Spring is here with Summer not to far off and I hear the term squid more and more, hell I've used it myself. What actually defines a squid though? Is it just lack of gear or is it general disregard for personal/public safety? Would this term apply to any reckless behaviour on public roads as in wheelies, knee dragging, triple digit speeds??? I've seen alot of different riders, ride alot of different ways and to me this term could apply to all of them depending on the situation.
Interested to hear what the collective thinks...
I find that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squid_(motorcycle) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squid_(motorcycle)) has the best description I have found.
So they give common description but ultimately they define it as how a rider acts/rides. Interesting...
I also differ to wikipedia.
Just another word to throw out when you want to make yourself feel better about yourself.
As long as they aren't hurting others, they are fine with me.
Personally for me I would categorize it as anyone that brings undue negative attention to motorcycling in general. I admit that I sometimes exceed the speed limit, sometimes by a lot, but I don't do it in a place where anyone else is at risk ro even around for that matter. Squids only care about themselves, and of course how cool they think they look doing a wheelie down the freeway at 90mph in board shorts and a wife-beater with the Oakley MP3 shades, oh wait am I stereotyping here? Sorry, not really.
So a squid`s a stupid As#Hole [thumbsup]
My Definition:
Squid - Anyone who thinks they are hot s**t and invicible, who has no business riding a motorcycle. Typically has an affinity for Japanese sportbikes, wife-beaters, gym shorts, stand-up wheelies (not you, Pancake81 ;D ) , stoppies, chrome, stretched swingarms, multicolor ground-illumination lights, and a general disrespect for everyone on the road...
"Stupidly Quick, Underdressed, Ignorant and Dangerous"
Thats the first time I have seen that.
would riding it while in your swimtrunks and barefoot count, Cory? [thumbsup]
100+mph, wheelies, and general hooligan behaviour is the same not matter who you are or what you ride. There is inherent risk to yourself & others at all times unless you're on a closed course. You can choose to limit the risk but to say it's not there at all isn't accurate. Whenever I'm in a car with friends/family and we see a bike doing anything other than riding the speed limit the negative comments fly. I'm not saying it's right, it's just what I've experienced.
Now I'm not advocatng hotshot behaviour; I ride aggrssively from time to time but the wheelie scene is not my deal. Does that make us all squids in one way or another?

The squid definition is really easy, when you see another biker and you go "what a dip shit (or whatever derogatory adjective)" then that person is considered a squid. Wether it be gear or action.

Chaos, I'm assuming you ride like a squid, judging by your response. Its ok to put other people in danger so you can ride like a hooligan? And its ok to purposely insult other people who prefer to ride responsibly?

They didn't alter your post Chaos. Its a setting in everybody's profile. I saw all the profanity you used because I have the 'Leave words uncensored.' box checked.
The MODS did nothing. Its a setting.
Furthermore, no one is crying about how other people ride. Posters provided definitions.
Try making your point without calling people fags. You might get some respect.
ETA: Oh, he (or a mod, judging by the language he was using) deleted one of his posts.
Dude, lay off the caffeine; there's a great deal of drama you're trying to stir up [laugh].
My original post asked how everyone defined the term squid. I wasn't advocating any particular type of riding style just saying that aggressive riding is just that.
Relax, keep up the good fight and remember to "make the beast with two backs YOU"

I am not trying to stir any thing up here. I am just responding to the allegations from the others. You even have a term for it, "aggresive riding"! Really? I don't ride a couch, I ride a MONSTER, what other kind of riding is there? C'mon. wipe the sweat off that old vagina and get out and do some "aggressive riding" and maybe the testicles will drop and we can move on!!!
Whats with the vagina references?
Aggressive riding is what squids do. Its endangering to others. And they typically do it without gear. Thats their choice, but it gives us responsible riders a bad reputation.
Theres a time and place for everything. Wheelies, stoppies, aggressive riding, cutting people off, triple digit speeds, that can stay on the track.
ETA: Just because some of us (I would guess the majority on this board) ride responsible and save the crazy stuff for the track doesn't mean we're pussies. I think you're implying that we are because we don't act like squids on public roads.

