Haga
Fibrizio sp?
Haga is on a new bike and Fabrizio just does not come across a having the same internal drive as Max or Ben
HAga is on the DUC = proven race winner
Max on the new Aprilla = who knows what its going to do.

Max N.... not Max B

gotcha Max N looks bad ass too
I predict Aprilla has a DNF with mechanical problems. I am skeptical about that company with a first year bike with not a lot of time logged.

provisional qualifying... it's really just another practice session, but the times could be used to set the grid if tomorrow didn't happen for some goofy reason (like rain).

How does superpole work?
3 sessions, 12 minutes each.
session 1 starts with the fastest 20 qualifiers from the previous combined qualy sessions.
at the end of session 1, the slowest 4 are eliminated and comprise positions 17-20 on the grid.
at the end of session 2, the slowest 8 are eliminated and comprise positions 9-16 on the grid.
the final session produces positions 1-8 on the grid.

I'm pretty shocked by that, given that its a new bike. Then again, doesn't Corser hold the lap record? I thought I read that somewhere and was surprised to see it (cuz Bayliss holds 'em all. Or should).
I figured the priller would be close, but the BMW would be back there behind the Kawis. If both the BMW and the 'priller have the juevos to run up front, this year is gonna be awwwwwsummmm.

corser's track record is a 1'31.826 set in '07. bayliss set the pole record the same weekend with a 1'31.887.
for reference, melandri owns the motogp track record of 1'30.332 (set in '05) to hayden's pole record of 1'29.020 (set in '06).
It's very cool to see all 7 mfg's in the top 20 (admittedly kawa is barely in there).
I'm super excited to see both BMW and Aprilia in the top 8. Can't wait till the racing starts :-)
Of course I wish I could pay to see the qualifying live on line... that's the only thing motogp has on sbk right now, is that I can watch it online live.

did Haga bin it?
"Unfortunately the new Superpole proved a little difficult for us, and perhaps we didn't have the right tactics today. This new format means teams have to have tactics and there is more of a gamble. I would have liked to be faster of course and apologise to the fans that I won't be further forward on the grid but anyway, at least I don't go into tomorrow under great pressure, as I would have been if I had made pole! I am already thinking about my game plan for the races. We know we have been fast in all the sessions so far, we are comfortable with the race setting and we have pretty much decided with regard to the tyre to use for tomorrow's races. I will give 500% and I will go out there and do my best!"
I was lookin' for it, but can't find it again. I read some shitty translation earlier today.
Edit: it was sumptin' from DaineseDan
Quote from: DaineseDan;4765101Apparently a certain team boss (**cough** [SIZE="1"]Tardozzi[/SIZE]) from a certain factory (**cough** [SIZE="1"]Ducati[/SIZE]) are already pregnant doging about the Aprilia being an unfair machine as it is too much of a prototype and not in the spirit of the series. I say STFU and race ya whiners. You got your 200cc, now go use it pregnant doges. Here is the Italian site gpone.com response to the complaint. Sorry about the translation.
"There is already some 'argument at Phillip Island after a magnificent second half of Max Biaggi in the Superpole. To stir the souls that great enthusiast and team manager Jean Francois Batt is that without send it to say, has established the RSV-4 prototype.
E 'vero, in one sense: it is a prototype of ... series, and regularly sold to 20,000, even less than that other which is the prototype in 1198, not to mention the 1098 R. But why, then, are less prototyping the new Yamaha R1 and the all-new BMW S 1000 RR, which also arrives in dealerships only at the end of the season?
The regulation is this: For years, the Ducati is the first designed with motorcycle racing in the department and then put on the road, the prices (and running costs) are far from those of the other super, and now we are surprised by the Aprilia RSV -4?
But come on, a little 'consistency! If it is true as it is true that the new regulation - one that allows bicilindriche to get to 1,200 cc of displacement - is born because the operating costs of Ducati "serial" had become unsustainable, not complain.
After all what we see around the streets, in short, is not that disfigures: the top of the range of different homes all have 180 cc and sophisticated, the 1198 S has the traction control as standard, the Suzuki mapping variables, the M1, sorry, the R1 engine almost a "big bang" derived from MotoGP. In short, this Superbike is no longer that of a time ... or not?
To be more than once are the current super, because in the 70s just a Ducati Desmo 350 or 450, prepared to stay in the wake of a Honda CB 750 Four series that struggled to reach 180 Km / h Today almost all the 1000 almost 300. A nice step forward.
For this, however, even at Phillip Island will be a meeting to try to bring in SBK this track that was made to pull the collar from MotoGP. In future, therefore, it is likely that we will have more than a Superbike series.
One problem? How are we going to persuade fans not to laugh in the face of Superbike ... slower motion of their series? For all advice: buy one of the last "beasts", maybe its the Aprilia RSV-4. With these clear moon, sooner or later, will not buy the most."

