Hi everyone,
Dave here from the Apple Isle. ;D
I've only had the bike a little while, and the mods are starting to happen pretty quickly.
So I thought I'd document everything here so that I can have a bit of a history of my new machine.
And I'm sure I'll get heaps of advice from you lot as well!
So here she is when I first picked her up in Brisbane:

I then rode back down the coast via the Princess Highway, which was a very nice ride.
When I got home, I did a bit of chopping [evil]
Then went for a ride up and down the A3 8)

Watch out for European wasps !! :o
When I had my yellow VTR 1000 I was sick of being attacked by the little critters when pulled up at the lights, and scrambling to find neutral and closing my visor before one got in and cracked the shits!! [roll] ;)
I still reckon yellow is a top colour though [moto]
so where's the pics of the mivvs dave? I know what you've been up to!
Thanks Dragonworld. When I was first looking for a monster, all I would even consider was red or black.
This one was a great deal, and now that I've had it a while I love the Yellow [thumbsup]
I picked up a great little tail bag from aussiebiker.com.au
(http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/07022009263.jpg)

Here's the latest addition ;D
Mivv carbon lowmounts supplied by Carl from bikemonkey.com.au
Carl's service is first class, and his price was better than any of the Yanks too!
They took less than 3 weeks to arrive, which I reckon was great as they were a special order from Italy.
Yeah, I know the pic is a bit crappy. I've been too busy riding, listening to the sweet sound coming out of my - rear end ;)

Beat me to it! Ducati Yellow is an awesome colour, but I felt the need to get rid of mine, so now gone dark! [drink]
oooohhh Ivan go to the Dark side [evil]

Hey our avatars are very similar, except now you have no beer tray, I painted mine YELLOW so it blended in, my other half has chopped his dark. Did I tell you we stripped the outer edge of his wheel rims and polished them a few weeks ago and they look awesome I wanted to get mine done professionally but they wanted $150-200 a rim, going to do mine this way now.

ps, nice bike, nice mods! DSS with low-mounts for the WIN!
Haha - thanks Chris, you can just pretend to be yellow for a while. :P
EGAS, those rims sound cool, I'll have to check em out!
And maybe I need a new avatar to match my new tail...
Went for a little blat up to Scottsdale today (sorry Bazz, didn't quite make it to St. Helens).
There was a bit of rain on the range as I came back - man that road is like ice when its wet :o
I though I better get another pic of the MiVV's too