No, I won't "shut the make the beast with two backs up". You're riding endangers the rest of us on the road.

Why can't we STFU about how someone else rides their bike? Because it affects our pocketbooks in the form of insurance rates and it also affects legislation and how laws are written and enforced.

So chaos just for the record, when the government steps in and regulates the displacement and horsepower of your motorcycle because you want to ride like an idiot on public roads, how is that going to work out for ya?
There is a time and place for everything and if you choose the inappropriate time and place then someone else will choose them for you. In case you have not noticed, there are a lot more people that drive cars than scooters so if you want to only ride on a track on an anemic little 125CC bike then by all means, CONTINUE TO BE A SQUID! If you really do not see that riding in that manner on a public road is not only dangerous but irresponsible then you are a lost cause.

No apologies, I thought this thread might get heated.
My point for asking was due to other comments I've read in other threads. It doesn't make sense to me how some riders get catagorized into the squid group and other don't. I was interested in finding out what the bias was, that's it.
Oh BTW I was told Squid=Squirely+Kid
I too belive it has everything to do with being a responsible and capable rider as well.
I AM A SQUID....
Wiki - Beginning motorcyclists commonly have trouble negotiating turns, and must slow down to unnecessarily slow speed, while at the same time have a tendency to ride very fast on the straight sections of the road.
I don't ride excessivly fast but at least the speed limit. I am still learning.
Biker Boys - My kids and i have watched it at least 5 times together. We love to play out the less than horrible acting.
I have a fender eliminator kit. I like it.
I use 87 octane gas as the website that most of us used to belong to said that was best.
I ride with a cheap helmet (GMAX). I like it!!!
No wheelies, stoppies, tailgating, unprotected rides, etc. But I am a squid!!!
Oh yeah...I was in the US NAVY for 9 years so I am actually proud to be a squid.
Every time I ever heard the term it was always regarding some unfortunate motorcycle accident victim, and now I see its really referring to a motorcyclist being a bit irresponsible (hands up all squids in class if any)! And I thought all along that it was actually comparing the physical character of a Squid to a traumatised human body after crashing a motorcycle.
Well you guys got me. By reading what is a squid I have determined that I must be one. I guess you're the last one to know.
The last super serious ticket I got, which I'm still waiting to go to federal court for, the several [leo] that took turns crewing me out all said that I was endangering people's lives. Real mad cause I was so old too. ;D That "playing the gray card" doesn't always work.
The only person I'm likely to injure/kill with my riding is me.
I usually don't speed in the flat lands, but that's what the mountains are made for.
LA
A squid is a tuner on a motorcycle. They are as equally deuschbaggy on 2 wheels as they are on 4.
Alright guys...
Quote from: chaos321 on May 15, 2008, 10:17:11 AM
I just won't point fingers and name call someone who rides the bike the way it was built to be ridden! If you want to break your bike in by babying it and then riding it like an old woman drives her car, that's fine. It's your bike! But let the rest of us enjoy our bikes the way we want. [bang]
See, the problem with this statement is that you have been insulting and rude and have been using foul language to people on this board who were just providing a definition to someone.
The bike is built for both street riding and track. Go to a track if you want to ride like a squid.
You don't seem to be acknowledging the effect you're having on everybody else. Your antics are giving the rest of us a bad name and increasing our insurance for no good reason other than you want to show off.
If you want to go fast, why not go to a track where you are not going to endanger everybody else.

That's kind of my point. I don't really judge anyone on how fast they ride or what they do what their bike... it's yours, do what you will (whether I agree or not). Unless you ride on the track only I'm sure there have been times when you could have been classified a squid. There are all sorts of levels of this but I get tired of hearing that term being thrown around. It's kind of a "those that live in a glass house..." type of thing.

