny, but that's nothing new. I didn't have the bike there, so I couldn't be *absolutely* certain they'd work, but I tilted my head down and looked all around and the frames weren't in my way. Plus they've got a foam gasket around the eyes so I don't have to worry about dust/sand/bugs getting in my eye if I've got the visor cracked.

I don't bother riding with glasses for 3 reasons.

1) Can be uncomfortable.
2) They may fog up.
3) Peripheral vision may be compromised.

How much higher is it? Oasis are 63% IIRC. More silion hydragel  is fine by me! mine get uncomfortable after ~12 hours, and after a week, theres no way i can wear them over night. How much did you pay for hte biofinity compared to your oasis (im paying $150 for 6 boxes)

Hell peripheral vision doesn't even exist with glasses.

It does if they wrap around.

3) Peripheral vision may be compromised.

1) major fitment issue when I was shopping for my 1st helmet. for me, arai made for painless interaction w/my oakley A-wires

2) the cleaner I use has really good anti-fog properties, but it don't get cold here

3) not w/oakley A-wires, or the like. they wrap well, since they ARE a sporty, sunglass frame.

been meaning to replace my glasses, since mine are pretty dang old... iirc, oakley was just breakin' into the Rx thing at the time. I just went and bought sunglasses and had clears put in.

but anyway. any new pair I'd want to wear on the bike, I'd test fitment w/my lid before buying.

lasik is nice, but the glasses make me look smrt  ;D

i was thinking more along the lines of generic glasses. the wrap around one are okay. the curvature on the lens really distorts things IMHO. Then again going from months of contacts to glasses all of a sudden also makes the whole world look like a skate boarding video to me.

I also have a pair of normal, flat, glasses, and those IZ_ peripheral edges are VERY noticable after wearing wrapped glasses for so long. kinda makes me wonder why I switched back to 'em lol

I just wear my glasses.  I have two different clear lens frame combos and a pair of Maui Jim's wrap prescription sunglasses.  I have no problems with peripheral vision.  I do have a problem with fogging in the cold, but that is fixed by just not stopping. [thumbsup]  I also rarely ride with the visor down, except on the slab.

I have never worn contacts and figure they would just be a huge pain on a motorcycle, and all my other outdoor activities.

Interesting, I never even realized the peripheral vision problem w/ glasses.  [roll] I can still things moving and then turn to focus on them. I think I'll go try this out right now on my way to get food.

I did like a couple other people did and took my helmet to get my glasses - without riding.  ;D They look at you funny but whatev. I just answer their quizzical looks with the truth and then then laugh and realize how much sense it makes.