Haga from waaaaaay back for the win and Fabrizio in 4th. [thumbsup] Max N and that Suzuki --> wow. It was so much faster in a straight line.

news from ben's camp:
Quote from: Larry Lawrence http://forums.13x.com/showpost.php?p=2428128&postcount=503
I got a text fom Phillips Island. It said Haslam hit Biaggi setting up a chain reaction which led to Spies being forced off the track in Race 1.
Later in the the race another rider's bike blew up right in front of Spies and he had to take evasive action again.

Man, that was just awesome. Race 1 was nothing like Race 2 (other than Haga [thumbsup]). The story of Race 1 was Haga, the BMW and the gixxers and no Spies. The story of Race 2 was Ben, Haga, the 'priller, a privateer Honda, and the fact that there were no BMWs to be seen and no gixxers up front.
A great weekend for Ducati and an amazing rookie weekend for Spies. WTF was it with the Yamaha being 12 KMPH slower than the Duc and 'priller? At one pt, they had Fabrizio at 302, Biaggi at 299, Haga at 296 and Ben at 289. Though I wonder if that was earlier when Ben was slower in the last part and wasn't getting as good a drive.
Race 2 was really good to watch. Close racing with a lot of passing and a tight group for the podium. Haslum and Laconi looked awesome. And Fabrizio needs to get his shit together. Seeing Ben cut off Max's nose in the first coupla turns was just perfect, particularly because of all the shit-talking about how he couldn't take the dicing in WSBK.
Doesn't someone owe some $ to the airfence? ;D

BTW, did you see in Race 2 that Haga's fastest lap was .4 faster than anyone else? And the second fastest was Biaggi? Spies was just more consistent.
Also, Max N's gixxer had the fastest time of the weekend at 316 mph (uh . . . I prolly mean kph ;D), but after all that talk about how much faster the Gixxer is, one of the privateer Ducs went 315 kph. I wonder how different the bikes are in getting to that top speed though. Also interesting is that Haga and Spies had the same fastest speed in Race 2, which was the slowest out of the top 12 bikes.
Superpole definitely make qualifying much more interesting. [thumbsup]
Haga has never been one to baby a set of tires. Biaggi is what has me confused. Last year you could see him build up speed over the course of each weekend. More often then not he was right up there come race time. Now this year his test times sucked, his practice times sucked, then all of a sudden (superpole?) he was right up there. You think Aprilia was playing possum up til the first superpole? I did not see that coming at all.
Amazing race! Great job by Haga and Spies. I was a little sad to see Fabrizio drop the ball there at the end of race 2

Although Spies enjoyed a quick pace from then on, his fight back was only good enough for 16th, one position out of the points. Still, he was philosophical about his chaotic first WSBK racing lap.
“I just had to put that first race out of my mind,†Spies said. “It was no one's fault, I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time in both incidents. It was frustrating because I knew I had the speed to run up front. Fortunately I had another race and it made me that much more determined.â€
..
“As the race progressed Nori and I were trying to work together to gap the rest of the field,†Spies explained. “It worked out well in the final part of the race and it was pretty much him and me going for the win. I think in the end I just hung it out a little more [than Haga] when the tyres started going off.
“It's great to get a win under my belt,†Spies concluded. “It takes a little pressure off. I feel pretty fortunate to come out of here in fourth after what happened in the first race. Now we go to Qatar and see if we can start chipping away at Nori's lead.â€
Way to comeback, hope that first race mishap doesn't come back to bite him if he's in the running for the title at the end of the season.
The US national anthem at WSBK. That's the first time I've heard it there. [thumbsup] Spies rocks!
Looks like Aprilia is going to be a contender! I'm so ;D about that. Max was doing some good riding Race 2.

If he did, the dude sure is consistant. ;D
he and haga both look great each time, but yeah, ben does keep getting him. =)
...man, can you believe we're talking about that? one of the other guys that just got off the factory yamaha never won a race on it. and that guy won the whole enchilada in 2005. flippin' amazing.

Different platform though, isn't it? I'd say a crossplane crankshaft qualifies it as a totally different bike ;D
Either way...the team, bike, and rider are all critical. And it's very impressive that Ben can win at a track he hadn't seen before.

yeah, but ben also tested the '08 and said it could've been a race winner... of course, he was specifically talking about the ama superbike series.
[roll]
It was the tyres.
Yes I know it's a control tyre.
;D
Yeah, Ben has the 'stones while everyone else was on those shitty Michelins. (sorry, feeling nostalgic for last year)
gm2, don't feel bad. I watched R2 three times and R1 twice. In my defense, the third time was cuz datv hadn't seen the races yet and offered me [drink] to hang out and watch racing.