Kroe, I guess my definition is a rider who rides around in shorts and a tshirt (their choice, thats not the deciding factor) and endangers others on the road. Thats the biggest point I'm trying to make. To me, anyone who rides like an asshole and endangers others and gives the rest of us a bad name by unnecessarily showing off are squids.
Again, only my opinion and OBVIOUSLY some people disagree. But, I'll state this again, the deciding factor for me is the willful endangerment of others.

WOW agian too stupid to read my posts. I'm not raising any insurance premiums for any one. In fact, I carry year round full coverage on all my bikes and the most expensive one costs me $13 a month.
The only person I endanger when I ride is ME! You definately sound like you need to step away from the dangers of 2 wheels and surround yourself with a cage! Jeez, the women riders on here have more balls than this! You ride your bike and I'll ride mine. That's all I'm trying to say, stay out of my business and mind your own!
I am staying out of your business Chaos. I'm simply saying, as well as T-Byrd and others that have posted in this thread (go attack them too while you're at it), that squids that ride dangerously affect the rest of us. YES, they do make the beast with two backs up the insurance of those of us that ride responsibly. Insurance companies see riders being irresponsible and raise our rates.
Oh, and I am a female rider. Call me stupid again. Go right ahead. Your inability to form a decent argument for your view is quite amusing. Your insults only result in less respect for you.
And, please, like you said, go ride your bike and leave those of us who are having a meaningful conversation without insulting others alone.

Maybe it's your fault your insurance is so high instead of blaming all the squids for doing it. I live in the state that the Starboys are from. Why isn't the insurance sky high here.
This board is fun. Everybody is already fired up over the change at the REAL Monster forums, so it doesn't take much to get you riled up. WhooHoo, bring it on!!!!

I'm not riled up, I'm making a real argument against your position while you stoop to insults. Why would it be my fault that my insurance is so high? I have no traffic record at all. I certainly have done nothing to make my insurance go up.
The language and insults used in this thread should stop now. Either discuss/argue in an appropriate manner or don't do it at all. chaos, any of three posts here could be considered enough for some time away from the forum, please tone it down and lay off the personal insults.

Sorry for all the BS. in this thread.
Sorry this thread turned into such a mess. That kid was a total troll. Curiosity had me check the other board and sure enough there he was touting his accomplishment.
You have to wonder about the personality and mentality of a person like that.
Do they act like that in everyday life, or just anonomously on the interweb?
What makes a person act out like that?, sorry my psych classes intrigued me in college. :)
There's this guy on the east coast that was video taped from a chopper doing 130 plus on a freeway... weaving in and out of traffic... ends up getting cut off by a chick... she notices him at the last minute and jerks back... flipping her SUV. Nobody was expecting him to close in that quickly. The news... and the DA... start talking about banning high displacement bikes from public roads. (Never gonna happen)
My point... a squid (IMO) is somebody who rides aggressively where it is not safe to do so. Hell, I take them back roads faster than I should... but there... it is my ass sliding off the road and into the tree.... when the number of variables go up.. other cars... oncoming traffic... driveways... all that other crap... I do tend to slow down a bit.
Monsters are meant to be enjoyed... they are meant to be ridden. Anybody can go over 100 down the freeway. To me... that isn't even fun... corners are where it is at.
If you make motorcycling look bad to others motorcyclists... well... there is a word for that somewhere. [thumbsup]

The more I read this thread the more I feel like a squid :'( Anyone with an S4RS that can honestly say they don't enjoy the occasional power wheely is lying to themselves (I don't mean 110 mph stand up wheelies on a crowded highway with no gear).
There should be a Squid-Scale from 1-10 with 10 being the squidiest.
I would be like a 2 or 3 :-[
I don't think any of us are completely unguilty of some degree of squidlyness. I think it's more a matter weighting the consequences. Knowing when it is relatively safe and when it's inappropriate. We all enjoy a certain level of performance in our bikes or we'd have all bought a Hyosung 250. Stand up wheelies and doing 120 in tragffic is dumb and potential deadly.

