Here's what happened:
Quoted below from Ronr after his snowboard accident - he "mousetrapped" ie: highsided head over heels over the tip of the board - damn that Sierra Cement! >:(
"Went to see the orthopedic surgeon today hoping to hear about some torn ligaments in my left shoulder. Instead, my clavicle was broken in a few pieces. It's broken right next to the joint, which they said only happens about 10% of the time. Funny, that's the exact same thing that happened to my right collar bone a few years ago. The doc can pin and/or strap it back together, whatever it takes.
The picture shows the new break. I'll have to see if I can scan in my old x-ray for a comparo. Hope to be mobile again soon. ;D
If you look closely in the top left corner, you can see the titanium strap holding my head on."
damn. damn damn damn.
Speedy recovery [thumbsup]
duuuuuuuude. that looks pretty gnarley! [thumbsup] drink lots of [drink] and get better so we can see that seksah bike again soon.
if you need anything let us know....
He told me last night that he'd be in surgery today...
SPEEDY RECOVERY!!! [thumbsup]
(-and the offer still stands to help keep the 1198S battery charged [evil] )
-R (&D)
You should stay on bikes and stay off of dangerous things like skies, snowboards, etc... Didn't your mother warn you about things like that? [laugh] I remember when I was in rehab (physical not liquor!) with my knee years ago during ski season and the place was always packed with injured post-op skiers. Everyday there were new people with lots of repaired torn ACLs (Chris, isn't that what happened to you playing ball??) and assorted broken bones. Made a note to myself... stay away from the slopes!! [bang] It looked like a combat zone and they all happily traded their ski/war stories.
Anyway, sorry to hear it. Bummer. Guess that means you aren't taking Stoner's place on the MotoGP team anytime soon. :P Hope you mend up quickly. [thumbsup]
Get better real fast Ron! But I would have to agree with Fastwin, stay away from the slopes, plus its cold!!!
Mend quickly. Will be thinking of you while in surgery Monday. Here's to recovery! [drink] [beer] [drink] [beer]
Damn, well Ron, guess "some things just need breakin'" [laugh]
No, but seriously - best wishes for a speedy recovery! Hopefully you'll have some fun painkillers to mix with mardis gras cocktails ;D
Hey, there wasn't a turkey involved in any of this was there? Just wondering. :P
you can't spell pain without "turkey"
Here's one for Ron! [drink] [beer]
Thanks Cyclone for posting the info. Pretty limited Internet abilities now that I'm at the hospital on the iPhone with one paw. Some things are meant to be done with two hands.
I really appreciate all the well wishes. This all happened pretty fast. Found out I needed surgery yesterday evening and the doc was able to fix me this morning. Figured I might as well get it over with.

Ha! Good one ;D. Unfortunately collarbones seem like they are always the first to go.
Nope, it's not collarbones... the first thing to go is the... um....uh... hmmm... I forget, but it's something important.
Pura vida!

ron get well soon sir. it sure is fun chasing you scott n will when we ride. i feel like tom from tom n jerry. those are some mice i will never catch.
p.s. has this group ever had any sort of safety meeting. we might need one. i know brian(neck), scott(finger), alan(a whole mess of probs from his accident), ron(collarbone) or i(knee) cannot give the class.
Hey, I'm all about safety stuff. Mine was a freaking wild animal attack! Like riding a scooter through Jurassic Park!! [laugh] Kind of a dumb, slow, feathered Velociraptor. [bang] [moto] ;D

Seriously, hope you're back to 100% soon, Ron [beer]
;D Other things Ronr did after the 1st Xray @ Angel Fire before driving 650 miles home!
1. Played Twister (the game) with some snowboarderettes in the parking lot because he felt amazingly limber.
2. Whipped four Harley guys because one said "reeking" & RR thought he heard "leaking".
3. A match of tennis
4. 36 holes of golf
5. Rings at the Gym
6. A little trap shooting
7. Arm wrestled the " big Indian " at Doc Martin's who always plays there for drinks - RR won !
8. Just a little rappel down a 1500 cliff at the Rio Grande gorge.
9. A salute to the Vietnam Veterans memorial - only thing that gave him pain ( in his heart ) !
10. A quick thirty laps on the snowmobile/ motocross track at Pajarito for a new track record !
Seriously Ronr - heal fast ! I would have been crying for mommy - not driving home ! Dude ! [bow_down]