well dont they look the ducks guts , have you taken the balffles out yet and you still got those dunflops on and when are you up for another ride some where im starting to get withdrawale symtoms cheers bazz , ps ceep the moding going looking good [thumbsup]
Thanks Bazz, I'm very happy with them. They look great, they're very well made and sound real "deep and growly" too ;D
I haven't taken the baffles out yet, but even now they sound heaps better then the stock cans.
And yeah, the dunlops are still scaring the shit out of me each time go for a ride :o
The bloke out at Scottsdale quoted me $235/$315 for standard Pilot Powers, and $285/$377 for 2CT PP's.
I changed my belts today too - pretty bloody easy if you ask me... And now that I'm looking at the photo, I see that my battery is a bit low too!
I was going to paint the belt covers black.... but it was such a nice day I decided to go for a ride up to beaconsfield and back through Frankford. Nice little set of twistys there near "Kelly's Lookout" [thumbsup]
what method did you youse to get belt tension they look a bit too loos in that photo , re kellys look out that would be the way to bring mick in cheers bazz
Oh yeah, they're still loose in the pic. I tightened them up after that.
I did the old - 5mm allen key on the horizontal / and 6mm on the vertical trick. I did about 100km today and she ran pretty well, I will check them again in the morning though.
I might have to do a bit more "reconnaissance" out that way, to find out where the good roads are.
And now for a big noise from the induction?? K&N with a box top mod mebbe?? [thumbsup] ;D
Changed my plugs and fuel filter today.
The old filter had '98 stamped on it, so obviously it was due to be changed [roll]
Wasn't that a bastard of a job - trying to get my arm into the tank to pull out the filter. Then it took me a good half hour to work out how the filter was actually mounted in there. When I did work it out, it was actually quite easy though ;)
Here's what the old plugs looked like. The outside of them is actually quite clean, which leads me to believe that they are fairly new. As you can see the tops of the plugs are really black - running a bit rich? What do you guys reckon?
Then I removed the baffles from the MiVV's....
Man - they are LOUD But still sound sweeeeeet.
When I first started her up, I thought "holy shit - that's loud".
The bike sounds totally different now. Heaps louder, heaps deeper, heaps nastier, now I really do feel like a hooligan ;D
At idle, the ground trembles beneath me...
Cruising along around 3000-3500 rpm, the deep deep Ducati twin sounds spectacular...
When "giving her some" I'm surprised the bitumen beneath me doesn't shatter into a million pieces as I literally tear along...
The grumble on deceleration is just sublime...
And the little "bop" when blipping the throttle on down-shift makes men turn their heads, and makes women think "who is that bad-ass on the motorcycle" :-*
My flatmate was driving the other way on the highway this arvo.
As we passed he said to his girlfriend "I gotta admit, Davo's bike does sound bloody cool"
hehe [cheeky]
yes the plugs look a bit wet. running a bit rich there Mr meanie. but glad you took those baffles out, aaahh the sweet sound i can hear them from here.
thats what i like to here the ducati music as for the plugs if you check them arfter riding around launy thats how they should look i gauntee they will go white arter a ride down here but how old is your air filter cheers bazz ps are we going to escort mmick when he comes down here [thumbsup]
So should I check them after a good blast then?
My air filter looks brand new.
Yeah, I should be able to meet Mmick at Devonport [thumbsup]
You busy tomorrow? Weather's looking good, thought I might head up the A3 :P
no not doing anthing to morrow be home all day [moto]
Cool, I'll send you a text in the morning.
You should be able to hear me when I'm at Scotsdale ;D
have a great ride Bazz and Meanie and play safe
Will do Jukie.
Here's a little video to keep you entertained [popcorn] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XZtNxqCnAs
Note: This was filmed before I removed the baffles.
Thanks Mr Meanie, say hi to Bazz for me and give him a Big Kiss from me too
Very nice
Dave the best bloke for anything Ducati mechanically is Ross Alison, I am sure you know that thou [thumbsup]
He is the best and knows Ducatis inside out, he is down near Coats Patons old building in case you didn't know. I got my tyres thru him and he was the best price for the 2ct Pilot powers.
EGAS
thanks dave for riding down and having a short ride sorry i couldnt ride further its getting harder and harder every day to ride and by the way that thylacine has the loudest bark ive ever heard and thats no bullshit tassie rider i had to ceep dave behind for at least 30 meters other whise i couldent here my bike and when he in front the noise is earth shattering top stuff dave that bike is know sounding and looking great cheers bazz [thumbsup]
Thanks Bazz. Yeah, it was a great little ride.
I feel more and more confident each time I follow you through those twisties. ;D
And I keep getting closer to the edges of the tyres each time too. [evil]

Those double white lines obviously have a different meaning down there in Tasmania Bazz.
Righto Dannog, I'll see if I can get you something more interesting tomorrow ;)
For some reason my camera keeps shutting down. I think it is moving around too much, as I only have it strapped onto the top of the tank bag.
Hey Bazz, that road looks familiar - St. Hellen's?
And Betty - double lines down here mean: bikes can takeover, but cars can't [cheeky]

Yeah but it also seems the car drivers don't mind having the whole of their vehicle on the wrong side of the road ... around a corner!
i was just waiting for that goose to meet some one else doing the same thing but i must be truthful and say the wost afenders are bikes ive cliped the handle bare of another bike he was too deep in the corner , camper vans are the worst they think there driving a semi trailer but its all fun and ceeps you on your toes [laugh]
Another little vid. The baffles must have accidentally fallen out or something [laugh]
Some better sound for you Dannog ;)
No rear wheel action yet, I just need a little more practice [cheeky]