AFAIK, squid started out as a Navy term for a "squirrely young kid", who would spend his money on a motorcycle, ride foolishly, and eventually hurt or kill himself and morphed over time into "Stupid, Quick, Underdressed, Imminently Dead".
To me, squid is a very grey area and probably has more to do with attitude than actions.

Okay Hitler, I hope I wasn't too offensive, or too abrasive. or too vulgar, or too threatening????
I don't think anyone here is trying to 'enforce' the way people ride. This is a group of people that mostly agree on a particular style and approach to riding, or at least what they *think* is not safe and careless.
Besides, the definition of a squid isn't unique to this board, you know that.
If you want to get banned, do a better job at it. I can think of waaay better ways of pissing people off [roll] Your kung fu is weak sauce. You can...<oh, maybe I should yell this too> YOU CANNOT TAKE THE PEBBLE FROM THE HAND.
If you are truly offended at a community not reveling in the squid's approach to riding, this probably won't be a good hang out for you.

SQUID: SOMEONE WHO SPENDS $12,000 PLUS ON A HOOLIGAN BIKE CALLED A MONSTER, ONLY TO RIDE IT AROUND AT 55MPH BECAUSE ANYTHING FASTER WOULD JUST BE DOWN RIGHT ILLEGAL. FOR SHAME!!!
JUST SO YOU KNOW.... CHRISTIAN PHEIFER STUNTS A MONSTER, WITH A LITTLE BACKING FROM DUCATI. THEY MUST BE PART OF THIS CONSPIRACY OF SQUIDS. Edit: I think he jumped ship to BMW, and they are giving him money too!!
AS FAR AS ME ONLY HAVING INTERNET KUNG FU, I OFFERED TO GIVE MY ADDRESS TO ANYONE WHO WANTED TO STOP BY TO PLAY ON MY TOYS. BUT I GUARANTEE YOU, YOU WONT COCK OFF TO ME UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL!
AS FAR AS DUCATISTI BEING MORE MATURE(BULL$HIT), YOU ONLY HAVE MORE MONEY. NOT MORE COMMON SENSE OR SKILL! THERE ISN'T ENOUGH PEOPLE RIDING BIKES YET FOR YOU PEOPLE TO BE MAKING FUN OF OR POINTING FINGERS AT, OR CALLING NAMES JUST BECAUSE YOU RIDE A MORE EXPENSIVE BIKE. NOT MORE POWERFUL, JUST MORE EXPENSIVE. NOT FASTER, JUST MORE EXPENSIVE.
I'M NOT SOME KID WHO STUNTS MY SCOOTERS. I DO HAVE A CRF50 THAT I STUNT UP AND DOWN MY STREET, BUT THAT'S IT. I ENJOY EVERYTHING ABOUT MOTORCYCLES, EXCEPT THIS $HIT. YOUR NOT BETTER THAN ME, OR ANYONE ELSE THAT DOESN'T RIDE... WELL.....SLOW, SAFE,? SO I TAKE OFFENSE TO ANY ONE WHO ACTS LIKE THAT. YES, I KNOW THAT IT IS STUPID OR DANGEROUS TO RIDE IN SHORTS AND FLIPFLOPS AND DO WHEELIES DOWN THE STREET. BUT IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. "WE" ALL PAY THE "POLICE" TO MAKE IT THEIR BUSINESS. LET THEM ENFORCE THE LAWS. IF YOU WANT TO DO IT GET A BADGE! WE ARE TOO SMALL OF A GROUP(MOTORCYCLISTS) TO BE BASHING EVERYONE ELSE FOR HOW THEY RIDE. I PERSONALLY REFER EVERYONE I KNOW TO TAKE THE MSF COURSES. HAS EVERYONE ON HERE? NO! I HAVE NUMEROUS TIMES AND ALSO INSTRUCTED WHILE IN THE AIR FORCE. SO WHY CAN'T WE ALL GET OUT AND RIDE, STOP BASHING AND WAVE TO EVERYONE ON A BIKE AND STOP TRYING TO BE SO ELITE BECAUSE YOU RIDE YOUR MONSTER RESPONSIBLY. I love it that we have a board member immortalized in this entry:
Quote
A "squidly" rider eschews all or most of the protective gear worn by many riders (helmet, gloves, leather jacket, riding pants, and boots) and the social and legal norms of riding behaviour, and as such is looked upon with derision by experienced motorcyclists, who also refer to them as "organ donors", "Zip-Splats", "a Stillie", "Skin Crayons", CycleWorld, March 1995.</ref> and "soon-to-be-ex-motorcyclists".
Stillie is the one formerly with the infamous upside down GSX-R.