Alright, we got a bet. Wooohooo! Who is in?
1) gm2
2) ducpainter
3) me (that's Spidey, ya ijit)
derby asked if zooom would wager but never committed.
We'll dig this thread up when it's time to pay up and someone (or group of someones) to eat humble pie.
where's that pie for me to be eatin?....I am payin $150 which was $50 each for gm2,ducpainter,and Spidey....I never realized Derby was lookin to get in on the action...right now though...I am going to be waiting for my next paycheck and I'll settle up because of the way business is now, that bet is going to eat all my dispoable funds for the month...so, it is a good thing I didn't include Derb, cause I wouldn't be able to afford a 4th!...but that is neither here or there...
cool...
but much more importantly: how about that shiz?! :D

Occasionally?
What's a boy to do? Route for Nitro Nori on the Ducati or homeboy Spies on the Yammy. It was a tough one in race 2.

OK...usually. ;D
I agree. I like Nori & Ducati...but I also want to see Spies do well. No matter who won I was happy! ;D
not to sure about Haga, what would have happened if Max N haddn't saved a highside on the last lap
3 turns from the finnish line,,,,, Max was right there at the line.
I want the best for them all.. makes for great racing.. keeps the drive alive.

Yup...
but that whole scenario is what racing is about...
and Nori came out on top.
Race 2
could have ended differently, but Spies rode a perfect, except for that little twitch when he flicked it left, race.
It's going to be a great season.
I'm sure Derby will post up the specifics... but I thought that all the bikes kinda favored certain tracks, and that as good as Nori and the duc are... at some tracks Max N and the gazuki will have an advantage, same for Ben and the Yami or Max B on the aprillia.

Yup. ;D
The other weird thing is that despite what everyone is saying about how much fast the gixxers are in a straight line, the fastest gixxer for the weekend was 316 mph (edit: I'm pretty sure I meant kph ;D) while both factory Ducs went 315 kph.

That probably depends on the length of the straight and the type of drive you get out of the last corner before that straight, huh? PI is known as a fast track, but I'm not sure whether it lets bikes stretch their legs as compared to other tracks.
Also, keep in mind that the straight at PI is downhill.

Max speed doesn't matter - a more important measure is average straight speed, or straight elapsed time. Just like drag racing, 2 cars can have identical max velocity, but if one got to that velocity faster, than it will have a lower time and win.
mitt
I know. But you'd think there'd still be a larger difference in max velocity considering how much the zuke walked away on the straights.

Dunno. On the Eurosport coverage the camera angles on the straights were mostly from ground level, and we caught the Haga and Neukirchner at an angle as they approached turn 1. It looked like Haga was braking super-late, but I was thinking that the camera angle may have contributed to that. It may have also made it seem like the Zuke was building a larger gap in the straights.

i think most of that is just the "slinky" effect.
The Zuke may have been getting off of the corner better, getting to 'top' speed earlier.
i guess you're all sorta talking about the last corner, but... it depends on the corner. generally the duc gets off the corner best. sure as hell looked like the new R1 does as well, too, in all but the last couple corners.

It may well have been. From what I've seen, the last turn is a long, left-hand sweeper that they build up speed through.
looked like Max with the Priller was getting off the corners really good...but he was wide on alot of them and I think that was due to the rear end chatter he said he was experiencing and therefore pushed him wider generally and knowing that, he took swoopier lines to compensate....but it still looked like he got that thing singing off the corners....if they get that chassis straightened out...he'll be pushing in the front group every race.
max wide in or out of a corner is just max. he constantly does that.

he was swoopier than normal....you could see it moreso especially in the laps before he got overtaken by Fabrizio when you were watching apex's and positioning in comparo to Ben and Nori...which I was watching the differences between those 2 as a matter of interest and caught the Max thing by happenstance...

We make a lot of assumptions here. Where it looked like the Susuki was getting away on the straight is exactly where Haga passed him 2 laps to go. ( I think it was 2 laps, maybe even last lap)
We don't know how strategy, humor, etc played a part here. It was clear in the end the Susuki had killed it's tires and Haga was there on his ass to nab the lead when it counted. Haga having chilled back saving his tires with no to little gap.
This may be the consequence of a delicate control rather than maximums at play.
Just a thought.
I still wanna see an IROC formated race.
at the end of the season... they race on whichever bike brand wins the points championship