Wow, that bracket make the vid very bouncy. Either that or the road in Tassie are a lot worse than I remember.
Looks like your enjoying it. [moto]
Actually, I don't even have a bracket.
You can see the tank bag has some bungy cord on top, the video camera is strapped on there.
I'll get one of the fuel cap brackets eventually.
Whoo-Hoo, more goodies arrived today.
Magura bar,top triple and clutch cover from Spider Exports [thumbsup]
Bar end mirrors from Ebay.
Interesting choice in boxes there Spider [laugh]
AAARRRRR that better MR Meanie love that sound. Gee i though your bike wasn't going to start there for a second. Very good vid, just a bit bumpy, cant help that. [thumbsup] [moto]
Bugger >:(
Bloody top triple doesn't fit :'(

The diameter of the middle hole is way too large and off centre from the original.
And it will hit the frame near the ignition.
Anyone got any other ideas?
So, the triple and bars have been sent back to Spider. :(
Thanks for trying anyway mate, at least we know now, that they don't fit [thumbsup]
I've ordered a "blemished" Cyclecat top triple from Ca-Cycleworks. It was pretty cheap, and I'll polish it or powdercoat it or something.
Then I just have to decide on which clip-ons. I'm thinking about the Speedymoto Tall-Boys, but they are a lot of $$$$ :-\ Or then there's the Swatt Moto clip-ons too. I want some with a bit of rise. But I do like the adjustable down angle of the Speedy's :-\
The new bar end mirrors are on. I love 'em! Not only do they look cool, but the vision from them is soooooooo much better than the stock mirrors.
Eg. from the left mirror, I can see the lane behind me and the lane to the left of me, vice versa for the right.
They are slightly convex so objects in mirror are actually closer than they appear.
I've done a little painting too. Belt covers, sprocket cover and headlight brackets have all been painted black.
And then there's the clutch...
Stock cover from Spider has been drilled, cut, dremelled, filed and painted.
Pressure plate has also been painted - I don't know how long it will last though, might have to get it powdercoated.
Springs were soaked overnight in coke (yes CocaCola, it's really acidic) then hit with the wire wheel to get rid of all the rust.
Spring caps were also hit with the wire wheel. (I do however, have stainless springs and gold caps coming with the top triple) ;D
(http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/11032009382.jpg)
My gauge housing was also cracked. So I pulled it apart, glued it up, and painted it the same black as the belt covers.
While the front end was apart, I moved the front indicators down a little, cleaned up some of the wiring, and cleaned out a lot of bugs ;)
Oh, and I inspected and greased the speedo cable, and changed all brake and clutch fluids. AND cleaned out a whole lot of crap from behind the front sprocket.
Whoa - busy day...
Time for a few [drink]
You don't muck around do you.
Well done Mr Meanie.
The Post Man arrived today with a box of bling [cheeky]
I ordered the parts online, on Tuesday afternoon. Within an hour I received a PM from CannedIce saying my parts had been shipped!
Then they arrived today. That's less than 7 working days for delivery from the States :o
I'm very impressed with CannedIce and Ca-Cycleworks [thumbsup]
Gotta love the 'blemished' clamp. Anything visble?
There's a tiny little scratch/mark around the centre hole. Most of which will be covered by the big bolt on top of the stem anyway! ;D
that's a great pickup. the cyclecat stuff is great [thumbsup]. and yes, chris and the good people at ca-cycleworks have been awesome to deal with for me as well in the past.