I had to go squid yesterday in order to get the bike back. Had a tire put on and it was suppose to be ready Friday and they give me a call Saturday to say it is ready an hour before they close and since I was about 40 minutes away I just went in what I was wearing, shorts polo and gym shoes. Had some shades to protect my face. Anyways it was uneventful and what not.
Ironically the guy calling every one else a vag, is being the biggest vag. You don't like how people feel about your behaviors? make the beast with two backs off and go some where else.
Personally I'll ride the shit out of the bike on empty roads but as soon as cars are around its time to take it easy.
The squid rides the shit out of it around people putting them in danger with bad passes and dumb tricks to where if they fall instead of just being a smear they become someone's hood ornament; and I, for one, am not a fan of unsolicited decorations to my vehicle.

Ok, back on topic, was coming back from a great ride today on the new scooter, heading south on I-95 cruising a nice sedate 80 keeping with the flow of traffic and a guy on a Yamaha, don't know what kind it went by to fast, riding 2 up with his girl on the back, both of them in shorts and t-shirts and no helmet. They were easily going over a 100 weaving through traffic. Now that is a bona fide SQUID.

The difference is usually when the person got in over their head they had gear on that did its best from keeping them in traction. I am not going to say there are some people that don't act elitist because there are those that do but at the same time, some of the shit people do and wear on a motorcycle is just make the beast with two backsing stupid.
If mocking someone for doing something stupid is elitist well, damn...
I mean if someone wants to go climbing without a rope, you better be damn good at a climbing, and I am going to guess that Mr. T shirt and sandals isn't a motorcyclist equivalent in skill to a ropeless rock climber. So yes, that dickhole flying down the highway in shades and a t shirt bobbing and weaving through traffic is going to get pointed at and laughed at. Just as you would laugh at someone going in to a professional football game without pads.

Suffice it to say, the kid screaming by you (w/o adequate sightlines to pass safely) with a girlfriend on the pillion wearing hotpants and flipflops...
..is a SQUID.
'Course this 'tard would argue that he's not hurting you. OTOH, when his juvenile behavior puts him down w/ grilfriend sliding on the pavement behind him, I doubt girlfriends parents would agree with him.
I know the ER nurses who have to debride his roadrash (& girlfriend's) wouldn't agree with him. I can promise you the MD conducting his (& girlfriend's) skin grafts wouldn't agree with him. I doubt the insurance co paying for those skingrafts agrees with him. I'm pretty sure that you and I (paying higher motorcycle and health insurance premiums because of this idjit's stunts and consequences) agree with him either.
Guess squid ends up being short for motorcycle mounted moron.
One problem w/ riding like an immature kid, is that you don't ever get to realize it unless you manage to stay alive long enough to grow up.

I heard that is exactly where the term originates from. Its basically Emergency Medical Technician talk for a body that has been basically separated into two halves. The entrails/intestines then hang out of the upper portion of the body...like a squid.

I was thinking about this a few days ago, and realized that, in college, i was a

I used to ride plenty fast on the highway as I'm sure many others do. I stopped quite some time ago. Too many outside variables can lead to similar scenarios.
Absolutely tragic incident.. but if I'm reading this correctly the victim had one friend die in a similar fashion a week before, and another friend die in another speed related wreck the following week!?
I'm just one old curmudgeon who's been lucky enough to live through a bunch of risky behavior in earlier years.. but even in those situations I realized that whatever consequences I might face were of my own doing.
'Fraid personal responsibility has gone out the window these days. Statements like this one from the snopes article don't help the situation or address the real issue.. "We've got to do something to save these kids, We've got to do something to support them.."
WE can't do a single thing in the world to save "these kids" from themselves. Nobody can change "these kids" behavior but the kids themselves.