Here's the low down on my near term riding prospects.
In sling for six weeks except for showers
No riding for three months (we'll see about that)
Surgery in four months to remove "hook plate" from shoulder since it will cause problems if left in
I think at six months total I'm pretty much good to go
I have about 200 miles on the 1198 that I've been waiting for since last May
I have zero miles on my 999 race bike that I've been rebuilding for various adventures this year
I know, poor me... but that's the story. Looks like I better run some Sta-Bil through all the fuel tanks.
btw - LOVE your new MG! Really unusual and lots of cool details.
Sorry for the down time. Been there, done that. It sucks. Especially with a new bike in the garage. Super bummer. Stay the hell away from the slopes! Look what it's done to you. Stick to what's safe... scooter riding!! [thumbsup] [moto] [beer]
Ow. Ow. OWWW!!
Get well soon!!
And remember, [bacon] [bacon] doesn't stop the pain, but it makes being in pain less [bacon]-less.
We all love hardware, so here's a shot of my repair. Went for my one-week checkup on Friday and everything is where it's supposed to be. The top plate and screws are holding the clavicle pieces all together. That L-shaped hook plate pulls the whole assembly down into position by restraining it with a protruding part of the scapula (shoulder blade).
Doc is totally not interested in me riding for a while. aarrrrrrrrr......
ouch. hope it heals quickly, too bad you have to go back to get it taken out though.
Doc, schmock... they all say that. "No riding...EVER!" Jennifer loved going to my post op appointments because it gave her the opportunity to ask the neurosurgeon if he thought I should ever ride again. >:( Every single appointment! >:( >:( Of course he said no, never again. Ha, up yours! [moto] I ought to go do a burn out in front of his office!!
Glad you are healing up. So when's our next ride? [laugh]
Just saw this thread... been away for a while. Get well soon, man!
my doc said to make sure i get bending done in my knee to keep it from locking up. i asked if i could ride he didn't say no but he did put a time limit for keeping it in that position. so i exceeded his time limit and rode to alan's for a party!! f' em if they can't take a joke.

That's gotta be a relief! Less things to itch, at least... How long will the metal stay in? Hmm, perhaps I should read the entire thread and find out, huh? :P
I hope rehab goes well for you, when the time comes.
all the best,
Ah, so a few months of hardware... Sounds annoying, but doable. And as for the down time, I've been bike-less for almost a year now. I think after the 6th month or so the cold sweats stop. Now I just dream about it every night, day dream about it every waking moment (makes those philosophy seminars hard to follow), and spend more time than is good for me surfing the web planning my next bike purchase.
Damn this addiction of ours!
Seriously, get well soon, and look at the bright side. If you can't ride, at least you can wax your bikes (one handed, forces you to enjoy it more!), tinker with bolt ons, and so forth. Just trying to rationalize a crappy situation :)
I'll see if I can get a Kitten or Lollibomb to deliver a 'nice' get well soon card to you Ron.

Recovery does suck doesn't it? Don't think mine will ever end. My neurosurgeon at my last post op appointment with him in Aug. 2007 wise-assly said "oh, a year from now you won't even know this happened to you". F#@ker! He'd better not run into me someday in a dark alley! >:(
Was your doc serious? I'm surprised he would be that far off, if he was the one inside your neck. I guess you haven't been back to let him know it's not working out? Maybe there's something that still needs fixing. If it's that bad you ought to get it looked at, that's the most miserable pain on the planet.

Doctors will sometimes give the patient unrealistic expectations for their recovery time because they want the patient to agree to the surgery without complaints. It is usually up to PT to tell the you guys how long it will really take for recovery...if you follow your plan of care....but everyone's recovery is different - in any case, Brian, sorry you are still having so much trouble. Being in pain for that long is really not cool at all! Also hope to see you on the bike again soon Ron! ;)

I have to laugh at it all otherwise I'd go nuts. Not a pain pill person or even an Advil kind of guy. But damn, he was so wrong it's not even funny. I joked at the offer of a handicap card for the rear view mirror... don't need one, hopefully never will. But that was my a##hole doctor's offer and when I asked about post op PT he said "get a personal trainer, I'm not prescribing PT". Like I said, I will beat that f#@ker senseless if I ever run into to him anywhere. I was warned he was a turd with horrible bedside manners and made nurses cry all the time but he was good at the mechanics. In my world the jury is still out since I am in pain, sometimes really bad pain, every day. Don't get me started on the nerve damage. Sometimes I have no feeling in my right hand and drop stuff every day. Oh... and I am right handed. OK, end of rant. Just damn glad I'm alive and not paralyzed and I can still ride most of the time. Could be worse. Just keep moving so you don't rust! [thumbsup] God damn stupid birds!

Weird, and I don't understand it. We both got x-rays shortly after the incident, and they didn't really look that bad. In my case, we couldn't even see my fracture, just thought the ligaments were torn. We both get home and get fresh x-rays, and it looks like a tornado struck in there.
Going to see the doc in the morning to get some new x-rays. I hope it's growing back nicely. My mojo has taken a major hit, having to wear this sling all the time.
I'll see if they know any inside poop on Lance's injury. I'm sure all those doctors hang out on shatteredclaviclechat.com. My doctor is probably bagging on Lance's in the Say Anything thread - "your screws are all crooked, did you buy your drill at K-Mart?!?"