EGAS
Went for a ride yesterday.
Launnie to Campbeltown down the unmentionable highway :-[, then turned left onto Lake Leake Road.
I've heard riders say it's the best road in Tassie. Never having even driven it in my car, I had high expectations. Well...
I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't real impressed either :-\
The road surface is quite nice, but nothing special. Traffic was low, especially being a weekday. Corners were mostly long, wide sweepers. Which are fine if you're on a 1098 @ a constant speed of 150+. Some people might go for that sort of thing, but I don't really think it's suited to the Monster, or to my keeping my licence either ;)
So yeah, nice road, not bad, but certainly not the best road in Tassie.
I turned left onto the Tasman Highway (A3) and headed through Cranbrook to Bicheno. I thought this 32km stretch was more entertaining than the 57kms of LL Rd [cheeky]. Here's the view down towards Freycinet:
As I approached Bicheno, the temperature dropped significantly. The town was covered in a thick blanket of sea fog. [moto]
I can just imagine the pedestrians now, peering into the fog, "What is that noise?"
Suddenly a light appears, followed by a bright yellow blur, and the almighty roar of the Mivvs [evil]
Actually, Bicheno is a quiet little seaside town. I just "burbled" through at less than 50 [cheeky]
A few minutes North is the turn off to St. Mary's, via Elephant Pass [moto]
The first half is a very nice surfaced, tight, twisty, dual lane mountain pass. Beware of fallen rocks and on-coming traffic crossing the unbroken double lines :o. The "face" of the pass faces North so the road is well lit during the day.
The second half there is no centre line. The road narrows and the shoulders are, well, gravelly. As the altitude increases the road begins to follow the Southern side of Mt. Elephant. Most of the tight left handers were hidden in shadow, many were wet. There's a couple of right hand 180* switchbacks. [thumbsup]
Near the top is the World Famous Elephant Pancake Shop!
St Mary's is a nice little place. Bazz and I have had a couple of [beer] there.
Just before the fun begins again, there is a little park. I thought I'd take a couple more snaps.

What are you doing about clipons for your new triple?
I reckon I'll have to go with the Speedy Moto Tall Boys.
I think the triple is too chunky to have clip-ons with risers in front of the triple. They are also around the height that I want too.
In any case, I go back to sea tomorrow, so I've got 6 weeks to decide :-\

I'd like to put the fairing back on, but at the moment the brake and clutch masters are in the way.
Maybe if I made up new brackets to move the headlight forward it could fit. At the moment it sits about 10mm lower than it originally did.

Riding position is WAAAAAYYYYY lower now. I was a bit worried at first, but after going for a quick fang I soon got used to it. Long distance rides might be a different story [roll]
Hmm, burnouts [evil] That would be a good excuse to get some new rubber...
Looking good there YM.
I'm gonna have to catch up with you. Take a look shortly you'll see my first effort.
WOW meanie starting that bling factor now, i just love it. looks great
Dave, your bike looks mighty fine [thumbsup] [thumbsup]
Mmick
At 2:00 this arvo, I officially became a home owner ;D
This morning I hired a "Budget" truck, the one with the powerlift platform on the back.
The truck didn't have any tie down points on the deck, but it did have some down fairly low. Just in case, I removed the rear cowl, pipes, foot pegs and controls. I really didn't want to bend any bling ;)
I wanted to get the bike in first, so I backed her up onto the lift platform. She sat diagonal across it, and only just fit. My mate Riley had the control for the hydraulics, and he lifted me up (on the bike) in a not so smooth kind of way :-\ Yes I was shitting myself. :o
So here we were, I was on the bike with the front wheel only just on the outside corner of the platform, and Riley had a hold of the rear of the bike. He had to bounce the rear end around enough so I could back her into the truck the rest of the way.
Once she was in and centered, we strapped her down.

Then I got all my boxes that were full of soft stuff, and put them down either side. So if the bike did decide to lie down on the trip South, hopefully she would land on a nice soft bit of cardboard. ;)
Then I filled the rest of the truck with my other crap ;D

When we unloaded, I parked the truck across the street on the flat ground to unload the bike. We wiggled / bounced the bike back around into position. I told Riley to lower me all the way, in one fowl swoop "Don't stop until the platform hits the bitumen". This way worked much better.
Because we were across the street his meant I had to start her up and ride up the driveway.
Riley said: "Don't you need exhaust pipes or something?"
I said: "Nah she'll just be farken loud!"
Actually she wasn't much louder than normal (if at all). I rode up into the garage, then walked back across the street.
"Sounded like a bloody Harley, I'm embarrassed" I said :-[ [laugh] [laugh]
Tomorrow, the bling goes back on, and I set up the workshop.
I'll buy furniture next week...
good stuff dave
Why SOUTH Meanie?
To the beach Egas, to the beach.
should have gone east not south [cheeky]
Nah, south is where all the action is!
Isn't it funny that in a small place like Tassie we are so parochial. We are not really that far apart in mainland terms.
A couple of pics from my ride the other day :D