IMO, statements like Snopes' only boost efforts to legislate performance motorcycles off the road. We lose additional rights and freedoms every year, "for the children's sake".
Have to bite my tongue now, any more and I'm gonna get political...
THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!! Personal responsibility long gone these days.
Anybody remember the squid that went through a taco bell? That was 10X worse.

The sad truth is that some of this is still natural selection at work. People don't like to think about it but Darwinism is still shaping us, kids that set things on fire with sparking barbie doll roller-skates don't make it to breed.
Sometimes the ladies at work fuss at the way I ride on the interstate in the morning. I might be considered a bit squidly. According to them, I follow too closely and weave in and out of traffic. All this is true from their perspective. They don't see that I can stop quicker and make safe passes and lane changes with less room than they can in a car. And I do try to consistently use my turn signals.
I enjoy the interstate in the morning as long as I don't get caught up in traffic. It can be quite fun and challenging. Definitely not a time to hit autopilot and zone out. Be on your game or get squashed.

I think that before "fast bikes" get banned on the street there should be a law that only riders with a certain amount of experience should be aloud to get super bikes; specially liter bikes. That would decrease the death rate substantially in my opinion. How many times have you talked to a young kid with a liter bike only to find out its his first bike. How can he have the proper amount of respect for that bike? I had a 250 ninja for a long time before I got a bigger bike...Here is some food for thought.

>:( Oh that's fantastic!!! HEY CHAOS ARE YOU STILL LURKING!?!?! This is why we look down on squid, it has nothing to down with elitism or I'm better than you because I wear gear. It's because it draws the wrong kind of attention to our sport!!! >:(

The one thing that I can't stand about the statistic the lady quoted about sportbike riders having death rates 4 times higher than any other class is that it ignores age. There is a huge age difference between sportbike riders and cruiser riders, touring riders, and any other class they want to put to them. Then when you normalize for age by looking at age-related statistics for car deaths, it's not nearly as much of a shocker.

Squid.. tough to define, but like the supreme court said about porn.. "I know it when I see it".
Too many squids don't live that long.

Didn't get a shot of this squid before...

..but here's a photo of the squid after.
:-[
Wow, you can see the blood on the rear tire, frame (by the foot pegs) and rear tire of the truck. Sobering picture.
"but here's a picture of the squid after" ....
I give him a 9.0 for sticking the landing. [thumbsup]
This might be the definitive squid video.

Hummm...? Did any of you see a Duc in that video? Squids must LOVE the rice bikes.
I like my bike to much to treat it like that.

Holycrap. Even I have to admit. There's some major Squidlyness in that video.
Squishy Idiot ???
My father-in-law had a saying:
^^ THOSE BOYS ARE ATE UP WITH THE DUMBASS!! ^^
(http://jj.am/gallery/d/44032-1/Motorcycle_hits_carback.gif)
more squidlyness
Where I'm from, a squid had nothing to do with what you were wearing. I first heard the phrase 'that kid is a squid' at a dirtbike track when a rider took up 105% of the track (went off and came back on a couple of times), and it meant he was 'all over the place' and a 'novice rider thinking he had advanced skills'.
My definition has always been 'rides like an idiot', not looks like an idiot. I bet a ton of you guys look like idiots to somebody (I know I certainly do too).
The videos of people trying to stoppie/endo or wheelie and crashing sum it up pretty good, but I also include anybody who crawls around a turn, then nails the throttle on the straights. - 30mph indicated curve, and they are going 30 (I want to be going 50 or more so I get to lean wwaaaaayy over) and then on the straight away they hit a hundy or more....
If you can go that fast in the straights, maybe time to practice the curves?
QuoteI like my bike to much to treat it like that.