Sure was. Sorry, I'm always too late with the answers. Got any photos from that?
Sorry Leigh, didn't get any pics.
Here's one that some nice fella took of me though ;)

I got my Tassie plate and rego sticker the other day. The plate is blue and white :-\. The blue doesn't match anything on the bike at all. I think I'll have to get a black and white personalised plate to replace it. Unfortunately in Tassie we can only get "ABC12" or "AB123" so the choices are a bit limited.
The rego sticker, on the other hand, is perfect. It's brown and yellow, and has a picture of a Thylacine on it! :) :D ;D
ooohhh Dave looking good there :o

No worries. I'll try to get some action ones next time. [thumbsup]

New rubber ;D
I was going to get Pirelli's, but there was a 2 week wait to get them in.
With the old Dunlop rear down to the wire, and all this beautiful weather, I needed tyres NOW!!!
They had a couple of 2CT's on the shelf, so I said "chuck em on".
I am very happy with them :D
cool thats good to know, Betty and i will need some new ones when we get back from turismo
Jukie (& Betty) - just a thought - you may want to put new tyres on to do Turismo. I know from previous experience that the Tassie roads are pretty harsh on tyres (I mean that in the nicest possible way :-*) Also carrying luggage adds to the the wear. Have you looked at the safety inspection sheet yet? It asks for 75% tread at the start (what you have left at the end is up to you [laugh])
I'm planning on doing lots of riding between then and now to use up the current back tyre so that I can put a new one on just before turismo.
Dave - scuse my ignorance but what are 2CT please? [roll]
They're the Michelin dual compound.

so you fill the difference from them old truck tyres [cheeky]
Ooooh yeah Bazz, the difference is unbelievable :o
Turning into a corner on the old tyres, she used to kick and buck and protest and just not want to turn at all. I really had to wrestle her into the corners.
Now she is much happier :D
I can hear her mid corner "Come on Mr. Meanie, faster faster, lean more"
The old rear was a 180/55, the new one is a 170/60. Now that I have the correct profile, it has totally transformed the bike's handling. Soooo much more stable in the corners. I can't wait to get her on the track [evil]
I've almost reached the little Michelin Man on the edge of the tyre. After my track day, in a couple of weeks, he'll be goooooone.... ;D
And here's the Christmas Bling ;D
(http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm441/Zook_2008/The%20Monster/rearset.jpg)
The pillion pegs go on just behind the bobbin holding the can. Hopefully I'll be trying them out tonight ;)
The Thylacine definitely needs to get a set of these so you can remove that dame ugly chain tensioners and make her ass look 8).

Um ah that sounds like DAVE'S GOT A DATE [clap] [clap] either that or he's going to try riding from the back seat [laugh]
Dannog, I think you are right. Who makes those?
Heather, you're right too ;D ;D ;D
Dave, check out the following:

I recon the Corsair-Industries ones are the best and you can have them in GOLD (careful Jukie doesn't see them!)
NB they are sold in a pair.
After that you'll need some billet or titanium axle nuts to finish it off. [thumbsup]
ooohhh arrrrr Gold
Good luck with the date Dave. Anyone I know? [thumbsup]
BTW, you have been tormenting me this week. Monday and today I have looked out my office window to see you ride past. On Monday you went around the block and went past again. I think your doing it on purpose as I'm at work and your out riding. [bang]
Well, let's just say that she doesn't ride a Jap bike ;)
Tormenting you? That's bloody awesome ;D
If I actually knew where your office was, I would ride past every hour, on the hour, and blip the throttle according to the time.
That way, the whole office would know what the time was!

Hmn seen pictures on Facebook of a Triumph Daytona with a lady rider?? [roll]
Oh H, I didn't know that [roll] was the "jealous emoticon" [laugh]
Been doing some FB detective work have we?
You've nothing to worry about. I not sure it was actually a date anyway. I think she was more interested in the bike than me [bang]
And if Jukie ever heard about it, she'd put me in the DOM category :-\
what another DOM shame on you Dave shame shame shame [roll]
